Rotativa uses wkhtmltopdf to render a page, so the delay can come from your MVC view, the renderer process, CSS and other resources it must fetch, or the HTTP path returning the finished file. Time those stages separately before changing settings; otherwise, it is easy to hide a broken asset or change the PDF’s content without fixing the bottleneck.
Where Rotativa PDF time goes
Rotativa is an integration layer, not a separate PDF rendering engine. The Rotativa.AspNetCore project describes converting Razor views to PDFs with wkhtmltopdf, and says the executable must be accessible to the application process: Rotativa.AspNetCore project. The same broad pipeline applies when diagnosing MVC applications that use Rotativa: application code prepares the view, the renderer loads the HTML and its resources, wkhtmltopdf produces the file, and the web server or gateway delivers it.
A delay in one stage can resemble a delay in another. For example, a slow or unreachable stylesheet can leave wkhtmltopdf waiting and may also produce a document without its expected styling. A slow conversion process can instead be blocked by a long-running script, constrained host, or hung process. A gateway timeout tells you that the HTTP request did not complete in time; by itself, it does not identify the root cause.
Reports of two-to-three-minute downloads and approximately five-minute waits with missing CSS appear in individual community posts, not controlled tests or general performance measurements. Treat them as examples of symptoms, not expected Rotativa timings: Stack Overflow report and Rotativa issue tracker.

Measure the full request before tuning
Record timings in the production environment, including the identity and machine that run the conversion. Use one correlation ID for the request and its renderer invocation so that application and process logs can be compared.
- Time view preparation and HTML rendering. Record the start and end of model preparation and the point at which the HTML intended for conversion is ready. If this stage is already slow, wkhtmltopdf settings will not fix it.
- Time resource loading and conversion. Where practical, log requests for CSS, images, fonts, scripts, and other dependencies, then time the wkhtmltopdf process from start to exit. Note the process exit code and capture standard error.
- Time delivery separately. Record when the generated file is ready and when the response finishes. Include output size, request duration, and concurrency: a large PDF or many simultaneous conversions can affect the HTTP path even if an isolated conversion is quick.
- Compare like with like. Repeat with representative documents, the same production binary and process identity, and realistic concurrency. There is no universal latency threshold in the cited project material; compare against your own baseline and service requirements.
Check the generated HTML and its dependencies
Start with the actual HTML sent to the converter, not only the page as it looks in a developer’s browser. A PDF-specific layout can avoid loading scripts or styles that do not contribute to the document. One community response reports improvement after removing unnecessary JavaScript and CSS from a PDF layout; that is an anecdotal lead to verify against your own templates, not a guaranteed fix: reported Rotativa latency discussion.
Make a minimal PDF layout comparison
- Render one representative view with its normal layout and then with a pared-down PDF layout.
- Keep only the CSS, images, fonts, and scripts required for the intended output. Remove an asset only after confirming it is not needed for document content or layout.
- Compare the resulting appearance as well as elapsed time. A faster but incomplete or unstyled document is not a successful optimization.
Verify that production can reach every resource
Check the converter’s view of every referenced URL. Production may differ from a developer workstation in DNS, outbound network access, TLS configuration, authentication, base URLs, file permissions, or the identity that runs the application. If CSS is missing while inline styling remains, linked-resource resolution is one plausible cause to investigate; a historical issue describes that symptom, but does not establish a universal explanation: Rotativa issue reports.
For local resources, verify the paths and the worker’s read permissions. For remote resources, test reachability from the production host and under the same process identity. Do not assume that a URL reachable from your laptop is reachable from the application server.
Run wkhtmltopdf outside the web request
When possible, reproduce the conversion on the production host using the same HTML, binary, assets, command-line switches, and operating-system identity. This separates renderer behavior from MVC request handling and gateway limits.

For each reproduction, retain the renderer version, operating-system version, command and switches, elapsed time, exit status, standard error, and whether the process exits cleanly. Also note whether it uses local files or remote resources. The wkhtmltopdf project’s issue guidance asks for version, operating system, and a detailed reproducer when reporting problems: wkhtmltopdf issue tracker.
If the command-line conversion is fast but the HTTP request is slow, investigate application work, output transfer, and the web server or gateway path. If the conversion itself is slow, focus on resources, renderer settings, host capacity, and process health. If the process remains after the request or never exits, treat that as a process-lifecycle problem rather than ordinary slow rendering.
Use wkhtmltopdf settings selectively
The wkhtmltopdf settings reference documents controls for JavaScript, post-load delay, slow scripts, image loading, local-file access, and load-error behavior: wkhtmltopdf usage and settings reference. These controls can affect both latency and output correctness. Change one at a time, measure again, and inspect the PDF.
- JavaScript: If the PDF does not depend on client-side rendering, test whether JavaScript can be disabled. If it does depend on scripts, disabling them can omit content or change layout.
- Delay after page load: A configured delay can give late-rendering content time to appear, but it also adds waiting time. Reduce it only after checking that the required content is ready earlier.
- Slow scripts and load errors: Error-handling behavior can determine whether the conversion continues when a resource or script fails. Ignoring an error may shorten a wait but can silently produce an incomplete PDF; first find out what failed.
- Images and local-file access: Disabling image loading or changing local-file access can alter output or prevent dependencies from loading. Apply such settings only when the document’s resource requirements and security model support them.
Do not copy a setting just because it helped another deployment. A production PDF that is faster because required CSS, images, or scripted content disappeared is a regression, not an optimization.
Distinguish renderer hangs from gateway timeouts
A historical shared-hosting report describes a 504 during PDF generation, and another report describes a process hanging under IIS. Neither report establishes a universal cause: Rotativa issue reports. Compare the direct conversion duration with the full request duration and inspect application, IIS, reverse-proxy, and hosting limits. A gateway may stop waiting while the renderer is still working; alternatively, the renderer may have stalled before the gateway deadline.

- If the renderer exits successfully but the request still times out, inspect response delivery and the HTTP timeout configuration.
- If the renderer is still running after the request fails, collect process and error logs and determine whether the application cleans up the child process.
- If the renderer exits with an error, retain standard error and verify resource access, permissions, binary compatibility, and the exact input used.
A larger timeout can be a temporary reliability measure when the conversion is legitimately long, but it does not reduce rendering time or address a stuck process. Do not treat raising limits as the performance fix without identifying the slow stage.
Confirm the deployed binary and assess renderer suitability
Rotativa.AspNetCore requires wkhtmltopdf to be accessible to the application process, so confirm the deployed executable, its architecture and version, and its permissions instead of assuming production matches a development machine: Rotativa.AspNetCore project. The official wkhtmltopdf downloads page lists version 0.12.6 as the stable series and gives its release date as June 11, 2020; because that page may not reflect a later release state, verify the current binary and platform support rather than treating it as proof of the latest version today: wkhtmltopdf downloads.
The project status page notes that the Qt 4 base used by wkhtmltopdf has not been supported since 2015 and that its WebKit has not been updated since 2012: wkhtmltopdf status. That age is relevant when evaluating compatibility, security, and long-term suitability, but it does not by itself show that an upgrade or replacement will make a given PDF faster.
The wkhtmltopdf project explicitly warns: “Do not use wkhtmltopdf with any untrusted HTML.” Its AppArmor guidance describes confinement, and notes SELinux as the corresponding security system on Red Hat systems: wkhtmltopdf downloads and warning and AppArmor guidance. If your workload includes user-supplied HTML or resource URLs, review the renderer’s security boundaries and access to local and network resources before optimizing throughput.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When to evaluate another conversion route
If measurements point to renderer constraints, deployment friction, compatibility, or security requirements that your current setup cannot meet, compare alternatives with representative templates rather than assuming a different tool will be faster. Evaluate fidelity for existing Razor, CSS, and JavaScript; cold and warm latency under realistic concurrency; runtime and deployment dependencies; control of local and network resource access; observability and failure recovery; and cost and data-handling terms.

If your goal is to capture a clean website screenshot rather than convert an MVC Razor view into a PDF, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request takes a URL and returns an image or PDF. For example, using cURL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options and response details. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will disabling JavaScript always speed up a Rotativa PDF?
No. It may help when scripts are unnecessary, but it can remove or alter content when a template depends on client-side rendering. Test the output as well as the elapsed time.
Does a 504 prove wkhtmltopdf is the slow part?
No. Compare renderer process time with the complete HTTP request and inspect the gateway and application logs to identify which part stopped completing.
Is wkhtmltopdf 0.12.6 definitely the latest version?
The official downloads page lists 0.12.6 as the stable series with a June 11, 2020 release date. Check the project’s current downloads and platform information before making a present-day version decision.
