What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The safest way to speed up a slow Windows 10 or Windows 11 laptop is to work through built-in checks in order: install pending Windows updates, scan for malware, inspect storage, reduce unnecessary startup and background activity, identify resource-heavy processes, then adjust power, visual effects and drive optimization if needed. Several causes can exist at the same time, and Microsoft cautions that older hardware may not improve significantly.
This approach costs nothing beyond your time and keeps changes reversible. Work through the checks while the laptop is doing the task that feels slow, and make one change at a time so you can tell what helped. Menu names can differ slightly between Windows 10, Windows 11 and individual updates.

Why a Windows laptop becomes slow
A laptop can feel slow because its storage is nearly full, too many applications launch at sign-in, background processes consume resources, Windows or a driver is out of date, malware is present, one task is using unusual CPU, memory or disk capacity, or the hardware is no longer adequate for current workloads. These causes can overlap, so one setting is unlikely to fix every machine.

Do not delete files, disable software or end processes until you know what the item is and whether you need it. Windows 10 and Windows 11 use similar tools, but wording and locations can vary by version and update.

Before troubleshooting, save open work and note when the slowdown occurs: immediately after sign-in, only in a browser, during file transfers, or whenever the laptop is unplugged. That context helps you compare the result after each step. A laptop that is slow only during one demanding activity may have a workload problem rather than a general Windows problem.
Use this low-risk sequence first
- Check Windows Update and run a Windows Security Quick scan.
- Inspect storage usage before removing anything.
- Use Storage Sense, Cleanup recommendations or Disk Cleanup selectively.
- Disable only startup apps that you do not need at sign-in.
- Use Task Manager to find recognized apps consuming excessive CPU, memory or disk.
- Close unneeded browser tabs and restart the laptop.
- Consider visual-effects and power-mode trade-offs.
- Run Windows’ built-in drive optimization tool.
Microsoft’s general checklist is available in Tips to improve PC performance in Windows. Complete the first checks before changing performance settings: they are easier to undo and can reveal the cause.
1. Install updates and check for malware
Check Windows Update
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates, install available updates and restart when Windows asks.
Microsoft says updates often contain fixes and performance improvements. Optional driver updates can sometimes help, but do not install every optional driver indiscriminately; consider the device and component compatibility first. If a laptop is stable and a driver is unrelated to the symptom, there is no reason to treat every optional item as mandatory.
Allow an update to finish before judging performance. Windows may use processor, memory and disk resources while downloading, installing or indexing files, so a temporary slowdown during maintenance is not necessarily a permanent fault. Restarting when prompted also completes changes that cannot be applied while Windows is running.
Run a Quick scan
- Open Windows Security.
- Choose Virus & threat protection.
- Select Quick scan and allow it to finish.
A scan is a diagnostic step, not a promise that malware is the cause. Follow Windows Security’s instructions if it identifies a threat, then restart and check whether the original slowdown remains. Do not install a separate “PC cleaner” or security booster just because a scan takes time; first use the protection already included with Windows.
Important Windows 10 lifecycle context
Microsoft’s surfaced performance guidance states that support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance or security fixes for Windows 10. A Windows 10 laptop may still run, but check Microsoft’s current lifecycle and upgrade guidance before relying on it for supported security maintenance.
2. Check free space before deleting anything
See what is using the drive
- Open Settings.
- Go to System > Storage.
- Review the categories and identify which ones occupy the most space.
Do not assume that every large category is disposable. Personal documents, photos, videos, music, application data and work files may be irreplaceable. Make sure important files are backed up before removing or moving them.
Use the category view as a map, not as an instruction to erase the largest item. A large application may be needed, and a large personal folder may be your only copy of important work. If the laptop is shared, confirm which account or person’s files a cleanup choice affects.

Choose a cleanup method
| Built-in tool | What it helps you review | Control you retain | Use it when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Storage Sense | Temporary files and, depending on your settings, items such as Recycle Bin contents. | Review its settings and categories before enabling automatic cleanup. | You want Windows to manage routine temporary-file cleanup. |
| Cleanup recommendations | Categories Windows identifies as possible cleanup candidates. | Inspect each recommendation and select only items you understand. | You want a guided review in Storage settings. |
| Disk Cleanup | Windows cleanup categories presented in its own dialog. | Tick categories yourself rather than accepting every selection blindly. | You prefer the traditional Windows cleanup interface. |
Storage Sense, Cleanup recommendations and Disk Cleanup can identify different categories depending on the Windows version and the files on your laptop. Use the method that gives you enough detail to make a safe decision. Microsoft’s instructions are in Free up drive space in Windows and Storage settings in Windows.
Compare the tools by control as well as convenience. Storage Sense is useful for recurring temporary-file maintenance, while Cleanup recommendations and Disk Cleanup make it easier to inspect categories before selecting them. None is a reason to delete personal files without a backup, and none guarantees a measurable speed increase if storage was not the limiting factor.
Understand the Windows.old warning
After an upgrade, Windows may retain a previous installation in a folder named Windows.old. Removing it can recover space, but it also removes the option to return to the earlier Windows version. Delete it only after you are certain the current installation works and you will not need that rollback option.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Move large personal files when space is the problem
Microsoft suggests moving large personal files such as photos, videos, music or documents to external storage. This is a space-management step, not proof that an external drive directly speeds up every laptop. A portable external SSD is one possible destination; check that its connector matches your laptop’s available ports and keep another backup of important data. Moving a file without preserving a backup merely exchanges a storage problem for a data-loss risk.
External storage comes with practical trade-offs: capacity, port compatibility and the need to keep the drive available when you want those files. Treat it as a place to store or archive data, not as a guaranteed performance upgrade. If you move files, open a few from the new location and confirm the backup before deleting the originals.
3. Reduce unnecessary startup and background activity
Review Startup apps in Task Manager
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps. On some Windows versions this may be labelled Startup.
- For each entry, decide whether you actually need it to launch when you sign in.
- Select an unnecessary, recognized app and choose Disable. Leave essential security, hardware and accessibility utilities enabled unless you understand their function.
Startup programs can slow sign-in and continue using resources after the desktop appears. Disabling an item does not uninstall it; you can return to the same list and enable it again if a feature stops working. If you do not recognize an entry, look at its publisher and installed location or leave it enabled until you can identify it. Do not disable random system components simply because they appear in the list.
The right question is not “Which entries can I turn off?” but “Which of these do I need at sign-in?” A cloud-sync tool may be necessary for work, while a launcher you use only occasionally can usually wait until you open it. Keep security, touchpad, display, audio and accessibility utilities enabled unless you know exactly what disabling them changes.
Limit background activity selectively
Some Windows versions expose background permissions in an app’s Settings page. Turn off background activity only for apps that do not need to refresh, synchronize or send notifications while you are not using them. Keep background access for apps whose live updates or synchronization you rely on. Labels and available controls vary between Windows 10, Windows 11 and individual applications.

After changing startup or background settings, sign out or restart and test the same task again. If a notification, synchronization job or hardware feature stops working, restore the relevant setting rather than disabling additional components at random.
4. Find the process that is actually consuming resources
Read Task Manager’s Processes view
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
- In Processes, examine CPU, memory and disk columns.
- Allow the list to settle for a moment, then look for an application you recognize that is using an unusually large share of one resource.
- Save your work, close that application normally and check whether responsiveness returns.
High CPU can indicate an active calculation or stuck application; high memory can accompany too many open programs or browser tabs; high disk activity can occur during updates, file indexing or intensive file work. The numbers change constantly, so use them to identify what is happening now rather than treating one reading as a permanent diagnosis.
Take more than one look. A process that is busy briefly may be installing an update or saving a file, whereas a recognized application that remains at the top while you are doing nothing deserves closer attention. Close the application through its own menu when possible so it can save state cleanly.
Use the Performance view for context
Task Manager’s Performance view shows activity for the processor, memory, disks and other components. Compare the resource that feels constrained with what you are doing. If one known program is responsible, close it or reduce its workload. Close browser tabs you no longer need and restart Windows if the machine remains sluggish after applications have been closed.
For example, if disk activity rises while Windows Update is running, wait for the operation rather than repeatedly ending system tasks. If memory rises as more browser tabs and applications open, close the ones you are not using before changing power settings. These observations help distinguish a temporary workload from a persistent limitation.
Do not end unfamiliar system processes
Ending a process you do not recognize can close a Windows component, interrupt an update or cause data loss. If a process name is unfamiliar, leave it alone while you identify it. Only close an application you recognize and are not using, and save documents first.
5. Trade responsiveness for battery life carefully
Power mode
Search Settings for Power mode and choose Best performance where that option is available. The exact path and labels differ between Windows 10 and Windows 11. Microsoft warns that this mode uses more power, drains a laptop battery faster and can make the device warmer. Use it when the laptop is plugged in or when responsiveness matters more than runtime; use a balanced or battery-focused mode when portability matters.
Recommended Free Tools
| Choice | Likely priority | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Best performance | Higher responsiveness when the system needs it. | More power use, shorter battery life and potentially more heat. |
| Balanced or lower-power mode | Battery runtime and lower heat. | May provide less peak responsiveness during demanding work. |
Windows does not guarantee a measured speed increase from changing the mode. Judge the result by the tasks that felt slow and switch back if the heat or battery cost is not worthwhile. A setting that helps while plugged in may be a poor everyday choice for travel.

Reduce visual effects if the interface itself feels heavy
- Search Start for Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows.
- Open the matching Control Panel dialog.
- On the Visual Effects tab, choose Adjust for best performance, or turn off only effects you do not value.
- Apply the change and use the laptop normally.
Visual effects use system resources, but this setting changes the appearance of Windows. Menus, animations and other interface details may look less polished. If the difference is distracting and the laptop is otherwise responsive, restore the previous choice.
6. Run Windows’ built-in drive optimization tool
- Search Start for Defragment and Optimize Drives.
- Open the tool and select the drive you want to examine.
- Choose Optimize and let Windows complete the operation.
Use the Windows tool rather than installing a third-party defragmenter. The operation is not a guaranteed speed boost for every device, so treat it as one maintenance step after checking updates, storage and active processes. Avoid interrupting it while the laptop is busy with other disk-intensive work.
Run the built-in tool only on the drive you intend to maintain and let Windows choose the appropriate operation. Do not stack several optimization utilities or assume that repeating the operation will solve a CPU, memory or malware problem.

What to do when the laptop is still slow
Restart after updates, malware remediation, major cleanup or a long period of heavy use. Then repeat the Task Manager check while performing the task that normally causes the slowdown. If the same known application consistently consumes resources, investigate that application’s own settings or workload rather than repeatedly ending unrelated Windows processes.
If storage remains nearly full after safe cleanup, move appropriate personal files to a backed-up external destination or remove files you no longer need. Do not remove system folders merely because they are large. If Windows becomes slow only during a particular task, note which resource rises in Task Manager and adjust that task—for example, close unused tabs or applications before starting it.
If none of these built-in measures changes the experience, the limitation may be the laptop’s age or hardware. Microsoft says older PCs with outdated hardware may not see significant improvements from these steps and that upgrading the device may be the best long-term solution. That is not a universal recommendation to buy a particular component: an internal SSD or memory upgrade requires the exact laptop model, compatible specifications, physical access and a safe backup plan.
Do not budget for an upgrade until you have identified the limiting component. A storage shortage, startup overload or unwanted background process may cost nothing to correct. A hardware change can cost money and may affect warranty coverage, so verify the model’s specifications and backup requirements first.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsKeep maintenance simple
- Install Windows updates when offered and restart when required.
- Review Storage settings before the system reaches a space warning.
- Keep only necessary programs in Startup apps.
- When the laptop slows, check Task Manager before installing a “booster” utility.
- Keep important personal files backed up before cleanup or hardware work.
- Recheck power mode after unplugging the laptop so performance settings do not consume battery unexpectedly.
These steps use Windows’ own Settings, Windows Security and Task Manager. They can remove avoidable work and identify the immediate cause, but they cannot make outdated hardware perform like a newer laptop.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I speed up a Windows laptop without installing software?
Yes. Windows includes Update, Windows Security, Storage, Task Manager, visual-effects controls, power modes and drive optimization. These tools can identify or reduce avoidable work, but Microsoft does not guarantee a measurable gain for every laptop.
Which apps should I disable at startup?
Disable only applications you recognize and do not need to launch when you sign in. Keep security, hardware, accessibility and synchronization tools enabled unless you understand their role. Disabling an app does not uninstall it, and you can enable it again in Task Manager.
Is it safe to delete Windows.old?
Deleting Windows.old can free space, but it removes the option to return to the earlier Windows installation. Keep it until you are satisfied that the current Windows version works and you will not need that rollback option.
Should I choose Best performance power mode all the time?
Not necessarily. Best performance may improve responsiveness when needed, but it uses more power, reduces battery life and can make the laptop warmer. Use it when plugged in or when responsiveness matters more than runtime; switch to a balanced mode for portability.
Will moving files to an external SSD make my laptop faster?
Moving large photos, videos, music or documents can relieve a storage shortage, but an external SSD is not a guaranteed speed fix. Check port compatibility, keep important files backed up and treat the drive primarily as a storage destination.
What if the laptop is still slow after these steps?
Check Task Manager again during the task that causes the slowdown. If no built-in change helps, the laptop may have outdated hardware. Microsoft says older PCs may not improve significantly; any SSD or memory upgrade requires exact model and compatibility checks.
The Bottom Line
Start with Windows Update, a Windows Security Quick scan, Storage review and Task Manager. Clean up selectively, disable only unnecessary startup activity, and treat power, visual-effects and hardware changes as trade-offs rather than guaranteed speed boosts.
