How to Speed Up a Slow Phone So You Can Keep It Longer

Before buying a replacement, restart your phone, install pending system and app updates, and check storage. Those reversible steps fix many slowdowns. If the problem remains, isolate a bad app, separate internet slowness from phone slowness, check temperature and battery health, and only then consider a reset, battery service, or replacement.

Start with the fixes that are quick and reversible

A phone can feel slow because it is busy, nearly full, running a misbehaving app, too hot or cold, or waiting on a poor connection. Begin with changes that do not erase data or alter your setup.

1. Restart the phone

A restart clears temporary processes and gives the operating system a clean start. On most Android phones, hold the power button for about 30 seconds or until the restart option appears; the exact button combination varies by manufacturer. On an iPhone, use the model-specific power and volume-button sequence, then slide to power off and turn it back on. If the phone is frozen, use the manufacturer’s force-restart sequence rather than repeatedly tapping an unresponsive screen.

2. Install operating-system and app updates

On Android, open Settings > System > Software update (the wording can differ by manufacturer). For apps, open the Play Store, tap your profile picture, choose Manage apps & device, and install available updates. On an iPhone or iPad, open Settings > General > Software Update; update apps from the App Store’s account page.

  • This compatible replacement battery is what you need to bring that dead smartphone back to life.

Updates can fix crashes, compatibility problems, and security defects, but an update is not a promise that an older phone will become faster. Install it when the phone has enough charge and storage, and allow time for indexing or background work afterward.

3. Check how much storage is free

Storage is not the same as memory (RAM), but a nearly full drive leaves the operating system and apps less room for temporary files. Google says Android phones may start having problems when less than 10% of storage is free. Apple advises keeping at least 1 GB free on an iPhone or iPad. These are platform-specific guidelines, not a universal percentage for every device.

On Android, open Settings > Storage and review the categories consuming space. Remove downloads you no longer need, large offline videos, duplicate photos, and apps you have not used. Empty a trash or recently deleted folder if your file or photo app keeps one. Do not delete a file merely because its name is unfamiliar; verify what it is first.

On iPhone or iPad, open Settings > General > iPhone Storage (or iPad Storage). The screen lists recommendations and apps by size. Offload App removes the app itself while preserving its documents and data, so you can reinstall it later. Delete App removes the app and its associated data. Choose based on whether you may need that local data.

Find out whether an app is the culprit

Do not treat every slow phone as a reason to close every app. The useful question is whether one app causes the slowdown, drains the battery, crashes, or makes the phone hot.

Android: use Safe Mode as a controlled test

Android Safe Mode temporarily disables downloaded apps while leaving core system software available. The entry method differs by manufacturer, but it commonly involves opening the power menu, touching and holding Power off, and confirming Safe Mode. Check your manufacturer’s instructions if that gesture does not work.

  1. Restart into Safe Mode and use the phone for long enough to reproduce the slowdown.
  2. If the phone becomes responsive, a downloaded app is a likely cause; Safe Mode itself is not a permanent repair.
  3. Restart normally.
  4. Remove recently installed or recently updated apps one at a time, checking the phone after each removal.
  5. Reinstall only an app you can verify is necessary and trustworthy. If the slowdown remains in Safe Mode, look at storage, temperature, battery condition, system software, or hardware instead.

Testing one change at a time matters. Removing several apps together may hide which one caused the problem, while clearing every app’s data can create a separate loss-of-settings problem.

iPhone and iPad: stop only apps that are actually stuck

Use the app switcher to close an app when it is unresponsive or clearly misbehaving, then reopen it. Apple’s support guidance states: “Force closing apps unnecessarily can slow down your device.” Reopening a closed app requires loading its data again, so routinely swiping away every app is not a performance strategy.

If one app repeatedly freezes, update it, check its own settings for downloaded content, and contact its developer if the behavior continues. Deleting and reinstalling an app can remove local data, so confirm that its content is synchronized or backed up first.

Separate phone performance from connection problems

If web pages, streaming, maps, messages, or cloud-synced content are slow while menus and offline apps respond normally, the bottleneck may be the network. Apple notes that congestion, movement between cell towers, and weak mobile data can make connected apps feel slow even when the phone itself is functioning normally.

Turning airplane mode on and off can re-establish a connection, but it will not fix congestion or a coverage gap. Avoid concluding that the processor is slow from a single delayed webpage.

Check power-saving modes and temperature

Power-saving modes trade speed or features for battery life

On iPhone and iPad, Low Power Mode reduces power use and can disable features or make some activities work more slowly. Check Settings > Battery when assessing full responsiveness. On Android, Battery Saver can limit background activity and delay some visual effects, connectivity, features, or apps. It is useful when you need extra runtime, but turn it off temporarily if you are trying to judge normal performance.

Android’s battery guidance also recommends lowering brightness, shortening screen timeout, and restricting apps with unusually high battery use. These changes can extend runtime; they do not add processing power. Battery behavior and menu names vary by device, so use the phone manufacturer’s instructions for model-specific controls.

Move a hot or cold phone to a moderate temperature

Phones can run less responsively when they are too hot or too cold. Heat can occur during gaming, navigation, video recording, fast charging, direct sunlight, or use inside a hot car. Cold can temporarily reduce usable battery time and cause shutdowns. Stop demanding tasks, remove insulating cases if appropriate, disconnect the charger, and let the phone return gradually to a moderate temperature. Do not put it in a freezer or apply an external heat source.

Temperature warnings are a reason to change the environment, not to install a “cooling” app. If the phone repeatedly overheats during ordinary use, inspect charging accessories and battery condition and seek manufacturer or qualified-service advice.

Can an aging battery make a phone slower?

Yes, in some circumstances. Lithium-ion batteries chemically age: maximum capacity falls, and the battery may deliver less peak power. Battery impedance and available voltage affect how much power the phone’s system can draw. That is a diagnosis to verify, not proof that every older phone is being throttled.

Check battery health on an iPhone

Open Settings > Battery > Battery Health (or Battery Health & Charging, depending on the software version). Read Maximum Capacity and the Peak Performance Capability message. A service warning or a message describing performance management indicates that battery service may be relevant. Apple says, “If you are impacted by this and would like to improve your device performance, replacing your device battery can help.”

Apple describes design expectations under ideal conditions, not a universal replacement rule: iPhone 14 and earlier models are designed to retain 80% of original capacity at 500 complete charge cycles, while iPhone 15 models are designed for 80% at 1,000 complete charge cycles. Actual capacity depends on use and charging. These figures do not establish a threshold for Android phones or prove that replacement is worthwhile in every case.

Assess Android battery behavior without assuming a percentage

Android settings differ by manufacturer. Look in Settings > Battery for battery usage by app, adaptive-battery controls, a battery-health screen, or a service message. A sudden shutdown under load, unusually rapid drain, or a phone that becomes hot while idle is more informative than age alone. If the manufacturer provides a diagnostic, follow it; otherwise, have a qualified service provider evaluate the battery.

Battery replacement can restore runtime and, when an aged battery is limiting peak power, improve responsiveness. It cannot repair a failing storage chip, unsupported software, a defective display, or a network problem. Ask for the exact model and a written service description before authorizing work.

Use charging habits that do not accelerate wear

Heat, remaining fully charged for long periods, and frequent deep depletion can accelerate lithium-ion aging. Xiaomi’s guidance, for its own devices, emphasizes avoiding prolonged heat and extended time at full charge and suggests a 40–80% range in some situations. Those numbers are manufacturer-specific suggestions, not requirements for every phone. Follow your phone maker’s model-specific battery guidance instead of applying a universal charge rule.

Use a compatible charger and cable, keep ventilation clear, and avoid heavy gaming or recording while charging if the phone becomes hot. A charging habit that keeps the phone cooler is generally more useful than chasing an exact percentage.

When a factory reset is justified

A factory reset can remove persistent software conflicts after you have tried updates, storage cleanup, and app isolation. It is not a routine speed boost and it does not repair aging hardware. The reset removes apps and their associated data, so treat it as a last resort.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Back up photos, contacts, messages, authenticator data, documents, and app-specific content.
  2. Verify the backup by checking it from another device or the service’s web interface where possible.
  3. Confirm that you know the phone’s account credentials and any screen-lock code; theft-protection features may require them after reset.
  4. Record important settings, eSIM details, and two-factor recovery methods.
  5. Use the reset command in the phone’s system settings, then set up the device without immediately restoring every app.
  6. Test basic responsiveness before reinstalling apps in batches. If the phone is still slow when nearly empty and freshly reset, software clutter is unlikely to be the cause.

Repair, keep using, or replace: a practical decision

Do not decide from age alone. First classify the symptom, then compare the remedy with your needs.

What you observe Most useful next check Likely action
Menus and apps lag, storage is nearly full Free-space reading and large-file review Remove or offload data, then retest
Slowdown began after an app install Android Safe Mode or app-specific troubleshooting Remove or reinstall the suspect app
Only online features lag Wi-Fi, another location, and offline comparison Address network or carrier conditions
Phone is hot or power-saving mode is active Temperature and Battery settings Cool the device and reassess with normal power settings
Unexpected shutdowns, service warning, or severe battery drain Battery-health screen or professional diagnostic Consider battery service if the phone otherwise meets your needs
Still slow after a verified reset Hardware and software-support assessment Compare repair availability and performance needs with replacement cost

Before replacing the handset, check whether it still receives the software and security support you need, whether a battery or other service is available locally, and whether its performance meets your actual tasks. Current repair prices and phone prices vary by model, country, and provider; there is no single break-even figure that applies to everyone.

A 15-minute troubleshooting sequence

  1. Note whether all tasks are slow or only one app or online service.
  2. Restart the phone.
  3. Install pending system and app updates.
  4. Check free storage and reach the platform’s recommended headroom.
  5. Disable a power-saving mode temporarily and let the phone return to a moderate temperature.
  6. Test Wi-Fi and an offline task.
  7. On Android, use Safe Mode if downloaded apps remain suspect; on iPhone, avoid force-closing apps unless one is stuck.
  8. Review battery health and usage.
  9. Back up before any factory reset or repair.

This sequence cannot turn every aging phone into a new one. It can, however, distinguish a fixable condition from a limit of the hardware and help you spend money on the part that actually needs attention.
