The safest first step is to open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Login Items & Extensions. Remove only items you recognize and do not need at login, then review Background App Activity separately. Restart and observe the result. These controls can reduce unnecessary work during login, but they cannot explain every kind of Mac slowdown.
Open at Login controls what launches automatically when you sign in. Background App Activity controls whether an app may perform work while it is not open, such as checking for updates or syncing data. Treat them as separate decisions, test changes one at a time, and restore a permission if an app stops doing something you rely on.

What startup settings can—and cannot—fix
Startup cleanup is most relevant when the delay occurs while the Mac is signing in, when the desktop takes a long time to become usable, or when several applications appear immediately after login. It is also useful when the problem began after installing or updating an application that added itself to the login list.
A Mac that remains sluggish long after the desktop is ready may have a different cause. Apple identifies several possibilities: insufficient free space on the startup disk, an application that needs more memory than is readily available, an application incompatible with the Mac, unused applications left open, or disk problems. Startup management is therefore a controlled diagnostic, not a promise of a particular speed increase.

Understand the two controls in Login Items & Extensions
| Setting | What it controls | What changing it can affect |
|---|---|---|
| Open at Login | Apps, documents, folders, and connections that open automatically when you sign in. | The applications and windows present immediately after login. Removing an entry does not necessarily uninstall the app. |
| Background App Activity | Whether an app may perform tasks while it is not open. | Automatic updates, syncing, notifications, indexing, or other background functions provided by that app. Turning it off can stop work you expect. |
An application can be absent from Open at Login and still be allowed to run background tasks. Conversely, an application can open at login without needing broad background permission. Review each list according to the function you need, rather than treating every entry as the same kind of startup load.
Before you change anything
Describe the symptom
Write down what feels slow and when it happens. Useful distinctions include:
- The Mac takes a long time to reach a usable desktop after entering your password.
- The desktop appears, but several applications open and the Mac remains busy for a while.
- An application is slow even when no login items are launching.
- The slowdown began after installing or updating a particular application.
- Applications or windows reappear after a restart even though you did not expect them to.
This observation determines whether you should start with login items, background permissions, reopen-window settings, or a broader system diagnosis.

Record the current state
Take a screenshot or write down the names in Open at Login and Background App Activity before removing anything. Include whether each item is an app, document, folder, or connection. A record lets you undo a change and supports a controlled remove-and-reintroduce test if the result is unclear.

Remove unnecessary Open at Login items
- Choose Apple menu > System Settings.
- Select General in the sidebar, then choose Login Items & Extensions.
- Review the Open at Login list. Identify entries you recognize and do not need to launch automatically.
- Select an unwanted entry and use the remove control. Do not remove an item merely because its name is unfamiliar; investigate its purpose or leave it in place until you know what it does.
- Restart the Mac and note whether the original symptom changes.
Removing an item changes the login behavior, not the application itself. You can still open the application manually when needed. Keep items that provide a function you require immediately after signing in, such as a workflow you deliberately start every day, and avoid removing system components simply to shorten the list.
What to remove first
Start with optional utilities, launchers, or applications you rarely use at login. If you are unsure about an entry, leave it enabled during the first pass and test the entries you understand. The goal is to isolate a cause without creating a second problem, such as a missing sync client or a required connection that no longer starts.
Review Background App Activity separately
- Remain in System Settings > General > Login Items & Extensions.
- Scroll to Background App Activity.
- For each application, ask whether you need it to check for software updates, synchronize data, deliver notifications, or perform another task while it is closed.
- Turn background permission off only for applications whose background function you do not need.
- Use the Mac normally. If expected syncing, updating, or another service stops, return to this screen and restore permission for that app.
Apple describes this permission as allowing an app to perform tasks while the app is not open, including checking for updates or syncing data. Disabling it can therefore reduce work, but it can also make information stale or delay an update until you open the app yourself.
Do not confuse quitting with disabling background work
Some applications continue running after you quit their visible window. Apple warns that an app continuing in the background might slow Mac performance. The practical response is to identify the application and decide whether its background function is necessary, not to disable every background permission indiscriminately. If the app provides a service you depend on, restore its permission and investigate that app’s own settings or support guidance.

Use a controlled restart test
If the Mac still has a startup problem, use Apple’s isolation method rather than changing many settings at once.
- Record the complete login-item list and the original symptom.
- Remove the login items you are testing, while leaving entries you cannot identify or do not want to risk changing.
- Restart and check the same symptom under similar conditions. Note the time to a usable desktop qualitatively, which applications open, and whether the delay remains.
- If the problem improves, add the removed items back one at a time.
- Restart after each addition and observe whether the problem returns.
- If the symptom returns, remove the last item added and investigate that application before re-enabling it.
This procedure identifies an item associated with the symptom; it does not prove that the item is defective in every situation. A change in network state, an application update, available storage, or another condition can also affect a restart. Keep your notes so you can reproduce the comparison.
Stop unwanted windows and applications from reopening
A Mac can appear to ignore login-item changes because macOS is restoring the previous session. When you log out or restart, look for the Reopen windows when logging back in option and clear it if you do not want the previous applications and windows restored.
On macOS Ventura or later, also check System Settings > Desktop & Dock > Close windows when quitting an application. This setting affects whether an application’s windows remain available to be restored after you quit it. Check the application’s own preferences as well, because some apps have a separate launch or session-restore option.

If an application reopens even though it is not in the visible Open at Login list, Apple says it may have installed other software that causes the behavior. In that case, review the application’s settings and its installed components rather than repeatedly removing the visible entry.

| The startup disk is nearly full or macOS warns about storage. | Storage settings. | Inspect what is consuming space and remove or move files you no longer need. Files can be moved to another disk or external storage when appropriate; an external drive does not itself speed up startup processes. |
| One demanding app becomes slow, especially alongside other open apps. | Memory pressure and the app’s requirements in Activity Monitor. | Quit unused applications, then check whether the demanding app needs more memory than is readily available. Save work before quitting. |
| The issue began after an app or macOS change. | Application compatibility. | Check whether the app supports your Mac and current macOS version. Quit or update an incompatible app rather than leaving it open at login. |
| Many applications remain open during normal use. | Unused open apps. | Quit applications you are not using. Closing a window is not always the same as quitting the application. |
| Errors, freezes, or unusual disk behavior continue. | Disk health. | Use Disk Utility’s available checks and follow its repair guidance. Back up important data before attempting repairs. |
Check storage before deleting useful data
Open the Mac’s Storage settings and identify the category consuming space. Remove expendable downloads, installers, or duplicated files only after confirming that you do not need them. If a large personal library must remain available but does not fit comfortably on the startup disk, moving it to another disk or external storage addresses the space constraint; it is not a replacement for diagnosing login items.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Use Activity Monitor to find ongoing work
Activity Monitor can show which applications are consuming resources while the Mac feels slow. Look for an application that remains active after you quit its window or that demands more memory than the system can readily provide. Quit only processes you recognize and can safely stop. For an application that immediately relaunches, examine its login and background permissions and its own settings instead of repeatedly forcing it to quit.
Best Value
Check compatibility and open applications
An app that worked on an older macOS release may not behave correctly after an update, and an app that requires more memory can make the entire system feel slow when several programs are open. Quit unused applications, verify compatibility with your Mac and macOS version, and update or replace an incompatible application according to its developer’s guidance.
Investigate disk problems
Persistent errors, freezes, or file-related failures warrant a Disk Utility check. Disk problems are independent of the login-item list, so a clean startup test does not rule them out. Protect important files with a current backup before making repairs.
A decision path for common cases
The login itself is slow
- Record the Open at Login list.
- Remove recognizable, unnecessary entries.
- Check the reopen-windows option.
- Restart and compare the same login sequence.
- If improved, reintroduce items one at a time to identify the associated entry.
The desktop is ready, but the Mac stays busy
- Review Background App Activity rather than removing every login item.
- Use Activity Monitor to identify applications continuing to work.
- Disable background permission only for apps whose updates or syncing you can postpone.
- Restore permission if expected behavior breaks.
- Check storage and memory if the busy state persists.
An app reopens unexpectedly
- Clear Reopen windows when logging back in during the next logout or restart.
- On Ventura or later, review System Settings > Desktop & Dock > Close windows when quitting an application.
- Check the app’s own launch or session-restore preferences.
- If it still returns and is absent from Open at Login, investigate software the app may have installed.
Nothing changes after startup cleanup
Do not keep deleting login entries at random. Check free storage, memory demands, app compatibility, unused open applications, and disk health in that order or according to the symptom. A startup-item change that produces no difference is useful evidence that the slowdown may lie elsewhere.

Version-specific behavior to know
Apple’s current instructions use System Settings, the interface introduced in newer macOS releases. Directions for reopened windows differ between macOS Ventura or later and earlier releases, so use the labels present on your Mac rather than trying to follow a path from a different version.
Apple’s September 29, 2026 guidance says that starting with macOS 27 Golden Gate, macOS shows a notification the first time an app continues running after it is quit and displays an indication on the Dock icon. Those indicators are version-specific; Macs on earlier systems may not show them. Their absence does not prove that no background process is running.
How to keep the result stable
- Keep a short record of intentional login items and the functions they provide.
- After installing an application, check whether it added itself to Open at Login or requested background activity.
- When disabling a background permission, note which feature may stop working so you can restore it quickly.
- Repeat the controlled one-at-a-time test after a major application or macOS update if the same startup symptom returns.
- Maintain free startup-disk space and quit applications you are not using; these address common causes that startup-item cleanup cannot fix.
The useful outcome is not the shortest possible login list. It is a startup configuration in which required sync, update, and notification functions remain available while unnecessary launches and background work are removed, with a clear record of what changed.
