Start by identifying what is slow: Fire TV menus and app launches, one particular app, or video playback. Restarting the stick, clearing the affected app’s cache, and checking for software updates are sensible first steps. Buffering is more likely to call for network troubleshooting than a general performance fix.
First, identify the kind of slowdown
Different symptoms point to different fixes. If the home screen and menus lag, focus first on restarting, software updates, storage, and power. If only one app is slow or unstable, troubleshoot that app. If menus work normally but video buffers, check the Wi-Fi connection instead.

Try the no-purchase fixes first
1. Restart the Fire TV Stick
A restart is a simple first step for general sluggishness or an app that has stopped responding. If the screen is frozen, Amazon says you can hold Select and Play/Pause together for about five seconds, or disconnect power for about a minute. Button behavior can vary by device. If one app is the problem, clear its cache before taking a more disruptive step. On many Fire TV versions, open Settings > Applications > Manage Installed Applications, select the app, then choose Clear Cache. Amazon’s page also describes an option to clear all application caches; labels may differ by software version and device. Follow Amazon’s Fire TV cache and app-data instructions.

3. Use Clear Data only if cache clearing is not enough
Clear Data is separate from Clear Cache. It can reset an app’s local data or settings, and you may need to sign in again. Try it only if the issue continues and you are prepared to set the app up again.
4. Check for a Fire TV software update
Amazon includes checking for a Fire TV software update among its steps for apps that crash or will not load. Look for the update option in Settings; the exact menu path and wording can vary between Fire OS versions. See Amazon’s app troubleshooting guidance.

If storage is low, review installed apps
Uninstall apps you no longer use, or check whether your device offers Auto Offload. Amazon says Auto Offload can free storage by offloading infrequently used apps while retaining their login information and settings for when they are downloaded again. It is unavailable on some older models, including Fire TV Stick 1st and 2nd Generation and Fire TV Stick Basic Edition. Freeing storage may help with storage-related constraints, but it is not a guaranteed cure for every kind of lag. See Amazon’s Auto Offload information.

If video buffers, troubleshoot the network
Buffering during playback does not by itself show that the stick’s menus or processor are slow. Use Fire TV’s Network Status tool to inspect the connection, then try restarting the Fire TV device and network equipment or improving the router’s placement relative to the stick. If Wi-Fi remains unreliable, Ethernet is another option for network-related problems. Some Fire TV devices require an Ethernet adapter, and compatibility depends on the exact model and generation. Verify compatibility before buying one; a wired connection is not a general fix for slow menus or app launches.
Check power when the stick freezes or restarts
If the device freezes, restarts unexpectedly, or displays a notice that it needs more power, check that the cable and power connections are secure and use the supplied cable and adapter. Amazon recommends the included power equipment in its power and frozen-screen guidance. This is a targeted check for power symptoms, not a reason to buy replacement accessories routinely.

Reserve a factory reset for persistent problems
If the steps that match your symptoms have not helped, a factory reset is a last resort rather than a routine speed-up measure. A reset can require you to go through device setup and sign in to apps again. Before proceeding, make sure you know the account details you will need and are willing to reconfigure the stick.
