Vanilla Terraria’s dedicated server does not document an item-spawn or item-give command. To create items server-side, run TShock (or another server tool that provides equivalent commands), authenticate an administrator, and grant the appropriate permission. In TShock, use /item (or /i) to spawn an item for yourself and /give to give one to another player.
Playing with friends? Godlike.Host runs hosted Terraria servers from 10 data-center locations, with free DDoS protection.
The command alone is not enough: the server software, permission node, item name, quantity, banned-item policy and delivery configuration all determine whether the request succeeds and where the item appears.

First identify which Terraria server you are running
“How do I spawn an item?” has two different answers depending on the server software. Terraria’s vanilla dedicated-server command reference includes administrative commands such as ban, password, version, time, port, maxplayers, say and motd. It does not document a command that creates an item or transfers one to a player.
That means a command such as /item will not become available merely because you have operator access to a vanilla server. You need a separately installed server tool, such as TShock, that implements item commands and permission checks. If your server console shows only the standard administrative command set, treat it as vanilla until you confirm otherwise.

Vanilla server: what you can and cannot do
- Vanilla’s documented dedicated-server commands manage the server and players; they do not include an item-spawn command.
- There is no documented vanilla equivalent of TShock’s
/item,/ior/give. - Installing or using TShock changes the command and permission model; it is not a syntax trick that can be enabled from the vanilla console.
TShock or another server tool
When TShock is running, its command set and permission system handle item creation. The user issuing a command must be authenticated, and the relevant permission must be granted to that user or to a group they belong to. A server that has TShock installed but has not authenticated you, or has not assigned the permission, can still reject a correctly typed command.
Prepare TShock and permissions
Before trying to spawn anything, install or run TShock for the world you intend to administer. Use the server’s normal authentication process to sign in as an administrator, then verify that the account or group has the item permission it needs. TShock separates self-spawning, giving items to other players and access to banned items.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| Action | Required permission | What it controls |
|---|---|---|
Spawn an item for yourself with /item or /i |
tshock.item.spawn |
Allows the user or group to run the self-spawn command. |
Give an item to another player with /give |
tshock.item.give |
Allows the user or group to target another player. |
| Use an item classified as banned | tshock.item.usebanned |
Controls access to banned-item entries; it is separate from the ordinary spawn and give permissions. |
Do not assume that permission to spawn for yourself automatically includes permission to give to someone else. Assign tshock.item.spawn and tshock.item.give independently, according to the role you want the user or group to have. If a command works for one administrator but not another, compare their groups and these exact nodes first.
Minimum setup checklist
- Confirm that the process hosting the world is TShock rather than an unmodified vanilla dedicated server.
- Authenticate the account that will issue the command.
- Grant
tshock.item.spawnfor self-spawning,tshock.item.givefor giving to another player, or both. - Decide whether the account should also have
tshock.item.usebanned; grant it only when access to banned items is intentional. - Keep the server’s permission changes consistent with your normal administrator and group-management procedure.
Spawn an item for yourself with /item or /i
Use this form when the authorized user should receive the item:
/item <item name> [quantity]
TShock also accepts the shorter alias:
/i <item name> [quantity]
The item name is required. Quantity is optional. When you leave quantity out, TShock uses the item’s maximum stack size. That default is item-specific, so omitting the number does not mean “one.” If you need a precise amount, include the quantity explicitly.

Examples
/item torch 20requests 20 torches for the authenticated user./i torch 20performs the same request using the alias./i "dirt wall"uses the full multi-word name and lets TShock apply the item’s maximum stack because no quantity is supplied./item "dirt wall" 50requests an explicit quantity for a multi-word item name.
The examples illustrate the syntax; the command succeeds only if the account has tshock.item.spawn, the item resolves unambiguously and the item is permitted under the server’s banned-item rules.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Give an item to another player with /give
Use /give when the recipient is a different player:
/give <item name> <player name> [quantity]
Both the item name and player name are required. Quantity remains optional and defaults to the item’s maximum stack size when omitted.
Examples
/give torch Alex 20requests 20 torches for the player named Alex./give "dirt wall" Alex 50quotes the item name, identifies the recipient and requests 50 units./give torch Alexleaves quantity out, so TShock uses the maximum stack size for that item.
The issuer needs tshock.item.give. Having only tshock.item.spawn does not establish permission to target another player. If the recipient’s name is ambiguous or cannot be resolved, correct the player name before changing the item syntax.
Use item names correctly
TShock resolves item input by name. A partial name can work, but only when it narrows to exactly one item. A short fragment that matches several items is not a reliable identifier; use the complete display name or a more specific phrase instead.

Quote names containing spaces
Put a multi-word item name in quotation marks, as in /i "dirt wall". Without quotes, the command parser can treat each word as a separate argument, which prevents the intended item from being selected or shifts later arguments into the wrong positions.
When a name does not resolve
- Replace an overly broad partial name with the item’s complete display name.
- Put the complete multi-word name inside quotes.
- Check spelling and punctuation against an item reference.
- If several entries still appear to match, choose a name that identifies one item only.
Do not infer that a failed name lookup means the item is banned. Name resolution, permission checks and banned-item checks are separate failure points.
Use numeric IDs as a lookup aid
The official Terraria item-ID table lists each item’s numeric ID, display name and internal name used by the game code. It is useful when a display name is unclear, when several names look similar or when you are documenting an item for staff. The table is a reference, not a replacement for the server software and permission setup.
An ID by itself does not add an item on a vanilla server, bypass TShock permissions or override the banned-item policy. First confirm that your server tool accepts the identifier format you plan to use; if it does not, use the exact item name that TShock recognizes.

| Configuration | Result of /give |
Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
SSC enabled and GiveItemsDirectly enabled |
TShock attempts to insert the item directly into the recipient’s inventory. | The documentation describes this direct-insertion behavior as experimental and warns that it may not work correctly or may cause item loss. |
| SSC not enabled | The given item spawns as a dropped item rather than being inserted directly into inventory. | The recipient must collect the drop in the world. |
Therefore, a successful command does not always mean that the recipient will immediately see a new inventory slot. Check the world near the player when direct insertion is not active. If direct insertion is enabled, remember that the experimental warning makes backups and cautious testing important before relying on it for valuable items.
Why this matters for self-spawning
The same server configuration affects how you interpret the result of an item operation. A command can be accepted while the item appears as a world drop instead of being silently placed in inventory. Confirm the delivery mode before concluding that a successful response failed.

Troubleshoot a command that does not work
“Unknown command” or no item command at all
Recheck the server software. Vanilla’s documented command list does not include item spawning. If the server is vanilla, install or run a compatible server tool such as TShock and repeat the authentication and permission setup. Typing /item into a vanilla console will not create the command.
“You do not have permission”
Check the exact node required by the operation:
- Self-spawn:
tshock.item.spawn. - Give to another player:
tshock.item.give. - Banned-item access:
tshock.item.usebanned, in addition to the applicable spawn or give permission.
Verify that the account is authenticated and that the permission was assigned to the account’s effective group. Granting one of these nodes does not automatically grant the others.
The item name is rejected or selects the wrong item
Use the complete display name, quote names containing spaces and avoid a partial name that matches multiple entries. Consult the official item-ID table to distinguish similar entries, then provide the identifier format supported by your server tool or use the unambiguous item name.
Best Value
The command runs but the item is not in inventory
Check the delivery configuration. With SSC disabled, TShock gives items as dropped objects in the world. With SSC enabled and direct insertion configured, the item may be inserted into inventory, but the feature is experimental and can fail or lose items. Look for a nearby drop before retrying, and avoid repeatedly issuing the command while you are unsure whether the first request succeeded.

Ordinary item permissions do not necessarily authorize banned entries. Confirm that the server’s policy permits the item and, where appropriate, grant tshock.item.usebanned to the controlled administrator group. Do not grant that permission broadly unless bypassing the banned-item policy is part of the server’s rules.
A give command targets nobody
Check the player argument separately from the item argument. Use the recipient’s resolvable player name, keep the item name quoted when it contains spaces and include an explicit quantity while testing. Once the command works, you can omit quantity to use the item’s maximum stack.
A safer operating procedure for administrators
Item commands can alter progression and inventories, so use a repeatable sequence rather than improvising on a live world.
- Identify whether the server is vanilla or TShock.
- Authenticate with the administrator account that will perform the operation.
- Confirm the precise permission node for the intended action.
- Resolve the item to one unambiguous name; quote it if it contains spaces.
- Start with an explicit, modest quantity instead of relying on the maximum-stack default.
- For another player, verify the recipient name before submitting
/give. - Observe whether the result is an inventory insertion or a world drop under the current SSC and
GiveItemsDirectlysettings. - Check that the item arrived before issuing another request.
- Record unusual grants, especially banned items or grants made while direct insertion is enabled.
This sequence separates software, authorization, parsing and delivery problems. It also reduces accidental duplication and makes it easier to diagnose a failed request without repeating it blindly.

Quick command reference
| Goal | Command | Permission | Quantity if omitted |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spawn for yourself | /item <item name> [quantity] |
tshock.item.spawn |
Maximum stack size |
| Spawn for yourself using the alias | /i <item name> [quantity] |
tshock.item.spawn |
Maximum stack size |
| Give to another player | /give <item name> <player name> [quantity] |
tshock.item.give |
Maximum stack size |
For every row, item names with spaces must be quoted. A numeric item ID is a reference identifier only; it does not remove the need for TShock, authentication or the appropriate permission.
