How to Solve the Water Temple in Ocarina of Time Without Getting Lost

The Water Temple becomes manageable when you treat its central chamber as a hub and the water level as a route selector. The three Triforce marks set the water to its lowest, middle, or highest level. Each time you change the level, return to the central chamber and recheck doors, holes, platforms, and passages that were previously underwater or out of reach.

The most commonly missed item is the small key beneath the floating central platform at middle water. The most important progression item is the Longshot, obtained after the Dark Link fight. Once you have it, use it to reach the remaining keys and Boss Key, then restore the water level needed for the north-side route to Morpha.

Before you start: the route logic

Bring the Hookshot, Iron Boots, Zelda’s Lullaby, bombs, arrows, and a sword. Din’s Fire can replace arrows for some torch puzzles, but it is optional. The Iron Boots let Link sink; removing them lets him rise. The Hookshot activates targets, hits enemies, and becomes the Longshot later.

There are three water settings:

Setting What it generally opens What to remember
Lowest Lower passages, the first torch room, the block route, and early keys Use the central opening and Iron Boots to move between underwater passages.
Middle The hole beneath the raised central platform, the compass route, and the west-side path to the final water control The hidden small key is under the platform, not in a conventional room entrance.
Highest Upper passages, moving platforms, the Dark Link room, and Longshot progression High water is not the final setting for every return trip; lower it again when a side passage requires it.

Keep a simple note each time you change the level: write “lowest,” “middle,” or “highest,” then list which locked doors and unexplored openings are visible from the central chamber. This prevents you from repeatedly searching rooms whose entrances are currently impossible to use.

The Nintendo 64 original and the Nintendo 3DS remake use the same broad dungeon structure, but a few actions differ enough to change the next step. Nintendo producer Eiji Aonuma described the remake’s main usability improvement this way: “Link can put on and take off his Iron Boots in a flash!”

Detail Nintendo 64 Nintendo 3DS
Iron Boots Equip them through the equipment menu, which interrupts movement. Equip and remove them quickly through the remake’s streamlined controls.
Finding water controls Door markings are less explicit, so the Triforce symbols and room layout do more of the guiding. Visual markings around some doors make routes to water-level controls easier to identify.
Some crystal-switch puzzles In one commonly described room, the switch is behind the gate. In the corresponding 3DS arrangement, the switch is in front of the gate.
Central-platform clue The opening under the rising platform is easy to overlook. The camera presentation makes that opening clearer, but you still must sink into it.

If a switch seems to be in the “wrong” place compared with these instructions, identify the edition before trying a different route. The dungeon is not completely redesigned; the differences are concentrated in controls, visual guidance, and a few interactions.

Enter the temple, find Ruto, and collect the map

Reach Princess Ruto

  1. Enter the temple and remove the Iron Boots to rise to the ledge near the entrance.
  2. Put the Iron Boots back on to descend through the water.
  3. Follow the route between the unlit torches. Princess Ruto is below; approach her and follow her upward when she moves.

Use the Hookshot on enemies or targets when a direct approach is unsafe. The goal here is not to clear every room; it is to locate Ruto and establish the entrance route you will use repeatedly.

Get the map

After Ruto’s sequence, enter the nearby room and open the chest containing the map. From this point, the map is most useful when combined with the water setting: an unvisited room drawn on the map may still be inaccessible until its entrance is above water or a platform has risen.

Set the water to its lowest level

Use the first Triforce mark

  1. Return to the room containing the Triforce mark.
  2. Stand on the mark and play Zelda’s Lullaby.
  3. Wait for the water to drain completely.

After the change, treat the central chamber as your checkpoint. Do not immediately commit to the first open doorway; scan the floor, the central tower, and the newly exposed lower passages.

Open the first torch door

  1. Drop through the opening in the central floor.
  2. Find the one lit torch and the two unlit torches.
  3. Shoot an arrow through the flame to light the unlit torches, or use Din’s Fire.
  4. Enter the door that opens and defeat or avoid the Shell Blades.
  5. Open the chest for a small key.

On Nintendo 64, lighting the torches with an arrow requires a clear line through the flame. If the door does not open, check that both unlit torches are burning rather than assuming the room is bugged.

Explore the drained hub and the spinning-water route

Open the lower passage

  1. Return to the central chamber.
  2. Push the large block into its hole to reveal a lower route.
  3. Use the Iron Boots to sink through the underwater section.
  4. Remove the boots at the next opening so Link rises through the passage.

The alternating sink-and-rise sequence is deliberate. If Link stops below a ceiling, remove the boots; if he floats past the underwater ledge, equip them again and reposition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cross the water-spout and whirlpool room

  1. Cross the water-spout gap and enter the room with swirling water.
  2. Land on the underwater ledge rather than drifting directly into a whirlpool.
  3. Use the Hookshot on the switch inside the dragon’s mouth.
  4. Immediately use the wall target to cross the timed gate.
  5. Float upward and open the chest for another small key.

The gate is timed, so stand where the dragon-mouth switch and your next target are both easy to reach. Missing the opening is harmless: reset your position and activate the switch again instead of searching for another entrance.

Raise the water to middle and get the hidden key

Reach the second Triforce mark

  1. From the central chamber, find the locked door at the base of the central tower.
  2. Use one of your small keys to open it.
  3. Follow the passage to the second Triforce mark.
  4. Play Zelda’s Lullaby to raise the water to its middle level.

Watch the central platform rise as the room fills. The movement reveals the next route; it is not merely a visual change.

Enter the hole beneath the floating platform

  1. Return to the central chamber and stand beneath the raised platform.
  2. Equip the Iron Boots and sink into the opening directly under it.
  3. Activate the crystal switch in the lower section.
  4. Defeat the enemies released from above or move past them safely.
  5. Remove the Iron Boots, float upward, and open the chest for the small key.

If you are asking, “Where is the missing small key?” or “How do I get into the hole under the central platform?”, this is the answer: the water must be at the middle level, and Link must sink into the opening revealed when the platform rises. At low water the opening is not the same route, and at high water it is no longer the intended key solution.

Collect the extra key and compass, then raise the water to its highest level

Bomb the cracked wall in Ruto’s room

  1. Lower the water again when necessary so you can revisit the room where you first found Ruto.
  2. Inspect the cracked wall and place a bomb beside it.
  3. Enter the revealed space and open the chest for another small key.

This key is easy to miss because the room looks complete after Ruto’s encounter. Make the cracked wall part of your low-water checklist.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Get the Compass in the east-side spike room

  1. Raise the water to the middle level.
  2. Take the east-side route to the spike room.
  3. Activate the crystal switch and move through the timed opening.
  4. Position yourself near the chest, or use a projectile to trigger the switch from a useful angle.
  5. Open the chest for the Compass.

The crystal switch is timed. If the gate closes before you reach the chest, adjust your starting position rather than trying to fight the room faster. On the edition where the switch is on the opposite side of the gate, follow the visible switch location instead of the N64-style sequence.

Use the west route to the third Triforce mark

  1. From middle water, take the west-side route.
  2. Use its water spout to gain the height needed to continue.
  3. Reach the third Triforce mark.
  4. Play Zelda’s Lullaby to raise the water to its highest level.

After the water rises, return to the central chamber before exploring. The east and west passages now connect to upper platforms that were unreachable at lower settings.

Reach Dark Link and claim the Longshot

Navigate the high-water routes

  1. At highest water, traverse the east passage.
  2. Move the block as the route requires, then return toward the west-side locked door.
  3. Enter the moving-platform and water-control rooms.
  4. Continue into the room that resembles an illusion or empty corridor.

High water can make the temple feel less logical because some paths seem to send you away from the central tower. Use the map and your level note: you are looking for the west-side locked route and the moving-platform sequence, not a new water control.

Trigger and defeat Dark Link

  1. In the illusion-like room, approach the far door.
  2. Turn around when you reach it; this triggers the Dark Link encounter.
  3. Defeat Dark Link with your sword and preferred combat technique.
  4. Open the chest that appears to obtain the Longshot.

The Longshot is the temple’s major progression break. It reaches targets and platforms farther away than the Hookshot, so revisit side passages that previously ended just short of a ledge or target.

Use the Longshot to find the remaining keys and Boss Key

Recheck the water level before every side route

Do not assume that highest water is the correct setting for every Longshot destination. Lower or raise the water whenever a route is blocked by a submerged doorway, a platform height, or a passage that requires a specific depth. After each change, return to the central chamber and inspect the newly usable doors.

Cross the Longshot gaps

  • Use the Longshot on distant wall targets and platforms that the Hookshot could not reach.
  • Use it to cross gaps in side passages rather than attempting a jump.
  • Search rooms that were visible on the map but inaccessible before the Dark Link fight.
  • Collect the remaining small keys as each newly reachable chest becomes available.

Survive the boulder-and-vortex route

  1. Enter the route containing moving boulders and whirlpools.
  2. Stay clear of the centers of the whirlpools; being pulled in can undo your positioning.
  3. Watch the boulder timing and move through openings rather than crossing while a boulder is passing.
  4. Use the Longshot to reach targets on the far side when a safe foothold is not available.

Continue through the side passages until you reach the Boss Key chest. The Boss Key is a separate late-dungeon pickup; obtaining the Longshot does not open the boss door by itself.

Return to the central chamber after the Boss Key

Once you have the Boss Key, restore the water level required by the north-side route. If the large dragon target at the north side of the central chamber is not positioned for a Longshot connection, the water setting is wrong. Adjust it, return to the hub, and use the Longshot on that target to reach the boss door.

Reach and defeat Morpha

Enter the boss arena

Use the Longshot on the large dragon target on the north side of the central chamber. Cross to the boss door and enter Morpha’s room.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep to the surrounding ledge

  1. Stay on the ledge around the perimeter of the room instead of standing in the water.
  2. Watch the water tentacles and keep your distance so they cannot grab Link easily.
  3. When Morpha’s exposed nucleus moves within reach, use the Longshot to pull it out of the water.
  4. Strike the nucleus with your sword while it is vulnerable.
  5. Move back to the ledge and repeat the pull-and-strike cycle until Morpha is defeated.

The safe rhythm is distance, Longshot, sword strike, retreat. Chasing the nucleus through the water gives the tentacles more opportunities to grab you and turns a controlled fight into a scramble.

Water Temple lost? Use this recovery checklist

What you see Likely cause Next action
You cannot find the missing small key. The central platform is not at middle water. Use the second Triforce mark, raise the water to middle, sink beneath the floating platform, trigger the crystal switch, and float to the chest.
A torch door will not open. One of the two unlit torches is still dark. Use the lit torch as an arrow-flame source or cast Din’s Fire and verify both torches are burning.
You cannot reach a room shown on the map. The entrance is at the wrong water height or needs the Longshot. Return to the hub, change the level, and recheck the route after the Dark Link fight.
The timed gate closes before you pass. You activated the crystal switch from an inefficient position. Stand closer to the chest or use a projectile so the gate opens while you are already lined up.
You cannot find the Dark Link fight. You have not entered the high-water west-side sequence or have not turned around at the far door. Raise the water to highest, follow the moving-platform route, approach the far door, and turn around.
The north-side dragon target is out of reach. The central chamber water is not at the level required by the boss route. Change the level at the appropriate Triforce mark, return to the hub, and try the Longshot again.

A compact progression checklist

  1. Find the entrance Triforce mark, drain the temple, light the two torches, and take the first small key.
  2. Use the drained hub’s block, sink-and-rise passage, and spinning-water room to take the next key.
  3. Open the tower door, raise the water to middle, and get the key beneath the floating central platform.
  4. At low water, bomb the cracked wall in Ruto’s room for the additional key.
  5. At middle water, collect the Compass in the east spike room and use the west water spout to reach the third Triforce mark.
  6. Raise the water to highest, complete the moving-platform route, turn around at the far door, defeat Dark Link, and collect the Longshot.
  7. Use the Longshot and further water-level changes to collect the remaining keys and Boss Key.
  8. Restore the water level for the north-side dragon target, enter Morpha’s room, and pull the nucleus out of the water for sword strikes.

The temple stops being a maze when every return to the central chamber has a purpose: identify the current water level, check what became reachable, and spend keys only on doors that advance this checklist.
