You may press those three buttons in any order. When all three are selected, the locked door opens and the route toward the Church becomes available.
Where the Cliffside door puzzle appears
This puzzle is encountered during Chapter 2 in the Cliffs area, while Ada is travelling toward the Church. The door is beside a circular Stone Dais, also described as a pedestal. Three bright-yellow environmental markings provide the clues for the three buttons you must select.

The game does not present the answer as a written code. Instead, it places each yellow marking in a different part of the surrounding cliffside. You can inspect all three clues and reconstruct the pattern, or use the positions directly if you only want to continue.

Stand at the Stone Dais and treat the circular button arrangement as a clock-like layout. Start with the symbol at the top and count around the circle. Select the buttons in positions:
#1 Best Overall
- Reawaken a Classic – Resident Evil 4 preserves the essence of the original game, now reconstructed using Capcom’s proprietary RE Engine to deliver realistic visuals and additional narrative depth to the iconic story that was not possible at the time of the original release.
- Modernized Gameplay – The team from 2019’s Resident Evil 2 returns to build upon the series’ modern approach to survival horror. Engage in frenzied combat with the Ganados villagers, explore a European village gripped by madness, and solve puzzles to access new areas and collect useful items for Leon and Ashley’s constant struggle to survive.
- Overwhelming Hordes – Face hordes of rabid enemies that threaten to overwhelm Leon with even more diverse methods of attack than in the original release.
- Survive on a Knife’s Edge – Years of intense training have taught Leon new ways to use his knife, helping to even the odds against the unrelenting onslaught of enemies. By parrying enemy attacks, you can avoid debilitating damage and evade lunging enemies seeking to grab Leon and hold him in place. Make smart use of scavenged knives to deliver precise finishing moves on vulnerable enemies, and even use the element of surprise to quietly dispatch unsuspecting foes before they break.

The selections do not have to be entered as a sequence. Pressing 1, then 4, then 7 works, but so does any other order, such as 7, 1, and 4. The door opens after the complete set of three correct positions has been selected.
How to find all three yellow symbols
If you want to solve the puzzle from the environmental clues rather than enter the positions immediately, inspect the area in three stages. Each clue is visible from a different viewpoint.
1. Find the marking beside the locked door
- Walk up to the locked Cliffside door.
- Face the door and inspect the wall immediately to its right.
- Look for the bright-yellow symbol painted on that wall.
This is the easiest marking to locate because it is beside the puzzle itself. Examine the complete shape rather than the surrounding rock: the clue is painted in yellow and is intended to stand out from the cliff surface.

- Return to the Stone Dais area.
- Turn around from the pedestal and look toward the grapple point and the higher catwalk.
- Inspect the cliff wall behind or near that route for the second yellow marking.
The second clue is not next to the door. You need to look away from the pedestal toward the traversal route above. If the marking is not immediately visible, adjust your position so the grapple point, catwalk and cliff face are in view together.
3. Find the marking from the upper platform
- Use the grapple point to reach the upper wooden platform.
- Walk to the far end of that platform.
- Look down toward the surfaces below.
- Move the camera until the separated painted pieces line up and form one symbol.
The third clue is deliberately viewed from above. From the wrong angle, it can look like unrelated yellow fragments on different surfaces. The pieces align only when you stand at the far end of the upper platform and aim the camera down until the complete marking becomes clear.
Reading the Stone Dais layout
Once you have seen the three clues, return to the circular pedestal. The important detail is the counting method: begin at the symbol at the top of the circle, call that position 1, and continue around the layout in order.

| Pedestal position | Required? | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Yes | Select this button as one of the three matching symbols. |
| 4 | Yes | Select this button as one of the three matching symbols. |
| 7 | Yes | Select this button as one of the three matching symbols. |
| All other positions | No | Leave these buttons unselected for this puzzle. |
Counting from the top prevents a common mistake: treating the first button you notice, or a symbol’s apparent orientation, as the starting point. The reference point is the top of the circular arrangement, not the door, the pedestal’s nearest edge or the direction Ada is facing.
Exact input procedure
- Approach the Stone Dais beside the Cliffside door.
- Identify the top position in the circular button layout.
- Count around the circle from that top position.
- Select positions 1, 4 and 7.
- Use any order; there is no required sequence.
- Wait for the puzzle to register the complete selection and check that the door has opened.
You do not need to press the three buttons in the same order in which you discovered the painted clues. The puzzle checks whether the correct set has been selected, not whether you reproduced a prescribed input sequence.
What happens when the puzzle is solved
After the three correct positions are selected, the locked door opens. This unlocks the route that continues toward the Church. There is no separate confirmation code to enter after the symbols have been chosen, and no second arrangement to solve at the doorway.
If you are still facing a closed door, return your attention to the pedestal: the usual issue is that one of the three required positions was missed, or that the circular layout was counted from a point other than the top.
Troubleshooting the most common mistakes
The numbers seem wrong
Check your starting point. Position 1 is the button at the top of the circular layout. Count around the circle from there, rather than counting from the button nearest Ada or from whichever symbol is easiest to see.
You found only two yellow markings
Use the three viewpoints in sequence: the wall immediately to the right of the door, the cliff wall near the grapple point and higher catwalk, and the area below the upper wooden platform. The third clue is split across surfaces and must be viewed from above so its pieces align.

The third clue looks like random fragments
That marking is designed to be read from the upper platform. Grapple up, walk to the platform’s far end and look down. Adjust the camera until the separated sections visually join into a single symbol.
The door did not open after one or two presses
The door opens only after all three correct positions have been selected. Pressing one or two matching buttons is not enough, and selecting an incorrect position does not replace a missing required button.
You pressed the correct buttons in a different order
Order is not a failure condition here. Any order works, so do not reset solely because you did not press the positions from lowest to highest or in the order you inspected the clues.
Exploration solution versus the direct answer
There are no alternate successful combinations once the three clues are identified. The choice is only how you want to reach the same input.
| Approach | What you do | Best for | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Explore the clues | Inspect the wall beside the door, the cliff wall near the grapple route and the split marking viewed from the upper platform. | Players who want to understand how the environment communicates the answer. | Select the matching three pedestal positions and open the door. |
| Use the direct solution | Count from the top of the Stone Dais and select positions 1, 4 and 7 in any order. | Players who already know the code or want to continue without searching. | The same door unlocks and the Church route opens. |
Exploration does not produce a different reward or a different door state. It simply lets you verify why those three positions are correct.

If you prefer to solve the puzzle naturally, use a fixed viewing order. First inspect the yellow paint beside the door while you are already standing there. Next, turn from the pedestal toward the grapple point and higher catwalk to locate the cliff-wall marking. Finally, grapple to the upper wooden platform, walk all the way to its far end and look down for the composite marking. After that, return to the Stone Dais and count from the top.

This order separates the three clues by viewpoint and makes the elevated marking less likely to be overlooked. It also avoids repeatedly moving between the door and the upper platform while trying to remember which wall you have already checked.
