In Quordle’s Classic mode, you have nine shared guesses to solve four five-letter words. Use early guesses to test useful letters across the boards, track each board’s clues separately, then focus later guesses on the answers you have narrowed down. This approach follows the game’s rules; no source here establishes a guaranteed win rate or a Quordle-specific best starting word.
Check the mode before you start
The nine-guess strategy in this guide is for Classic. Quordle’s game page also lists modes with different rules, so confirm your selection before you count on a particular attempt budget.

Understand what each board is telling you
Quordle presents four five-letter words. A submitted guess is shared across the unsolved boards, but each board returns its own feedback. The game’s on-screen keyboard also tracks letter status; use it as a reference, while reading the tiles on each board as the evidence for that word.
- Green: the letter is correct and in the correct position.
- Yellow: the letter is in the word but in a different position.
- Gray: the letter is absent from that board.
These color meanings are described in the Quordle.uk rules explainer. Keep the clues board-specific: a gray letter on one board can still be part of a word on another.
Use early guesses to gather information
Because each guess produces feedback on multiple boards, an early word is valuable when it tests several common, distinct letters rather than making a narrow, speculative attempt at just one answer. Think of a guess as doing two possible jobs: gathering information breadth by testing letters and positions across boards, and making solution progress by completing or sharply narrowing one word.
Early in the round, information breadth can help you build a useful picture of all four words. This is a tactical inference from the shared-guess mechanic, not a measured guarantee that any particular word or strategy is optimal. No Quordle-specific optimal starter or win-rate figure is established by the sources cited here.

After every submission, update the possibilities for each board independently. A candidate must fit every clue on that board—not just the most recent row.

- Keep letters fixed in green positions.
- Include known yellow letters, but not in positions where they appeared yellow.
- Exclude letters that are gray on that board.
- Do not carry a board’s absent-letter clues over to another board.
The keyboard can help you notice letter status, but board-specific feedback is what determines whether a letter is ruled out for a particular answer.
Shift from discovery to solving
As the round develops, some boards will have fewer plausible answers than others. Spend guesses where they can do the most useful work: when a board is still uncertain, test letters that help distinguish its remaining candidates; when it is tightly constrained, favor a guess that can actually solve it. If a word can both advance one board and test useful letters for other unsolved boards, it can serve both purposes.

Keep an eye on the shared budget. After each turn, count how many of the nine guesses remain. Near the end, a speculative word that only provides information may be less useful than a valid answer for a constrained board. The balance depends on the clues you have, not on a fixed sequence of starter words.
