How to Solve NYT Connections: Strategies for Spotting Categories and Avoiding Mistakes

To solve NYT Connections consistently, treat every guess as part of a 16-word partition: identify four words that share a precise relationship, then verify that removing them leaves three equally credible groups. The game deliberately includes overlaps, so a plausible set is not enough. Scan the entire board, describe each candidate category in a short phrase, test every word against that phrase, and reject a group if it makes the remaining board incoherent.

What NYT Connections asks you to do

Each daily Connections puzzle presents 16 words. Your task is to divide all of them into four groups of four, with one intended solution for the complete board. A category can be based on a direct meaning, a shared reference, a word pattern, or another relationship chosen by the editors.

The four colors indicate relative difficulty: Yellow is the easiest category and Purple is the trickiest. The official rules do not assign a permanent type of relationship to any color. For example, Purple is not officially defined as wordplay, and Yellow is not officially defined as a particular subject area. Use the colors as difficulty signals, not as clues to a fixed category formula.

Words are intentionally selected so that some can appear to belong to more than one category. That ambiguity is the central challenge. A set of four that looks perfect in isolation can still be wrong if one of its words is needed to complete a stronger group elsewhere. Editors curate the word and category set using the Oxford Dictionary, and the finished puzzle has one intended solution.

A reliable solving workflow

The following process is a practical method rather than a published NYT algorithm. It follows from the game’s overlap and single-solution design.

1. Scan all 16 words before selecting anything

Read the entire board at least twice. On the first pass, mark immediate associations without submitting a guess. On the second, look for less literal links: a word that can be a verb and a noun, a proper name shared by several entries, a spelling pattern, or a phrase completed by each word.

Do not lock onto the first four familiar words. Early recognition is useful for finding an anchor, but it can also hide a more restrictive category that uses one of those words differently.

2. State each candidate category in a short phrase

Before clicking four tiles, say what unites them in as few words as possible. “Types of ___,” “words that follow ___,” “___ associated with ___,” or “can mean ___” are useful formats. If the explanation requires a different excuse for each word, the category is probably too loose.

For every proposed member, complete the sentence explicitly. A group should survive a literal test, not just feel related. If your phrase changes halfway through—such as mixing brands, people, and objects under a broad topic—put the group aside.

3. Check for overlap before submitting

When five or more words seem to fit a theme, stop. The official rules warn that words may appear to fit multiple categories. Compare the competing words and ask which four make the narrowest, most defensible set. Then inspect the words you would leave behind. A category that claims four obvious terms but strands two unrelated leftovers is usually the trap.

4. Evaluate the whole partition

For each candidate group, mentally remove its four words and try to form three coherent groups from the remaining 12. This whole-board check is essential because the puzzle has one complete solution. A locally convincing group is not valid if it prevents the other categories from forming naturally.

5. Submit the most constrained group first

Prefer a category with a precise definition and little overlap. A set tied to one exact spelling pattern or a clearly bounded reference is safer than a broad set such as “things found in a kitchen.” Solving a high-confidence group reduces the search space and may reveal the intended use of ambiguous words.

6. Re-read the reduced board after every solve

Do not keep using your original interpretation once four tiles disappear. The remaining words may now reveal a phrase, grammatical role, or shared reference that was invisible on the full board. Re-scan from the beginning rather than simply looking for another group that resembles the one you just found.

7. Use feedback as information, not as a verdict

When a submission is rejected, identify which assumption failed. Was one word only a loose association? Did two words belong to a different category? Did you overlook a second meaning? Keep a short mental record of the disputed tile instead of repeatedly submitting variations of the same idea.

How to spot categories that are easy to miss

Meaning-based groups

Start with the most direct relationship: four words that are members of the same class or can all be described by one definition. Check the level of abstraction. “Animals” is usually too broad, while a narrower class such as a specific type of animal, object, or action is more likely to be intended.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test singular and plural forms carefully. A word may name an object in one context and an action in another. Connections often exploits that grammatical flexibility, so write down both readings before deciding that a tile does not belong.

Phrase and collocation groups

Try placing a common word before or after each candidate. The connection may be a familiar compound, title, idiom, or phrase rather than a shared definition. The added word must form a recognized expression with all four entries; an expression that works only in one unusual sentence is weak evidence.

Names, titles, and cultural references

Proper nouns can connect through a person, place, fictional character, work, or institution. Keep the category precise: “names of characters in one series” is stronger than “things associated with entertainment.” Check capitalization and spelling, but do not assume that every capitalized-looking term is a proper noun; a word can be capitalized in a title yet function as an ordinary term elsewhere.

Word-form and spelling patterns

Look for prefixes, suffixes, repeated letters, abbreviations, homophones, and words that become another term when a letter is added or removed. A spelling category should be exact. If one member requires a different transformation, the pattern is probably not intended.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Parts of speech and multiple definitions

Ask whether four entries can all be verbs, all nouns, or all adjectives in a particular use. Also check dictionary senses: a common word may have an uncommon technical or figurative meaning. Because the editorial process uses the Oxford Dictionary, a less familiar sense can be legitimate, but it should still produce a clean, explainable category.

Sound-based and visual clues

Pronunciation, homophones, letter names, and visual shape can matter. Say potential groups aloud if a sound connection is possible. For a visual or typographic pattern, verify every character rather than relying on how the words look at a glance.

How to avoid the most common mistakes

Do not submit four words merely because they share a topic

Topic similarity is weaker than a defined relationship. Four words related to travel, food, or music may be deliberately mixed across separate categories. Replace a broad label with a testable one and see whether all four entries meet it in the same way.

Do not force the fifth match

Five apparent members are a warning, not confirmation. Make a small comparison:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Question What to test
Which four fit most exactly? Every word should satisfy the same definition, phrase, or transformation.
What happens to the fifth? It should have a credible role in another group, not be left without a partner.
Which choice creates cleaner leftovers? Prefer the choice that allows three coherent categories to remain.

Do not treat a familiar word as having only one sense

The obvious meaning is often the decoy. For each ambiguous tile, list at least two plausible readings—literal, figurative, grammatical, or proper-name—and see which reading supports the full partition. Avoid inventing an obscure sense solely to rescue a weak group.

Do not confuse a near-match with an exact match

“Often seen with,” “used by,” and “associated with” can describe almost anything. Ask whether the connection is conventional and specific enough that a different editor could explain it the same way. If not, keep searching.

Do not reshuffle randomly after a miss

Use a failed guess diagnostically. Identify the least certain tile, remove it from your theory, and test the other three against the remaining board. Random combinations discard useful information and make it harder to recognize the original trap.

Do not assume a color tells you the category type

Yellow through Purple communicate relative difficulty, with Yellow easiest and Purple hardest. They do not officially guarantee that a color represents a particular kind of wordplay, subject, or grammar. Let the words determine the category.

A practical decision framework for an ambiguous board

  1. Mark anchors: identify one or two words with a narrow, verifiable relationship to several others.
  2. Write candidate phrases: give each possible group a one-line explanation and mark uncertain members.
  3. Score precision: prefer groups where all four words fit identically, not merely thematically.
  4. Perform the removal test: mentally delete the group and search for three complete categories among the leftovers.
  5. Resolve collisions: when one word belongs to two plausible groups, choose the assignment that makes both categories more exact and leaves no stranded tile.
  6. Commit once: submit only after the group and the resulting partition both look sound.

This framework prevents a common error: optimizing one category while ignoring the rest of the board. The intended answer is a four-way arrangement, not four independent trivia questions.

Hypothetical example of the overlap test

Imagine a board containing eight words that seem to form two groups. Four are clearly types of a particular object, but one of those four also forms a familiar phrase with three words in a second set. Instead of choosing the first four, compare the two partitions:

  • Candidate A uses the broad object category and leaves a phrase missing its strongest member.
  • Candidate B uses the narrower phrase and leaves four words that share the same object definition.

Candidate B is stronger because both groups remain exact after the overlap is resolved. The example is illustrative, not a quotation from a specific daily puzzle; the principle is to judge the complete partition.

What to do when you are stuck

Search for the least flexible words

Set aside generic terms and focus on unusual spellings, names, technical words, or entries with a distinctive grammatical form. Rare or constrained words often reveal a category faster than common words with many possible meanings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Change the lens

If semantic groupings fail, switch deliberately to phrases, sounds, spelling, parts of speech, and cultural references. Do not cycle through the same broad themes. A change in lens can expose a connection that was present all along.

Work backward from the endgame

Once eight or 12 words remain, ask what exact category would explain the most unusual leftovers. Endgame boards contain less noise, so a word that seemed unhelpful earlier may become the anchor.

Stop before frustration creates random guesses

If every proposed group contains a weak member, pause and reread the full board. A short reset is more useful than submitting several low-confidence combinations. The goal is to improve the explanation, not to increase the number of attempts.

What a 2025 study can—and cannot—tell you about intuition

A 2025 Association for Computational Linguistics paper examined NYT Connections as a word-relationship reasoning task. Its experiment analyzed 100 puzzles selected around the corpus’s median difficulty rating and compared one-try, no-hint, and “one away” hint conditions. Three human evaluators participated, so the findings describe that controlled setup rather than the general player population.

In the paper’s Full Hints condition, the human result averaged 60.67% across the three evaluators. The best-performing tested model in that condition was reported at 40.25%. These figures suggest that shallow similarity is not enough and that people in the experiment were better at integrating relationships under those conditions. They are not a universal score for human solving ability, nor a prediction of how any individual will perform on today’s board.

The practical lesson is modest but useful: when a language model, search result, or your first intuition proposes a category, verify the relationship and the remaining partition yourself. A plausible explanation can still fail the whole-board test.

How to build a personal mistake log

After solving, record only information that will change your future decisions. For each miss, note the trap type—broad topic, alternate definition, phrase overlap, spelling pattern, or proper-name association—and the word that caused the collision. After several puzzles, look for recurring habits:

  • You submit the first four familiar words without checking leftovers.
  • You reject uncommon dictionary senses too quickly.
  • You accept “associated with” as a category without a precise rule.
  • You overlook grammatical or spelling connections because you search only by topic.
  • You keep a rejected interpretation after the board has changed.

Use the pattern to change one behavior at a time. For example, if broad-topic guesses cause most misses, require a one-sentence definition before every submission. If phrase categories escape you, spend one scan looking only for words that can share a prefix or suffix.

Quick checklist before you submit

  • Can you state one exact category phrase for all four words?
  • Does each word fit in the same grammatical or semantic way?
  • Have you tested the fifth word that appears to belong?
  • Do the remaining 12 words still support three plausible groups?
  • Are you relying on a broad association, an invented phrase, or a single obscure sense?
  • Have you reconsidered ambiguous words under a second meaning?
  • Are you treating the color as a difficulty signal rather than a category label?

If any answer is uncertain, keep scanning instead of submitting. A slower, whole-board decision is usually safer than a fast guess based on one attractive connection.
