The most reliable way to solve NYT Connections is to delay your first guess. Read every entry, write a precise rule for each proposed group, challenge any set with a tempting fifth member, then submit the group with the fewest overlaps. Once a group is confirmed, use the reduced board to test harder wordplay and eliminate entries systematically.
What NYT Connections asks you to solve
Connections presents 16 words. Your task is to divide them into four groups of four, with every group sharing a defensible connection. The New York Times Help Center describes four difficulty colors: yellow is easiest, followed by green, blue and purple as the trickiest. The colors indicate editorial difficulty, not a required order of play.

There is exactly one intended solution. The Help Center puts the central challenge this way: "Each puzzle has exactly one solution and is meant to be tricky by having words that could fit into multiple categories." Editors curate the words and categories using the Oxford Dictionary, so a familiar association is not enough by itself; your proposed rule must fit exactly four entries and leave the rest for other groups.

Prepare before your first guess
Give yourself a clean view of all 16 tiles. On a phone, avoid tapping a tile while you are still scanning; accidental selections can make you feel committed to a theory you have not tested. If you solve on paper, copy the words into four rough columns and leave space to move entries. The aim is not to create a complicated system but to make competing interpretations visible.
Use a two-pass read. First, notice obvious families without deciding that any one is correct. Second, deliberately search for alternate meanings: a word can be a common noun, a surname, a place, a title, a sound or part of a phrase. This mental reset is particularly useful when the first four words you notice seem to form a perfect category.
A repeatable solving method
1. Read the entire board before selecting anything
Scan all 16 entries at least twice. On the first pass, mark obvious relationships without committing: animals, foods, occupations, abbreviations, titles, colors, places or words that might pair with a shared term. On the second pass, look for entries that could belong to more than one idea.

If you select a group after seeing only three attractive matches, you are letting the first pattern you noticed control the puzzle. Connections is designed to punish that habit.
2. State each candidate group as a testable rule
Replace vague impressions with a sentence that another person could check. “These feel related” is not a rule. Stronger formulations include:
- “These four are species of fish.”
- “Each word can follow the same missing word to make a familiar phrase.”
- “Each entry becomes a different word when its first letter is changed.”
- “These are surnames of people who played the same role.”
Write the four entries beside the rule, then list any plausible fifth entry. A category is not ready to submit if you cannot explain why the fifth entry is excluded.
Be precise about grammatical form. If three entries are nouns and one is an adjective, ask whether the category genuinely allows both or whether you are stretching the definition. Likewise, distinguish a shared dictionary meaning from a loose association. “Things seen at a beach” is usually too broad; “words that precede a particular noun in established phrases” is testable.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →3. Look for overlaps and decoys
For every proposed set, ask three questions:
- Does each selected entry satisfy the rule in the same way, or is one relying on a looser interpretation?
- Could any selected entry fit another strong category on the board?
- Does an unselected entry fit this rule more naturally than one of the four you chose?
When five words appear to fit, the puzzle is often asking you to identify the exact four that share the intended definition. The best choice is usually the set with the most uniform relationship, not the one with the most colorful or memorable association.
A useful tie-breaker is substitution testing. Remove each candidate in turn and insert the apparent fifth word. If one replacement makes the rule noticeably more natural, your original set was probably wrong. Also ask whether the remaining 12 words can still form three coherent groups. A locally attractive group that leaves chaos is weaker than a slightly less obvious group that improves the whole board.
4. Rank candidates by certainty, not by color
Once you have several possible groups, submit the one whose rule is clearest and least overlapping. This is a practical strategy, not an official requirement. The yellow label may suggest an easier category, but the game does not require you to solve yellow first, and a supposedly easy group can still contain a decoy.
Before pressing submit, perform a final contradiction check: if this group is correct, can you still describe plausible groups for the remaining 12 words? If removing one entry makes the rest of the board substantially cleaner, swap that entry before guessing.
Do not try to predict the color from the category. A familiar subject can be made difficult by a near-fit word, while an unusual-looking category can be mechanically exact. Color is editorial information about relative difficulty, not a clue that identifies the mechanism or tells you which button to press next.

5. Rebuild your model after every confirmed group
A correct group changes the puzzle. Do not continue defending a theory that depended on one of the removed words. Re-read the remaining entries from scratch, while keeping alternate meanings in mind. A word that looked like a sports term on the full board may become an obvious phrase component once three distractions disappear.
Avoid guesses that differ from your previous attempt by only one word unless you can explain the swap. Repeating near-identical guesses consumes opportunities without adding information; a new hypothesis should account for a previously unexplained conflict.
After each solve, summarize what the removed group taught you. Perhaps a word was being used as a proper name rather than a common noun, or perhaps the board favors phrase completion over literal categories. This is not a guarantee of the next answer, but it keeps you from applying the same failed interpretation repeatedly.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems6. Switch from meaning to structure when the board stalls
If no literal category accounts for four leftovers, inspect how the words are built or used. Test these possibilities:
- Shared prefix or suffix: the same letters attach to each entry to form new words.
- Phrase completion: one missing word combines naturally with all four entries.
- Contained words: each entry includes a shorter word with a common property.
- Sound relationships: the entries are homophones, near-homophones or words that become another term when pronounced.
- Spelling transformations: changing, removing or rearranging letters produces a consistent result.
- Names and titles: a word may be a surname, character name, place name or title rather than its everyday dictionary meaning.
These checks are a fallback when semantic groupings fail; they are not a claim that every purple group is wordplay. Purple is officially the trickiest color, but its specific mechanism varies by puzzle.
For a phrase category, write the completed expression rather than merely saying that the words “go with” something. Say each phrase aloud and check whether all four are established expressions. For a spelling category, write the operation over every entry; if the rule changes halfway through, you have two patterns rather than one group.
7. Finish by elimination, then verify the rule
After two or three groups are secure, inspect only the remaining entries. Even then, do not accept a leftover set merely because it is all that remains. State the common rule explicitly and confirm that all four entries satisfy it in the same sense. If one word requires a pun while the other three are literal, revisit an earlier group for a misplaced decoy.
Recommended Free Tools
Elimination is strongest when it follows proof. It is weakest when it is used to rationalize four words that never shared a clear connection. Treat the final group as a fresh hypothesis, even if the board seems to force it.
Use a candidate-group worksheet
A small table prevents a striking first association from becoming an unsupported guess. You can make one on paper or in a notes app:
| Candidate entries | Proposed rule | Possible extra entry | Overlap risk | Confidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Four words you can name | One short, testable sentence | Any fifth word that might fit | Which entries have another strong home? | High, medium or low |
Keep the rule shorter than the explanation. If you need a paragraph to justify why one entry belongs, that entry is probably a decoy or the category is too broad.
You can add one more column for the consequence of removal: write what three groups might remain if this candidate is correct. This turns the worksheet into a whole-board test rather than a collection of isolated hunches. Mark uncertain entries with a question mark instead of repeatedly moving them; visible uncertainty is easier to challenge than hidden commitment.

Recognize the main kinds of Connections categories
Literal semantic categories
These are groups linked by ordinary meaning: types of tools, kinds of weather, members of an occupation or examples of a food. They are often easiest to spot, but broad meanings create the near-fit trap. Narrow the definition until exactly four entries qualify.

Named-entity categories
Entries may be people, fictional characters, locations, brands, institutions or titles. Capitalization can help, but do not rely on it alone; many proper names are also common words. Ask what shared role or source makes the four names belong together.
Phrase and collocation categories
Several entries may pair with one hidden word before or after them. Say the complete phrases aloud or write them out. A phrase that is grammatical but unfamiliar is weaker than a set of established expressions, and one awkward pairing can signal an incorrect candidate.
Orthographic and sound categories
Letter patterns, abbreviations, homophones and transformations often explain the final stubborn group. Check whether the operation is identical for all four entries. If one word needs a different spelling change, the pattern is not yet proved.

Categories based on roles or contexts
Sometimes the connection is not what the words mean but where they appear: positions in a game, parts of a publication, terms used in a profession or labels associated with a particular institution. State the shared context precisely and verify that every entry belongs to it, rather than grouping words that merely occur in the same broad setting.
Why surface resemblance causes mistakes
A computational analysis by Angel Yahir Loredo Lopez, Tyler McDonald and Ali Emami examined 358 Connections puzzles collected from June 12, 2023 through June 3, 2024. Its relevance to solving is not a player win-rate claim; it illustrates that words close in ordinary meaning can be clustered together even when they belong to different intended categories. In practical terms, semantic similarity is a clue for generating candidates, not proof that a group is correct.
That distinction explains why the board can feel unfair when it is actually precise. A word can be related to an apparent category and still be the wrong member because another entry has a tighter relationship. Require the same type and strength of connection for all four.
Imagine four words that all evoke travel. One may be a vehicle, one a destination, one a verb and one a brand. Their shared theme is real but too loose for a valid group. Connections rewards the narrower relation that accounts for the exact wording and preserves a unique solution.
Common traps and how to recover
The near-fit decoy
Symptom: five or six entries seem to belong to one obvious topic.
Recovery: define the category more narrowly, compare each candidate’s exact relationship and reserve the word with the strongest alternative category. Do not choose the four that arrived in your mind first.
Surface-semantic clustering
Symptom: words share a broad meaning, but the remaining board has no coherent groups.
Recovery: temporarily set aside the broad cluster and search for phrase, spelling, sound or named-entity relationships. Return to the semantic idea only if it accounts for exactly four entries and leaves workable leftovers.
Assuming the color dictates the order
Symptom: you hunt for yellow first or reject a clear group because it does not seem to match the expected difficulty.

Recovery: use certainty and low overlap as your ordering criteria. Colors communicate editorial difficulty; they do not prescribe a solving sequence.
Forcing every category to be literal
Symptom: the last four words appear unrelated in meaning.
Recovery: run the structural checklist: shared affixes, missing-word phrases, embedded words, sounds and spelling changes. Treat each as a hypothesis and demand a uniform rule.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Guessing without learning from the board
Symptom: successive attempts change one entry but preserve the same unsupported theory.
Recovery: identify the contradiction that caused the previous failure, discard that assumption and build a different candidate. A useful new guess should explain information the old one could not.
Overvaluing an obscure connection
Symptom: a dictionary, celebrity or technical link can be found for four words, but the connection feels forced.
Recovery: compare it with simpler categories that use ordinary, established meanings. The intended rule should be defensible without a chain of special pleading, even when the words themselves are unfamiliar.

The following is an invented illustration of the method, not a daily puzzle:
Board: BASS, CRANE, FLUTE, HORN, LIME, MINT, PEAR, PLUM, RING, ROBIN, ROSE, SAGE, SEAL, SWAN, TUBA, VIOLA.
- Scan: BASS, FLUTE, HORN, TUBA and VIOLA suggest instruments, but there are five apparent fits.
- Test the rule: BASS, FLUTE, HORN and TUBA are instruments; VIOLA is also an instrument, so the candidate is not yet resolved.
- Search for alternatives: CRANE, ROBIN, SEAL and SWAN are animals, which gives VIOLA no natural home in that set. If a different four-word category explains VIOLA, compare both structures before submitting.
- Check phrase or wordplay links: LIME, MINT, PEAR and PLUM are all associated with flavors or fruits, but MINT may also fit a color or plant category. The exact rule must be stated before choosing.
- Use elimination only after proof: once two groups are genuinely confirmed, revisit the remaining words and verify that the final sets use consistent definitions rather than accepting leftovers automatically.
The point of the example is the procedure: identify a pattern, search for a fifth member, test competing homes and submit only when the rule survives those checks.

Best Value
The subscriber archive goes back to June 12, 2023. Archive plays can affect some statistics but do not affect streaks, making them useful for deliberate practice. Try solving an older board without hints, record your candidate rules, then compare your misses with the Bot analysis if your subscription includes it. If you share a hint or result, label it clearly so readers who still want to solve unaided are not spoiled.
What to do after solving
Whether you solved cleanly or used all your mistakes, record the decisive clue. Was it a phrase, a proper name, a spelling operation or a narrow semantic definition? A short note builds a personal library of mechanisms without pretending that any one trick guarantees success.
Review wrong guesses for the exact error, not just the final answer. If your group contained a fifth member, note which word was the intended decoy and what alternate category claimed it. If you missed a sound-based group, write the pronunciations side by side. This turns frustration into a repeatable diagnostic process.
Limits of strategy claims
No verified New York Times population statistic establishes that a particular solving sequence improves win rate by a measured amount. The Help Center documents player statistics, including win rate and mistake distribution, but that is different from publishing a controlled comparison of strategies. The method here is a disciplined way to reason under ambiguity, not a guarantee of a perfect solve.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many words are in NYT Connections?
Each daily board has 16 words. You must divide them into four groups of four, with one intended solution.
Do I have to solve the yellow group first?
No. Yellow is described as the easiest color, but the game does not require a particular solve order. Submit the group with the clearest rule and least overlap.
What should I do when five words fit a category?
Treat the fifth word as a decoy candidate. Compare the exact strength of each relationship, test alternate homes and choose the four that leave the most coherent remaining board.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAre purple categories always wordplay?
No. Purple is officially the trickiest category, but its mechanism varies. Check word structure and phrases when literal meanings do not produce a uniform group.
Is Connections free to play?
The daily puzzle is available free in the Games app, on the Connections web page, through nytimes.com/theathletic and in the News app. Archive access and Connections Bot are limited to specified subscribers.
Does the Connections archive affect my streak?
The Help Center says archive plays can affect some statistics but do not affect streaks. The archive currently reaches back to June 12, 2023.
What does Connections Bot show?
For eligible All Access, Home Delivery and Games subscribers, it can show difficulty comparisons, a skill score, solution uniqueness, category difficulty, solve order, common mistakes and guess-by-guess analysis.
Is there a guaranteed strategy for solving every puzzle?
No. A full-board scan, precise rules, overlap checks, certainty-based submissions and elimination make your reasoning more disciplined, but no published population statistic proves a guaranteed or measured win-rate improvement.
The Bottom Line
Read all 16 words, describe every candidate group with an exact rule, challenge any apparent fifth member and submit the lowest-overlap set. After each confirmed group, rebuild your view of the remaining board; when literal meanings fail, test phrases, names, sounds and spelling. The goal is not to guess faster but to make each guess explain more of the puzzle.
