How the Genesis Configuration mechanic works
A Genesis Configuration puzzle is not solved by finding one shape and pressing confirm. The box has two independently solved faces, and each face requires two separate actions:
- Select the overall configuration. Cycle through the available forms until the silhouette resembles the cut-out in the stone lock.
- Rotate the selected form. Turn the assembly so its lit point and the smaller side pieces line up with the corresponding openings.
- Confirm the first face. The game then presents the opposite face.
- Repeat the selection, rotation, and confirmation steps for face two.
AllThings.How describes L1 and R1 as the buttons for changing configuration and the analogue stick as the rotation control. Button assignments can vary with platform, accessibility settings, or a remapped controller, so the on-screen prompts shown by your copy of the game take priority.

Think of the configuration choice as selecting the correct three-dimensional form and the rotation as orienting that form. A shape can look almost correct while still being turned the wrong way; the glowing point and the side pieces are the reliable alignment cues.

The configuration is therefore part of the required story progression, not an optional collectible challenge.
Sunny’s pillar
When you reach it
This is the lock associated with the “Free Sunny’s Soul” objective. You encounter it after moving through the labyrinth ruins. If you have not reached that objective, you are looking at a different mechanism rather than missing a hidden input for Sunny’s pillar.

Choose the square-shaped configuration. Rotate the completed form until the square presents as a diamond in the slot. The important distinction is orientation: selecting a square is only the first action; its corners must point toward the corresponding corners of the relief.
Face two: inward-facing bridge structures
For the second face, select the configuration made of two parallel, bridge-like structures. Place one structure on the left and the other on the right, with their legs pointing inward toward one another. Confirm only after both bridges sit inside the matching cut-outs.
Confirmation check
If the first face accepts but the reverse face does not, you do not need to redo Sunny’s side. Work on the currently displayed face and verify the inward-pointing legs before confirming.
Hand statue
Unlock condition and location
The Hand statue lock becomes available after you obtain the Hand statue piece from Bruno’s house. Return that piece to the matching gate; the Genesis Configuration is the alignment step at the gate itself.
Face one: stacked curved-top forms
Select the pair of boulder-like shapes with flat bottoms and curved tops. Arrange them parallel, one above the other. Their flat bases should read as horizontal while the curved portions face the same direction. Do not substitute the side-by-side arrangement from the second face.

Face two: the same pair turned sideways
The reverse face uses the same basic two-form design rotated 90 degrees. Place one curved-top form on the left and the other on the right. In other words, the first face is a vertical stack and the second is a horizontal pair. Rotate the assembly rather than searching for an entirely different silhouette.
What to verify before confirming
- Both forms are parallel rather than angled toward each other.
- Their flat bottoms and curved tops match the corresponding edges of the relief.
- The second face has one piece on each side, not one above the other.
Head statue
Unlock condition and location
You reach this configuration after the Hand statue opens the next area and you acquire the Head statue piece there. The gate will not be usable as a Head statue lock before that progression step.
Face one: upright square
Choose the plain square configuration and leave it standing upright. Unlike Sunny’s pillar and the Tongue statue’s first face, this square is not turned onto a corner. Align its four sides with the straight sides of the opening, then confirm.

The second face resembles a border or frame. It has openings on two sides and a star-shaped opening in the middle. Rotate the border so the two gaps are on the left and right. The central star is a useful check, but the side-gap orientation determines whether the frame is correctly turned.
Common orientation error
Players often identify the border correctly and stop before rotating it into the left-right gap position. If the star appears correct but the side openings are above and below, rotate the whole assembly until the gaps move to the sides.
Tongue statue
When it becomes available
The Tongue statue sequence follows the well puzzle in the Head statue area. Once you have obtained the Tongue statue piece, use it at its matching gate and solve the two Genesis faces.
Face one: square turned to a diamond
Select the standard square and rotate it onto one corner so it appears as a diamond. This is the same orientation principle used on Sunny’s pillar, but it occurs at a later statue gate. Match the corners to the illuminated slot before confirming.
Face two: four corner blocks
For the reverse face, choose the configuration composed of four separate corner blocks. The written guide describes each block as petal-like. Position the four pieces in the corners of the relief, leaving the open space in the middle rather than collapsing the pieces into a solid frame.

Checking the four-piece layout
Count the corner positions visually. If one petal-like block has drifted toward the center or an edge, rotate the assembly until all four corners are occupied and the middle remains open.
Factory shrine
Finding the shrine
The final listed configuration is at the shrine inside the factory, near the elevator that leads to Marlowe and Bruno. It is a fixed story location, so reaching the elevator area is the sign that you are at the correct shrine rather than one of the statue gates.
Face one: diamond-oriented square
Use the square configuration and turn it so it appears as a diamond. This first face uses the same diamond-turned square orientation as the Tongue statue’s first face. Match the corners to the shrine’s glowing relief and confirm.

Face two: border with side gaps
The second face uses the border-like configuration with openings on two sides and a star-shaped opening in the center. Turn it so the gaps sit on the left and right, matching the Head statue’s second face. Confirm after the side openings and central star both line up.
Pattern reuse between the locks
Several configurations recur, which makes later puzzles faster once you recognize the silhouettes:

The Hand statue is the exception to simple pattern reuse: its two faces use the same curved-top pair but change from a vertical stack to a horizontal arrangement. Sunny’s pillar also has its own second-face bridge pattern.

These are sequential, story-specific locks rather than alternative versions of the same challenge. The useful comparison is where each one appears, what must be completed first, and which face pattern to recognize.

This table is also a quick way to detect a location mix-up. If you are expecting the four corner blocks but have not completed the well sequence, you are not yet at the Tongue statue gate. If you see a border pattern in the factory, it is the same side-gap orientation used by the Head statue, not a new variation.

How to align a difficult face
Start with the large silhouette
Ignore small protrusions for the first moment and identify the overall mass: square, paired boulders, bridge pair, frame, or four corner blocks. Cycling configurations while trying to judge every notch at once makes the choices harder to distinguish.
Use the glowing point as an anchor
After selecting the broad form, rotate until the lit point reaches the matching point in the relief. Then check the side pieces. This two-stage check is more dependable than judging the outer outline alone because several rotations can make a broad shape look similar.
Compare the empty spaces
Open areas are as informative as stone pieces. The Head and Factory border pattern must leave its gaps on the left and right; the Tongue statue’s four-block face must leave the center open; the Hand statue’s second face must separate the pair horizontally.

Use the relief, not the camera angle
The rotating box can make “left” and “right” feel reversed as the camera moves. Judge the final position against the fixed glowing relief, not against your character’s viewpoint. A piece that appears to be on the right from one camera angle may still be occupying the wrong opening in the lock.
Confirm one face at a time
Each lock has two sides. Once a face is correctly aligned and confirmed, concentrate on the new face rather than trying to preserve the previous orientation. The game’s face transition is the indication that the first half was accepted.
Troubleshooting failed alignments
- The shape seems right, but it will not fit: you probably selected the correct configuration without rotating it into the required orientation. Recheck the lit point and side pieces.
- You cannot find the listed puzzle: check the progression requirement. The Hand and Head gates require their matching statue pieces, and the Tongue gate follows the well puzzle.
- The reverse face looks like a known pattern: use the exact orientation, not just the silhouette. The Factory shrine’s border must have side gaps, while the Hand statue’s pair changes from stacked to side-by-side.
- Controller buttons do not match: use the prompts displayed by your platform and settings. L1/R1 and analogue-stick directions are the mapping described by AllThings.How, not a guarantee for every setup.
- A text description is still ambiguous: compare the physical box with the slot and the glowing relief. GamesRadar+ and GameSpew use screenshots that show the exact alignments more clearly than words alone.
- You confirmed the wrong orientation: return to the currently active face and repeat the shape-selection and rotation steps. Do not assume that a near match will be accepted; the point and side pieces must occupy their corresponding openings.
- You are rotating but the configuration never changes: use the configuration buttons first, then use the rotation input. Shape selection and orientation are separate actions, so turning the stick alone cannot substitute for cycling forms.
- You keep choosing the wrong square: distinguish the upright square at the Head statue from the diamond-oriented square used at Sunny’s pillar, Tongue statue, and Factory shrine. The form is similar, but its required orientation is different.

- Confirm that the required statue piece or preceding objective is complete.
