Size a data-center battery in two separate steps: rate the UPS or power-conversion system for the highest coincident critical load in kW or kVA, then size the battery for the usable kWh required over the operating duration. Generator ride-through, controlled shutdown, islanded operation and utility peak-demand shaving can require radically different runtimes, so there is no universal “data-center battery duration.”

Start with measured interval data, define exactly which loads must remain online, and model the worst duration and recharge window. Then derate usable energy for inverter and battery losses, minimum state of charge, temperature, aging and reserve. The result is a defensible design basis rather than a battery selected from a nameplate load estimate.

What you are actually sizing

A data-center storage system has at least two ratings:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Discharge power: the instantaneous output the UPS, inverter or power-conversion system must deliver, expressed in kW or kVA.
  • Usable energy: the energy that can be delivered while respecting efficiency, state-of-charge limits and end-of-life capacity, expressed in usable kWh.

A 2,000 kW load does not automatically require 2,000 kWh of batteries. It requires 2,000 kW of discharge capability, while the kWh depends on whether the battery must run for 20 seconds, 30 minutes, several hours or repeated tariff intervals. Conversely, a battery with enough kWh can still fail if its inverter cannot meet a sudden step load, motor-start current or power-factor requirement.

For a constant load, the first-order energy calculation is:

Eusable (kWh) = Pcritical (kW) × runtime (h)

For a changing load, integrate the load over the interval:

Eusable = Σ Pcritical,t × Δt

The battery’s nameplate energy must be larger than usable energy because the system cannot normally discharge every cell to zero, and real losses and aging reduce delivered capacity.

Define the operating objective and electrical boundary

Write the requirement as one sentence before choosing equipment. For example: “Support the critical bus at 2,000 kW for 30 minutes until generator transfer,” or “Keep utility import below the contracted demand limit during the tariff window.” Identify whether cooling, pumps, chillers, networking, controls and mechanical auxiliaries are on the protected bus; protecting only IT nameplate power can leave the facility unable to operate.

Objective What the battery must do Duration driver Primary sizing emphasis
Generator ride-through Carry critical loads while generators start, synchronize and accept load Actual start-and-transfer sequence, including failed-start contingencies if required High discharge power, short energy duration, transfer reliability
Graceful shutdown Keep selected systems alive long enough to shut down servers and storage safely Shutdown procedure and the slowest equipment response Energy for the procedure and controls that must remain powered
Islanded backup Operate the critical bus without utility power or dependable generation Required autonomy, fuel logistics and restoration plan Large usable kWh, recharge strategy and sustained thermal performance
Peak-demand shaving Discharge only when facility demand would exceed a grid-import limit Length of each demand interval and time between intervals Discharge kW, cumulative kWh and recharge power
Hybrid backup and shaving Reserve energy for outages while also reducing demand charges Longest credible outage after any shaving event Priority logic, minimum reserve and mutually compatible dispatch rules

Do not let a tariff objective consume the reserve needed for an outage. A hybrid controller should enforce a minimum state of charge and block discretionary discharge when weather, utility reliability or generator status makes backup more important.

Build a measured load profile

Include every load that must stay online

Separate the electrical boundary into at least these categories:

  • IT racks, storage and network equipment.
  • Cooling plant, computer-room air handlers, pumps, fans and controls.
  • Fire, security, building-management and monitoring systems.
  • UPS auxiliaries, switchgear controls and communications.
  • Discretionary or shed-able loads that should not be included in the protected-bus requirement.

Record real coincident demand rather than adding every nameplate rating. Nameplates are useful for an early conservative estimate, but they often describe maximum device input under conditions that never occur simultaneously. Measure the aggregate critical bus and, where possible, major feeders so you can see which loads rise together.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the right time resolution

Collect one-minute or finer telemetry when the battery must smooth AI or other fast ramps. Collect the utility’s 15-minute demand data for tariff calculations, because a short spike can be invisible in a coarse monthly average while still affecting the billed interval. Retain enough history to capture hot-weather cooling, maintenance configurations, seasonal schedules and the highest normal IT utilization.

Record power quality and transfer behavior

Measure true kW, kVA and power factor at the operating point. APC notes that power factor is particularly important when sizing a UPS: two loads with the same kW can require different kVA and inverter current. Also document harmonic current, voltage limits, step-load response, motor-start current and the required transfer behavior. The selected UPS or power-conversion system must meet those conditions, not merely the average kW.

For AI facilities, a static average is especially misleading. Vertiv states that “a correct sizing approach starts with a detailed understanding of the AI load profile.” Capture accelerator training and inference cycles, rack-level ramps and cooling response, then specify which percentage of fluctuation must be smoothed and for how long.

Size discharge power in kW and kVA

Backup power rating

Set Prequired to the maximum coincident demand on the critical bus, including any loads that start or transfer while the battery is already supporting the site. Check:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Steady-state critical kW and kVA at the measured power factor.
  • Step-load magnitude and rise time.
  • Motor-start or compressor inrush current.
  • UPS overload duration and bypass behavior.
  • Harmonic limits, short-circuit capability and upstream protection coordination.

If cooling is intentionally shed during an outage, document the sequence and verify that the remaining thermal capacity supports the allowed runtime. Do not subtract a load merely because it is inconvenient; subtract it only when the control system can reliably disconnect it under every relevant operating state.

Peak-shaving power rating

Choose the grid-import limit first. At each instant, the battery output needed to hold that limit is:

Pbattery(t) = max[0, Pfacility(t) − Pgrid limit]

The inverter must deliver the largest value of Pbattery(t), not the average reduction over the tariff window. Include a control margin for forecast error and response latency, then verify the PCS can sustain the output for the longest modeled interval.

Check kW versus kVA

UPS and inverter datasheets may state separate kW and kVA limits. A low power factor increases kVA for the same kW, potentially hitting the current limit first. Require the vendor’s overload curve at the actual power factor, temperature and end-of-life condition. A battery can have adequate kWh while the inverter trips because its kVA or short-duration overload rating is too low.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Calculate usable and nameplate energy

Constant-load backup

For a constant critical load, multiply measured kW by the required hours. A 30-minute requirement is 0.5 hours, not 30 kWh unless the load is exactly 60 kW. For a variable load, calculate each interval and sum the results; use the highest credible operating trace rather than a monthly mean.

Peak-shaving energy

Integrate only the portion above the grid-import limit:

Eshave = Σ max[0, Pfacility,t − Pgrid limit] × Δt

A longer peak requires more kWh even when the clipping target in kW is unchanged. Model the complete tariff window, the maximum number of events per day, recharge power, minimum reserve and the possibility of a second peak before recharge.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Convert usable energy to nameplate energy

A practical derating expression is:

Enameplate = Eusable ÷ (ηdischarge × usable-SOC fraction × aging fraction × temperature fraction) + reserve

Use the manufacturer’s certified runtime tables at the design temperature and end-of-life condition. Inverter losses, battery round-trip losses, minimum state of charge, cold or hot ambient conditions, cell imbalance and aging all reduce autonomy. Legrand specifically warns that aging and ambient temperature can shorten real autonomy and recommends a design margin. Define whether the reserve is an additive kWh margin or a separate protected state-of-charge band so it is not accidentally counted twice.

Worked example: generator-transfer requirement

Assume a measured critical load of 2,000 kW and a 30-minute transfer requirement. Assume 95% discharge efficiency, a 90% usable state-of-charge window, 80% end-of-life capacity and a 10% reserve. The ideal energy is:

2,000 kW × 0.5 h = 1,000 kWh

Applying the stated factors:

1,000 ÷ (0.95 × 0.90 × 0.80) × 1.10 ≈ 1,608 kWh nameplate

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is an illustrative calculation, not a site recommendation. The UPS or PCS still needs a 2,000 kW rating plus any specified step-load or overload capability, and the final battery count must come from the manufacturer’s certified runtime curve at the design temperature and end-of-life condition.

Choose the runtime instead of copying a “standard” number

Generator-backed UPS

Schneider Electric explains that, theoretically, a UPS needs enough battery runtime to carry the critical load until generators start and the load transfers; its 2020 design article cites 10–20 seconds as a typical interval. That figure applies to the generator-start example, not to every facility. Add time for generator sequencing, synchronization, breaker operation, failed-start policy and any required ride-through after transfer.

Graceful shutdown

Measure the slowest controlled shutdown, including storage flushes, database checkpoints, hypervisor actions and network dependencies. Controls and communications must remain powered for the entire sequence. If a shutdown can be interrupted by a utility return or generator start, define the controller’s behavior for both outcomes.

Islanded operation

Set autonomy from the mission requirement, not a generic battery label. Account for fuel delivery, generator maintenance, weather access, staffing and the amount of cooling that can operate in island mode. Longer autonomy increases energy, thermal-management, fire-protection and recharge requirements; it may be more economical to combine a shorter battery ride-through with firm generation and load shedding than to install hours of batteries.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Model peak-demand shaving as an operating schedule

Build the tariff model

  1. Import interval utility data and identify the demand-charge measurement period.
  2. Set the desired grid-import ceiling and calculate the battery output required in every interval.
  3. Apply inverter power limits, minimum state of charge and any protected outage reserve.
  4. Subtract charging load from the facility profile; charging can create a new demand peak if it is scheduled carelessly.
  5. Simulate the full day or billing period, including a second peak before recharge.

For a simple flat peak, the energy requirement is approximately the area between the facility-load curve and the import ceiling. Real sites need an optimization or dispatch simulation because the battery may have to preserve reserve, recharge between events and respond to forecast error. A kW clipping target without a duration and recharge assumption is not a battery size.

Set cycling and reserve rules

Document maximum cycles per day, minimum and maximum state of charge, allowable depth of discharge, recharge power and the conditions that suspend shaving. A battery dispatched for demand charges may be unavailable when an outage occurs unless the controller protects a reserve. Evaluate calendar aging as well as cycle aging when the battery spends long periods at high state of charge.

Choose N+1, 2N or another architecture

Redundancy is an electrical architecture decision, not a multiplier applied after the battery calculation.

Architecture Meaning Strength Trade-off
N+1 One additional module or unit beyond the minimum required capacity One module or unit can fail while the remaining units support the load Requires verified maintenance bypass and capacity sharing; the failure of a common bus can still affect all units
2N Two independent full-capacity paths, each capable of carrying the specified load Fault isolation and maintenance flexibility across separate paths More equipment, space, capital and operating complexity
Distributed or modular N+1 Multiple smaller modules with one or more spare modules Incremental growth and better matching of present load; failed modules can be isolated Requires controls, bypasses and battery strings designed for module-level operation

Eaton describes N+1 as the most common redundancy architecture, where N is the number of units or modules required to support the load. NREL cautions that a large identical redundant unit can operate at a low load factor, so compare modular arrangements at both today’s load and the forecast load. A 2N design protects against more path-level failures, but it does not remove the need to analyze common cooling, switchgear, controls and fuel dependencies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Include growth explicitly

Document rack growth, cooling expansion, power-density changes and the date by which each increment is expected. Eaton’s current UPS sizing guide gives a 15% increase over five years as an example assumption; it is not a universal allowance. If growth is uncertain, compare a larger initial system with modular additions, including the efficiency and maintenance consequences of running lightly loaded equipment.

Account for AI workload transients

AI training and inference can produce rapid, repeating power ramps as accelerators synchronize. These ramps can stress utility feeders, UPS controls and cooling systems even when the average load looks stable.

  1. Measure rack- and facility-level power at one-minute or finer resolution; use faster sampling when the electrical response requires it.
  2. Define the fluctuation percentage to smooth, such as a specified increase or decrease relative to the baseline.
  3. Define how long each fluctuation must be absorbed before the utility or generation responds.
  4. Size inverter power for the ramp’s peak and battery energy for the area under the ramp during the smoothing interval.
  5. Verify controls do not oscillate between charging and discharging when the workload changes direction.

Vertiv recommends defining both the percentage of AI-load fluctuation to smooth and the duration for which smoothing must be sustained. A design that meets only average kW can still trip on a fast ramp; a design that meets the ramp but lacks enough kWh will stop smoothing before the utility response arrives.

Compare battery technologies on delivered performance

Do not select a chemistry from nominal kWh alone. IEEE 1679-2020 recommends evaluating stationary storage by performance, service life and safety attributes. Require comparable, end-of-life data for every candidate.

Comparison axis Questions to ask
Delivered power What kW and kVA are available at end of life, design temperature and the specified state of charge?
Usable energy How many kWh are deliverable over the complete runtime at the actual load and power factor?
Recharge How long does a full or partial recharge take, and what charger or grid capacity is required?
Life What cycle life and calendar life apply to the planned temperature, depth of discharge and operating profile?
Footprint and weight Can floors, rooms, access routes and structural limits support the equipment?
Safety and code What detection, suppression, ventilation, separation and emergency-response measures are required?
Monitoring Does the battery-management system expose cell, module, thermal and state-of-charge alarms to the facility controls?
Maintenance and replacement What inspections, parts, labor, outage windows and end-of-life handling are required?
Total project life What are the installed, energy, maintenance, augmentation and replacement costs over the planned service life?

For any technology, request a runtime curve rather than a single nominal capacity. The curve should show discharge power, temperature, state-of-charge limits, efficiency and end-of-life capacity under the exact configuration being proposed.

Check safety, interconnection and permitting

Stationary energy storage is a facility and authority-having-jurisdiction issue as well as an equipment issue. NFPA lists NFPA 855 as the active standard for minimum hazard-mitigation requirements for stationary energy-storage systems, with the 2026 edition shown on its 2025/2026 standards listing. Confirm which edition and locally adopted amendments apply to the project.

IEEE 2030.2.1-2019 addresses battery-energy-storage design, operation, maintenance, integration and interoperability. IEEE 485-2020 describes methods for defining DC load and sizing lead-acid stationary batteries. Neither standard replaces local electrical and fire-code review.

Before procurement, confirm:

  • Utility interconnection studies, export limits and protection settings.
  • Local fire, electrical and building-code requirements.
  • Seismic anchorage, flood elevation and equipment-room environmental limits.
  • Ventilation, thermal runaway detection, separation distances and emergency shutdown.
  • Access for maintenance, replacement and emergency responders.
  • Communications and cybersecurity requirements for the battery-management and energy-management systems.

Have the authority having jurisdiction review the design early. A battery that fits the electrical calculation may still be unusable if the room, ventilation, separation or emergency-response plan cannot be approved.

A practical sizing workflow

  1. Write the service requirement. State the protected bus, required kW, runtime, transfer behavior, reserve and whether cooling and mechanical systems are included.
  2. Collect data. Use measured coincident kW, kVA, power factor and interval data; add high-resolution traces for transient smoothing.
  3. Separate loads. Mark critical, conditionally shed and discretionary loads, and document the controls that enforce the classification.
  4. Calculate discharge power. Use the maximum coincident demand plus step-load, motor-start and overload requirements. For shaving, use the largest instantaneous reduction needed to meet the grid limit.
  5. Calculate usable energy. Integrate the critical-load curve for backup or the above-limit area for shaving. Include every event before recharge.
  6. Apply derating. Use certified efficiency, state-of-charge, temperature and end-of-life factors, then add a clearly defined reserve.
  7. Choose architecture. Compare N+1, 2N and modular arrangements at present and forecast loads, including common-mode failures.
  8. Simulate dispatch. Test generator starts, utility returns, failed starts, tariff peaks, recharge, second events and minimum-reserve rules.
  9. Validate equipment data. Require runtime curves, overload behavior, power-factor limits, harmonics, short-circuit performance and end-of-life guarantees.
  10. Complete code and interconnection review. Resolve fire, electrical, structural, environmental and utility requirements before final equipment selection.
  11. Commission against the model. Test transfer, load steps, alarms, reserve enforcement, peak-shaving controls and restoration; update the operating model with measured results.

Common sizing mistakes and how to correct them

Mistake Why it fails Correction
Equating kW with kWh Power describes instantaneous output; energy describes duration Rate the inverter for peak kW or kVA and integrate the load for kWh
Using only IT nameplate ratings Cooling, pumps, controls and networking may be required to keep IT online Measure the complete critical bus and document shed sequences
Using a 10–20-second runtime as a universal rule That interval is a generator-transfer example, not an autonomy standard Use the actual start, transfer and contingency sequence
Converting a shaving target directly into kWh The same kW target can last minutes or hours Integrate the above-limit load and model recharge and second peaks
Ignoring end-of-life and temperature Nominal capacity may not be available when the battery is hot, cold or aged Use temperature-corrected, end-of-life manufacturer data
Adding redundancy after selecting one large unit A common bus, switchgear or control failure can defeat apparent redundancy Design independent paths and analyze common-mode dependencies
Applying an undocumented growth percentage Growth assumptions can overbuild or underbuild the system Record the forecast, date and confidence; treat Eaton’s 15% five-year example as an assumption, not a rule
Optimizing shaving without protecting backup reserve The battery may be depleted when an outage occurs Enforce a minimum state of charge and suspend discretionary dispatch when needed
Ignoring recharge demand Charging can create a new utility peak or exceed available generation Model charger power, recharge windows and generator operating limits

Decision checklist before approving the design

  • Is the critical boundary explicit, including cooling, pumps, networking and controls?
  • Are peak kW, kVA, power factor, harmonics and step-load behavior measured or conservatively justified?
  • Is runtime tied to a documented generator, shutdown, islanding or tariff objective?
  • Are usable kWh and nameplate kWh shown separately?
  • Do deratings include efficiency, usable state of charge, temperature, aging and reserve?
  • Does the peak-shaving model include the complete tariff interval, recharge and a second event?
  • Are AI ramps represented by both fluctuation magnitude and smoothing duration?
  • Does the architecture specify N+1, 2N or modular redundancy and identify common-mode failures?
  • Is growth dated and quantified rather than hidden in an arbitrary multiplier?
  • Are runtime curves and end-of-life guarantees available at the design temperature?
  • Has the authority having jurisdiction reviewed NFPA 855, local code, interconnection and emergency-response requirements?

The defensible answer to “How many kWh does this data center need?” is therefore a calculation tied to a measured load curve and an operating objective. Size the power-conversion equipment for the worst coincident and transient demand, size usable energy for the required duration, convert it to nameplate capacity with documented deratings, and validate the result against redundancy, growth, recharge and code constraints.
