The practical answer is to size AI-infrastructure exposure as one connected capital-spending trade, not as a list of unrelated tickers. Map what each holding sells, identify the hyperscalers and projects that ultimately fund its revenue, measure overlap across your direct stocks and funds, then test how the group behaves if spending slows, projects are delayed, or customers cannot bring new capacity online.
Rising investment can expand the opportunity without guaranteeing attractive returns. Position size should reflect the portfolio you already own, your loss capacity, liquidity needs and time horizon—not a universal percentage that applies to every investor.

What rising AI capital spending does—and does not—tell you
AI infrastructure spending is a chain of linked decisions. Hyperscalers commit money to servers, networking, data centers and electricity; equipment suppliers and semiconductor companies book orders; operators build or lease facilities; utilities and power developers serve new loads. A stock can benefit at one point in that chain while carrying very different operating, financing and customer risks from another stock.
J.P. Morgan Asset Management’s 2026 outlook illustrates the scale of the commitment: AI capital expenditure rose from 33% of hyperscalers’ cash flow from operations in 2023 to an estimated 93% in 2026. The 2026 figure is an estimate, not a reported result. The same analysis says investors are demanding evidence of greater final demand before rewarding additional capital expenditure. In other words, more spending is an input to potential revenue, not proof that shareholders will earn a return.

The Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence’s AI Index Report 2026 estimates annual hyperscaler capital expenditure at roughly $430 billion in 2026. Goldman Sachs discusses a forecast of more than $500 billion of AI-company investment in 2026. These figures describe different scopes and are forecasts or estimates; neither figure promises a particular supplier a given amount of sales.
Use those numbers to understand the size and intensity of the spending cycle. Use company filings and portfolio analysis to decide how much of your own capital should be exposed to it.
Map the AI infrastructure chain before choosing a position size
Start with a role map. The same company can appear in more than one category, but assigning a primary revenue mechanism prevents you from treating every beneficiary as interchangeable.

Semiconductors and accelerator supply
Chip designers, manufacturers, memory suppliers, networking-chip vendors and related semiconductor-equipment companies sell the components that make AI compute possible. Their revenue can respond quickly when customers increase orders, but that speed also creates inventory, product-cycle and pricing risk. A design win may depend on a small number of very large customers, and a change in architecture or customer specification can reduce demand for a product that recently looked essential.
Hyperscalers and platform companies
Cloud and internet platforms fund much of the buildout themselves and sell computing, storage, software and AI services to customers. Their exposure is not the same as that of a component supplier: they spend cash before utilization and pricing are proven, but they may capture recurring service revenue if demand materializes. Track both the capital outlay and the evidence that customers are using the resulting capacity.
Data-center owners, operators and landlords
Operators provide buildings, cooling, networking, security and sometimes turnkey capacity. Their economics depend on construction costs, lease terms, occupancy, power availability and the cost of financing. A facility can be technically complete yet unable to earn its expected return if the grid connection is late or a customer defers deployment.
Technology hardware and systems providers
Server makers, networking-system vendors, storage companies and integrators assemble components into deployable systems. They sit between chip demand and facility demand. Their risks include component availability, customer concentration, working-capital requirements, warranty obligations and a sudden change in the specifications of a large project.

Utilities, independent power producers, transmission developers and equipment suppliers may serve the large new loads created by AI campuses. Their revenue mechanism can be regulated rates, long-term contracts, capacity payments or project sales rather than direct hardware shipments. Permitting, fuel costs, transmission constraints, interconnection queues and the credit quality of a few large customers matter as much as the headline load forecast.

| Chain role | How revenue is generated | Questions that affect sizing |
|---|---|---|
| Semiconductors and accelerators | Component or chip sales, often tied to product cycles | How concentrated are customers? How quickly can architecture or specifications change? What happens to inventory if orders slow? |
| Hyperscalers and platforms | Cloud, software and AI-service revenue after capacity is deployed | Can service demand and pricing support the capital outlay? How much cash flow is being committed before utilization is visible? |
| Data-center operators | Leases, colocation, managed capacity or facility services | Are power, permits, financing and tenants secured? What is the exposure to delayed or cancelled projects? |
| Hardware and systems providers | Servers, networking, storage and integrated systems | How much working capital is required? Are designs standardized or customer-specific? |
| Power and grid businesses | Electricity sales, regulated returns, contracts or infrastructure projects | When will interconnection and transmission be available? Is revenue dependent on one large load? |
Build a look-through exposure map
A list of ticker symbols is not an exposure analysis. Include individual shares, mutual funds, exchange-traded funds, retirement accounts and any company you own whose earnings are materially linked to the same buildout.
- Inventory every holding. Record the security, portfolio weight, fund weight and the latest date of the holdings information. Fund portfolios change, so note whether the data is current or published with a delay.
- Assign a primary chain role. Use the categories above and add a secondary role when a company genuinely spans them. Do not classify a business as an AI beneficiary merely because it uses AI internally.
- Identify the ultimate spending customer. For each holding, ask whether revenue depends on a hyperscaler, a cloud customer, an enterprise buyer, a utility, a developer or a broad set of customers. Several holdings may rely on the same two or three purchasers even when their products differ.
- Record the project dependency. Mark whether sales require a new data center, a power connection, a specific chip design, a long-term lease or a customer financing commitment.
- Separate announced spending from realized demand. An announcement is a plan. Look for orders, installation, utilization, paid subscriptions, contracted capacity or operating cash flow that show the plan is becoming revenue.
Make the map at the fund level as well as the company level. If a broad technology fund already owns several semiconductor, cloud and hardware leaders, adding a narrowly focused AI fund may increase the same exposure rather than diversify it.
Measure concentration by common drivers, not by ticker count
Calculate the total portfolio weight assigned to each chain role, then calculate the weight exposed to each common customer or project type. A portfolio with six holdings can be more concentrated than one with two if all six require the same hyperscaler spending cycle.
Recommended Free Tools
A simple worksheet can use three columns for each holding: portfolio weight, estimated dependence on the AI buildout, and the specific spending driver. Multiplying the first two columns gives a rough AI-linked weight for that holding. This is a decision aid, not a regulated risk model; disclose your assumptions to yourself and update them when a company changes its business mix.
Next, group holdings by shared driver. For example, put all companies whose near-term orders depend on new hyperscaler campuses in one group, and put companies whose revenue comes from existing enterprise software usage in another. Add the weights within each group. The result shows how much of the portfolio could react to one change in capital-spending plans.
Look for overlap in three directions:
- Customer overlap: different suppliers may depend on the same cloud platforms.
- Project overlap: a chip vendor, server maker and data-center operator may all depend on one campus receiving power on schedule.
- Financing overlap: several operators may need debt markets to remain open at reasonable rates while construction is under way.
Do not treat a role-weight table as a forecast of returns. Its purpose is to expose the consequences of a common slowdown before you commit additional money.
Stress-test the portfolio against a slower buildout
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s 2025 registration statement for Corgi ETF Trust II identifies several reasons data-center projects may be delayed, resized or cancelled: slower AI spending, unavailable power, missing grid interconnections and changed customer specifications. Use those failure modes as explicit scenarios rather than as an afterthought.
| Scenario | What changes | Most exposed revenue mechanisms | Questions to ask |
|---|---|---|---|
| Capex growth slows | Customers still spend, but annual increases are smaller | Suppliers priced for rapid order growth; businesses with high fixed costs | Can the company remain profitable at flat or modestly growing demand? |
| Project delayed | Equipment orders, lease commencements or power availability move to a later date | Construction, hardware and facility operators | Who carries the cost of idle capacity, inventory or debt during the delay? |
| Project resized or cancelled | Customer specifications or economics change before completion | Custom systems, single-project suppliers and highly levered operators | Can assets be redeployed to another customer without a large write-down? |
| Power or interconnection unavailable | A completed site cannot receive the required electricity | Data centers, power developers and equipment staged for that site | Is there a firm connection date, an alternative site or contractual compensation? |
| Utilization disappoints | Capacity is online but customers use less than expected | Hyperscalers and operators carrying depreciation and financing costs | What utilization or pricing level is needed to cover cash costs? |
Run the scenarios holding other assumptions constant first. Then consider a second-round effect: a cancelled campus reduces orders for equipment, delays power demand and weakens the expected occupancy of an operator. Correlated effects are why a diversified-looking list can still behave like one position.

Compare revenue mechanisms and balance-sheet exposure
Two companies can benefit from the same trend while exposing you to different obligations.
Equipment seller
An equipment seller usually receives revenue when a customer accepts a product, but it may finance inventory and receivables before receiving cash. Examine backlog quality, cancellation terms, customer concentration, inventory commitments and the cost of supporting a rapidly changing product line.
Facility owner or operator
An operator commits capital to land, buildings, cooling and electrical systems and may borrow against expected leases. Examine construction schedules, debt maturities, interest sensitivity, tenant concentration, pre-leasing and the ability to repurpose space if a specification changes.

A power company may have a longer-lived asset base and a regulated or contracted revenue stream, but its growth depends on permits, transmission and interconnection. Examine contract duration, counterparty credit, regulatory treatment, fuel or generation risk and the timing of load arrival.
Hyperscaler or platform
A platform company funds infrastructure and then seeks to monetize it through cloud and AI services. Examine the relationship between capital spending, depreciation, operating cash flow, service pricing and customer adoption. High spending can be rational when demand is strong, but it can also reduce free cash flow if utilization lags.
AMD’s 2025 Form 10-K, filed February 4, 2026, highlights a constraint that applies across the chain but not equally to every company: customers may lack data-center capacity, sufficient energy or the capital needed for AI infrastructure deployments. Treat that as a prompt to identify which holding bears the constraint, which can pass it through in pricing and which simply waits for the project to proceed.
Set the position size inside the whole portfolio
There is no evidence-based universal allocation percentage for AI infrastructure stocks. The appropriate size depends on your existing technology exposure, other assets, investment horizon, need for cash, tolerance for drawdowns and ability to hold through a multiyear cycle.

- Start with a maximum thematic loss you can tolerate. Define the dollar amount or portfolio impact that would not force you to sell essential assets or abandon your plan.
- Translate that limit into a group size. Include correlated holdings and funds, not just the new stock you are considering. A small position can create a large effective bet when it duplicates existing exposure.
- Apply a single-company limit. A company with one dominant customer, one project or heavy financing needs a smaller contribution to the theme than a business with broader, recurring demand.
- Reserve capacity for uncertainty. Do not commit the entire intended exposure before you have seen evidence of orders, utilization, cash generation or reliable power delivery.
- Write rebalancing rules in advance. Specify what would cause you to trim: a breached concentration limit, a thesis-changing filing, a cancelled project, deteriorating liquidity or a valuation assumption you can no longer defend.
Position size is not a reward for being confident. It is the amount of capital you can expose while remaining able to meet near-term obligations and follow your investment plan if the cycle turns.

Use a repeatable stock-comparison checklist
When comparing several candidates, score the evidence rather than ranking them by a headline AI label.
- Customer dependence: What share of sales comes from a small number of hyperscalers, operators or projects?
- Revenue timing: Does the company get paid on shipment, installation, lease commencement, power delivery or ongoing usage?
- Demand proof: Are orders, backlog, utilization, subscriptions or operating cash flow confirming the spending thesis?
- Specification risk: Could a customer redesign the system or change performance requirements before delivery?
- Power and site risk: Does revenue depend on a permit, transmission upgrade or grid interconnection?
- Balance-sheet burden: How much capital, debt, inventory or receivables must the company carry before cash arrives?
- Alternative uses: Can equipment, facilities or electricity serve customers outside the most aggressive AI scenario?
- Portfolio overlap: Would buying the stock increase an existing customer, project or financing concentration?
The available evidence does not provide a comparable, current valuation table for a selected basket of stocks. Avoid declaring one security “cheapest” or “best” without date-stamped, like-for-like valuation data and a clearly stated methodology.
Read forecasts without confusing them with results
Label every number by source, date and status. Stanford’s 2026 report marks its 2025 and 2026 hyperscaler capital-expenditure figures as estimates. Goldman Sachs’s more-than-$500-billion figure is a 2026 forecast. J.P. Morgan Asset Management’s 93% figure is also identified as an estimate for 2026. None should be rewritten as money already spent or revenue already earned.
When updating your worksheet, record whether a figure is:
- Observed: reported in a filing or financial statement for a completed period.
- Announced: a company or customer plan that may change.
- Estimated: an analyst or institutional calculation for a period that has not ended.
- Forecast: a forward-looking projection with assumptions about demand, prices or timing.
Refresh date-sensitive figures before making a new purchase. A changed capex plan, delayed interconnection or revised customer specification can alter the exposure map even when the stock’s business description remains the same.
Common sizing mistakes and their fixes
Mistake: counting tickers as diversification
Fix: group holdings by common customers, projects and financing conditions. Add the groups, not just the names.
Mistake: treating announced capex as guaranteed sales
Fix: look for purchase orders, delivered systems, paid utilization and cash generation, and identify what happens if the project is deferred.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMistake: ignoring the power bottleneck
Fix: check the site’s interconnection, transmission and energy availability. A server order cannot produce revenue at a facility that cannot receive power.
Best Value
Mistake: applying the same risk standard to every chain role
Fix: distinguish shipment risk, construction and lease risk, regulated-utility risk and platform-utilization risk.
Mistake: using a forecast as a valuation conclusion
Fix: keep spending estimates separate from earnings, cash flow and the price you are willing to pay.
Mistake: sizing without considering liquidity
Fix: exclude money needed for near-term expenses and maintain enough liquid assets that a drawdown does not dictate an emergency sale.
An illustrative worksheet
Imagine a portfolio that already owns a broad technology fund, a semiconductor company and a data-center operator. An investor considering a fourth position should first identify the fund’s underlying holdings and estimate how much of it is already tied to the same hyperscaler customers. The semiconductor holding may depend on accelerator orders; the operator may depend on a power connection and tenant financing. A new server supplier could increase exposure to all three drivers at once.
The investor can then test three cases: capex growth slows but continues, a major campus is delayed by an interconnection problem, and utilization remains below plan after capacity is delivered. For each case, record which holdings lose orders, which face idle assets or debt service, and which retain recurring revenue. If the combined effect exceeds the investor’s written loss limit, the new position is too large regardless of how compelling the long-term AI narrative sounds.
This example is a method, not a recommended allocation or a prediction about any named company.
A practical review schedule
Review the map when a holding reports earnings, changes its customer mix, announces a major project, issues debt or updates its capital-spending plan. At each review, update four items: role, ultimate customer, project or power dependency, and evidence of cash-generating demand. Recalculate overlap after fund holdings are refreshed.
Also review the portfolio after a material external change, such as a large customer cutting its spending plan, a delayed grid connection or a change in financing conditions. The purpose is not to trade every headline; it is to detect when the assumptions behind your position size are no longer true.
Bottom line
Size AI infrastructure stocks by the cash-flow chain they depend on. Map the roles, look through funds, aggregate shared hyperscaler and project exposure, and stress-test slower spending, cancelled builds, power constraints and weak utilization. Rising capex can create substantial demand, but only realized customer usage and sustainable cash flow can validate the investment case. Your final position should fit the risk capacity and concentration limits of your entire portfolio, not a generic AI-spending percentage.
