There is no safe single-kWh answer for an AI server. Size three things separately: the UPS inverter’s kW/kVA and overload response for instantaneous power, the battery’s usable energy and recharge capability for repetitive load smoothing, and the battery energy required for outage runtime. A GPU cluster’s average wattage cannot represent millisecond peaks or determine how long the system must run during an outage.
Start with a measured or simulated time-based load trace, define whether the battery must smooth utility power, provide outage autonomy, or do both, then use the UPS manufacturer’s model-specific battery curves and engineering review. The workflow below shows what to measure, calculate and verify without pretending that one battery count fits every AI installation.

What you are actually sizing
An AI installation can ask its UPS to perform different jobs. Each job uses a different time window and places different demands on the inverter, battery and charging system.
| Design job | What must be delivered | Critical time scale | Primary sizing variables |
|---|---|---|---|
| Instantaneous power and transients | Clean output voltage while GPUs and other loads step up or down | Microseconds to seconds | UPS output kW and kVA, power factor, control response, overload curve, bypass behavior and thermal derating |
| Input-power smoothing | Battery power that limits how much the utility or generator sees as the AI load repeatedly fluctuates | Milliseconds to minutes, depending on the smoothing objective | Fluctuation percentage to filter, smoothing duration, event frequency, battery usable state-of-charge window, discharge current and recharge power |
| Outage autonomy | Energy for ride-through until a generator starts, a controlled shutdown completes or another defined endpoint is reached | Minutes to hours | Required runtime, critical load, battery discharge characteristics, efficiency, environmental conditions and permitted end-of-discharge voltage |
A larger battery cannot repair an undersized inverter. Conversely, a UPS with ample kW capacity may still have too little usable battery energy, too little recharge power or too narrow a state-of-charge window to smooth a repetitive AI workload. Treat the three jobs as separate requirements before selecting a UPS-battery combination.

Why an average AI load is not enough
Training and inference systems vary with GPU utilization, batch scheduling, memory activity, networking and synchronization between accelerators. A rack that averages 70 kW can produce short, synchronized excursions far above that value. Nameplate GPU thermal design power is not a substitute for a facility-level trace that includes servers, storage, networking, cooling auxiliaries and the way multiple racks operate together.
Vertiv’s 2025 reliability paper gives a vendor-published example attributed to its 2024 AI Roadshow: GPU peaks reached 130% to 150% of nominal load for as little as 0.4 milliseconds, followed by 100% to 125% demand for up to 50 milliseconds. Those figures are an illustrative profile, not an industry-wide prevalence statistic. The important design fact is that peaks can synchronize across GPUs, racks or rows, making the aggregate waveform different from any single server’s average.
In a separate educational article, Vertiv describes GPU workloads moving from roughly 10% idle to 100%–150% capacity within seconds or milliseconds. Again, this is a general vendor description rather than an independently measured frequency claim. Use your own measured or simulated trace to establish the magnitude, duration and repetition rate that your UPS must handle.

“A correct sizing approach starts with a detailed understanding of the AI load profile:”
Vertiv Group Corp., Importance of UPS and battery sizing with AI workloads, SL-80384 (12/25)
Step 1: Define the job and the endpoint
Write the requirement in operational terms before discussing battery cabinets. State the minimum outage runtime, the load that must remain powered and the event that ends the requirement. Examples include riding through the interval until a generator reaches stable voltage, maintaining storage and control systems while servers shut down, or keeping a selected AI partition online for a specified number of minutes.
Then state whether batteries must also smooth repetitive demand while utility power is present. Smoothing may be required to keep a generator within its ramp-rate limit, reduce utility-demand excursions or prevent frequent UPS transfers. It is not the same as outage backup: smoothing can cycle the battery many times while the utility remains available, whereas autonomy is usually a single discharge followed by recharge.

- Record the required outage duration and the critical kW and kVA during that duration.
- Define whether smoothing is mandatory, optional or required only in generator mode.
- Identify the allowed upstream ramp, generator response or demand limit if one exists.
- Decide whether both services must be available simultaneously, which can reduce the state-of-charge reserve available for an outage.
Step 2: Capture a load trace that includes transients
Measure at the UPS input or output, or simulate the planned system with the same control and scheduling behavior. Select a sampling interval fast enough to capture the shortest transient that matters to the UPS controls. A slow facility meter can show the average while completely missing a 0.4-millisecond excursion.
For every significant event, retain:
- Peak real power and apparent power, including the pre-event baseline.
- Rise and fall time, event duration and whether the waveform rings or overshoots.
- Repetition frequency, duty cycle and the longest burst of consecutive events.
- Whether several GPUs, servers, racks or rows change state at the same time.
- Power factor and harmonic behavior, because kW and kVA stress different parts of the UPS.
- Operating conditions such as inlet temperature, cooling state, workload phase and generator or utility mode.
Use planned server and GPU profiles when available, then add facility loads that will be on the same UPS. Capture separate traces for training, inference, checkpointing, maintenance and the highest-concurrency schedule. If the workload is not built yet, model a range of synchronization assumptions rather than relying on one optimistic average.
Step 3: Set the smoothing target
Define how much of each fluctuation the upstream source must not see. Vertiv refers to this percentage as FR%. For example, a target might specify that the utility or generator should receive only a chosen fraction of a load step, with the battery supplying the remainder for a stated duration. The percentage and duration must be written together; filtering a 20% fluctuation for 100 milliseconds is a different battery problem from filtering the same fluctuation for 10 minutes.
A useful control representation is:
Pbattery(t) = Pload(t) − Ptarget-input(t)
The battery energy requirement for smoothing is the time integral of battery power during the specified event window, with charging intervals included. In practice, the UPS control algorithm, efficiency, current limits and state-of-charge policy determine the usable result, so this expression is a way to describe the requirement—not a cross-vendor battery-count formula.
Recommended Free Tools
- Specify the maximum input step or ramp that the upstream equipment may see.
- Specify how long the UPS must sustain the filtered portion before the load returns or recharge catches up.
- Specify the minimum state of charge at which smoothing must remain available.
- Decide whether smoothing is needed continuously, only during generator operation or only for defined workload phases.
Step 4: Size the UPS power path independently
Check the UPS’s output rating before looking at battery kilowatt-hours. Confirm continuous output kW and kVA, supported power factor, transient response, overload time curve, ambient derating, bypass behavior and compatibility with the load’s crest factor and harmonics. The inverter must carry the instantaneous load and any permitted overload while maintaining voltage and frequency.
Schneider Electric’s general UPS buying guide says the VA rating should exceed the total device watt load and that output watt capacity should generally be 20%–25% above the attached load. This is broad purchasing guidance, not a substitute for an AI load trace, a data-center overload curve or validation of synchronized transients. Apply any headroom only after checking the specific UPS model’s continuous and short-duration ratings.
Evaluate kW and kVA separately. Watts describe real power consumed by the IT load; volt-amperes describe apparent power, with power factor relating the two. A high-kVA, lower-power-factor load can reach the UPS current limit before its kW rating is reached. Ask the manufacturer for the overload duration at the actual power factor and for the response to the measured step waveform.

A battery with more stored energy does not increase inverter kW, kVA or overload capability. If the trace exceeds the UPS’s permitted overload curve, select a larger or differently controlled UPS, distribute the load across modules, or change the upstream operating objective. Do not try to solve an inverter limitation by adding battery cabinets.

Step 5: Size battery energy for smoothing
For smoothing, calculate the energy associated with the filtered portion of the waveform over the required window, then apply the UPS and battery manufacturer’s limits. The calculation must account for discharge efficiency, conversion losses, minimum and maximum state of charge, temperature, aging allowance, maximum discharge current and the battery’s allowed depth of discharge for the expected cycle life.
Nominal battery kWh is not equal to usable AC energy. A battery may be prevented from using its top and bottom state-of-charge regions, and the UPS may reserve energy for an outage. Voltage falls during discharge, while inverter and cabling losses consume part of the stored energy. Obtain the model-specific discharge curves and approved operating window from the UPS manufacturer.
Repetitive events require an energy-balance check
For a repeating AI waveform, calculate energy discharged in each event, energy returned during the available recovery interval and the cumulative state-of-charge trend over the full workload cycle. A battery that survives one step may drift toward its minimum state of charge when hundreds of steps occur without enough recharge time.
Vertiv warns that a recharge rate unable to keep pace with repetitive discharge can reduce sustainable smoothing availability and stress the batteries. Verify maximum recharge current and power, the control system’s recharge priority, and the recovery time between events. If the workload’s average battery energy is negative over a repeating window, the UPS will eventually stop providing the requested smoothing regardless of nominal kWh.
Reserve energy when smoothing and autonomy share a battery
If the same battery must smooth load changes and then support an outage, reserve a defined state-of-charge floor for the outage requirement. Specify whether the UPS is allowed to spend that reserve during normal operation. A smoothing strategy that regularly reaches the autonomy reserve can leave no guaranteed runtime when utility power fails.
Step 6: Size battery energy for outage autonomy
Autonomy sizing starts with the critical load during the outage, not the peak transient alone. Determine the kW and kVA that remain connected, the required minutes or hours, the UPS efficiency at that load and the battery discharge curve at the expected temperature and end voltage. Include an aging margin and the manufacturer’s permitted state-of-charge window.

Use the UPS vendor’s runtime tables or sizing software for the exact UPS, battery module, cabinet, voltage and firmware combination. Those tools account for series and parallel strings, current limits, inverter efficiency and the cutoff voltage. Do not multiply a marketing kWh figure by runtime and assume the result is available at the AC output.
If the objective is generator ride-through, document generator start, transfer and stabilization times under worst-case conditions rather than using a nominal start time. If the objective is controlled shutdown, include the time needed for orchestration, storage flushes and network dependencies. The battery requirement ends at the defined operational endpoint, not automatically at a round number of minutes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsStep 7: Match chemistry, modules and cabinets to the UPS
Battery chemistry is a design variable, not a universal recommendation. The chemistry, nominal voltage, charge profile, thermal limits, monitoring interface and approved state-of-charge range must match the UPS and its battery-management system. The same nominal kWh can provide different usable power, cycle life and recharge behavior on different UPS platforms.
Confirm all of the following before ordering an enterprise UPS battery cabinet or external module:
- Approved battery chemistry and exact module or cabinet part number.
- DC voltage range, string configuration and maximum continuous and peak current.
- Battery-management communication, alarms, firmware support and remote shutdown behavior.
- Physical clearances, ventilation, fire protection, cable lengths and protection devices.
- Temperature range, altitude derating and environmental monitoring requirements.
- Service access, replacement procedure, warranty conditions and end-of-life handling.
Some enterprise UPS configurations support external battery packs, but compatibility is model-specific. A cabinet with the right kWh rating can still be unusable if its voltage, connector, management interface or approved chemistry does not match the UPS.

Validation and commissioning checklist
- Load the measured or simulated trace into the UPS manufacturer’s sizing tool or engineering model.
- Verify continuous kW and kVA, power factor, short-duration overload and transient response against the worst synchronized event.
- Verify smoothing FR%, duration and upstream ramp limits in the UPS control configuration.
- Check battery discharge current, maximum recharge current, recovery interval and state-of-charge reserve.
- Confirm runtime at the critical outage load using the approved battery cabinet and environmental conditions.
- Run a representative step and repetition test where practical, observing input power, output voltage, battery current and state of charge.
- Document alarm thresholds, bypass behavior, generator interaction and the procedure for returning from battery operation.
After commissioning, monitor battery state of charge, temperature, current, recharge time, overload events, bypass transfers and actual input smoothing. Reassess after a workload change, UPS firmware update, battery replacement, generator change or rack expansion.
Common sizing mistakes and corrections
Using average watts as the only input
Symptom: The UPS appears adequately rated on a monthly or hourly average but reports overloads during synchronized GPU activity. Correction: Capture a high-resolution trace and check peak kW, kVA, duration and repetition against the UPS overload curve.
Adding battery kWh to fix an inverter limit
Symptom: Additional cabinets are installed, yet output voltage or overload alarms persist. Correction: Reassess UPS kW, kVA, current and transient response. Battery energy cannot increase the inverter’s output rating.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Ignoring recharge equilibrium
Symptom: Smoothing works at the start of a workload but becomes unavailable after repeated bursts. Correction: Compare energy discharged with energy recovered in each cycle, verify maximum recharge power and protect the minimum state-of-charge reserve.
Confusing generator ride-through with smoothing
Symptom: The system has enough minutes for one outage but cannot keep generator input within its ramp limit during normal operation. Correction: Specify smoothing percentage and duration separately from outage runtime, then size controls, battery energy and recharge capability for both objectives.
Assuming a battery cabinet is interchangeable
Symptom: A cabinet’s nominal voltage or kWh looks correct, but the UPS rejects it or reports battery-management faults. Correction: Use only the UPS manufacturer’s approved chemistry, module, voltage and communication combination.
Decision framework for selecting a configuration
| Question | If the answer is yes | Design consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Must the battery filter repetitive load changes while utility power is present? | Yes | Define FR%, smoothing duration, event repetition and recharge equilibrium; evaluate cycle life and state-of-charge reserve. |
| Must the system ride through an outage? | Yes | Define critical load and endpoint runtime; use model-specific discharge curves and aging allowances. |
| Can several GPUs or racks synchronize? | Yes or unknown | Model the aggregate peak and verify inverter overload and transient response, not just average kW. |
| Is the upstream source a generator with ramp or loading limits? | Yes | Include the allowed input ramp in the smoothing target and test generator-mode controls. |
| Will workload, firmware or battery configuration change? | Yes | Keep a trace-and-review process and repeat sizing validation after each material change. |
What cannot be answered without site data
No cross-vendor formula or universal battery count can determine the right capacity from an AI server’s average wattage. The required result depends on the waveform, selected smoothing fraction and duration, outage runtime, inverter and battery efficiency, chemistry, usable state-of-charge limits, recharge power, environmental conditions and the exact UPS model. Obtain the final capacity, module count and cabinet arrangement from the manufacturer’s selection tools or a qualified site engineer using your trace.
The practical sequence is therefore fixed even when the final numbers are not: define the job, capture the waveform, set the smoothing target, verify inverter power capability, size usable battery energy for each objective, check recharge and compatibility, then validate under representative operation.
