Choose a portable power station only after passing two separate checks: its inverter must supply the refrigerator and every other device running at the same time, including the compressor’s brief startup surge; its battery must store enough watt-hours (Wh) for the planned outage. A station can have plenty of Wh but still fail to start a refrigerator if its inverter is undersized, or have ample watt output but run out of stored energy after a few hours.
The dependable method is therefore: identify the refrigerator’s model-specific energy use, measure or establish its startup demand, add simultaneous essential loads, and then size both output (watts) and stored energy (watt-hours) with an allowance for conversion losses and uncertainty.

What “size” means: watts versus watt-hours
Portable power stations are described with two numbers that answer different questions:

- Continuous AC output (W) is the rate of power the inverter can deliver while loads are operating. It determines whether the refrigerator, lights, router, medical equipment or other devices can run together.
- Surge or peak output (W) is a short-duration capability intended for starting motors and compressors. The rating is not a power level the station can sustain indefinitely.
- Battery capacity (Wh) is the stored-energy amount. It determines how long a given load can operate before recharging is needed.
A 1,000 Wh battery does not automatically mean 1,000 Wh reaches AC appliances. Inverter and conversion losses, the station’s reserve, battery temperature, and the refrigerator’s changing duty cycle reduce usable energy. Treat the printed Wh figure as the starting point for an estimate, not a guaranteed runtime.

Step 1: identify the refrigerator’s real energy use
Use the model number before using an internet average
Record the refrigerator’s manufacturer, model number, approximate age, capacity and whether it is a conventional compressor, an inverter-compressor model, or a compact appliance. The model number lets you find the appliance label, owner’s manual and a model-specific energy estimate. A generic “refrigerator wattage” search can be badly misleading because two units with similar volume may have very different insulation, controls and compressor behavior.
The U.S. Department of Energy’s Refrigerator and Freezer Energy Rating Search Tool allows searches by appliance type, brand, model number and year. For covered U.S. consumer models, it reports estimated consumption ranges rather than a single guaranteed value. The tool notes that not all models are included and describes coverage for models larger than 10 cubic feet. If your appliance is missing, use the manufacturer’s documentation or measure it directly.
Convert energy labels to the unit used for planning
Energy labels may show kilowatt-hours per year or another interval. Convert kilowatt-hours to watt-hours by multiplying by 1,000:
1 kWh = 1,000 Wh
For an annual estimate, divide by 365 to obtain an approximate daily figure:
daily Wh ≈ annual kWh × 1,000 ÷ 365
This is an average. A refrigerator can consume more during hot weather, after frequent door openings, during a defrost cycle or when the condenser is dirty. The estimate is useful for planning, but a measured value is better when the outage duration matters.
Measure consumption when the result must be dependable
A properly rated plug-in energy meter can record watt-hours over several days. Place it between the refrigerator and the wall outlet, leave the refrigerator operating normally, and record both accumulated energy and the highest observed power if the meter provides that reading. Do not interrupt a refrigerator’s normal cycle just to obtain a quick reading; a short observation can miss defrost and compressor events. Use the station’s own display as a second check once the refrigerator is connected, recognizing that the station display may show AC input or output with its own measurement tolerance.
Step 2: account for compressor startup
Running watts are not the whole story
A compressor refrigerator cycles on and off. Its steady running draw may look modest, while the motor can demand a substantially higher, brief current when starting. The inverter must cover that event while any other loads are already operating.

A U.S. Department of Energy-hosted refrigeration research paper from 2018 describes startup and defrost behavior and reports one example in which startup power was 35% higher than steady-state power consumption. That is an observation from the cited example, not a universal multiplier for every refrigerator. Compressor design, refrigerant system, temperature and control electronics all affect the result.
Find a credible startup figure
- Check the refrigerator’s installation manual or electrical label for locked-rotor, starting or maximum-current information.
- Ask the manufacturer for starting requirements when the label does not state them.
- Use a meter designed and rated to capture inrush current or peak watts. Ordinary plug meters often show only an averaged or delayed value.
- If you cannot establish a startup number, choose a station with a clearly specified surge capability above the best available estimate and avoid running other high-power loads during the start.
Compare the measured or documented startup requirement with the station’s surge rating and its stated surge duration, if provided. A high surge number with no duration specification should not be treated as a continuous output rating.
Step 3: list every device that may run at the same time
Write down the devices you genuinely need during an outage, not every appliance in the house. Include their running watts, expected hours per day and any motor or heating startup event. Examples include a router, phone chargers, LED lamps, a medical device, a television, a fan and a laptop.
| Load | Information needed for output sizing | Information needed for energy sizing |
|---|---|---|
| Refrigerator | Running watts plus compressor startup watts | Wh per day or measured duty-cycle energy |
| Router or modem | Normal watts (usually continuous) | Watts × hours connected each day |
| Lighting | Watts of lamps used together | Total lamp watts × hours per day |
| Medical or communications equipment | Running and startup requirements from its label | Manufacturer energy specification or measured Wh |
| Heating, cooking or large tools | Usually the dominant continuous and startup load | Watts × actual run time; account for heating cycles |
Add the watts of all devices that can be on simultaneously. That sum is the minimum continuous AC output target:

If you can schedule a load so it is off during compressor startup, document that operating rule rather than quietly assuming it will always be followed.
Step 4: calculate the battery energy for the desired duration
Start with daily refrigerator energy
When the refrigerator’s consumption is available in Wh per day, multiply it by the number of outage days:
refrigerator energy = refrigerator Wh/day × intended days
For a kWh-per-year label, first convert it to an average daily Wh figure as shown above. If you have a multi-day meter reading, divide accumulated Wh by the number of days and use that measured average instead.
Add essential devices
For each device, calculate:
device Wh = device watts × hours of operation per day × intended days
Add the refrigerator and all devices:
base required Wh = refrigerator Wh + other-device Wh
Finally, add a practical allowance for inverter losses, reserve and changing conditions. The correct allowance depends on the station, battery condition and load profile; no single percentage is valid for every model. A station’s own display during an actual test is the best way to refine the estimate. If the result is close to the station’s rated capacity, move to the next capacity class rather than planning to exhaust the battery.

Why runtime is not simply capacity divided by refrigerator watts
A refrigerator is not a constant 120 W load. Its compressor cycles, defrost heater may operate intermittently, and controls continue to consume some power while the compressor is off. Ambient temperature and door openings alter the duty cycle. Dividing a battery’s Wh by one instantaneous watt reading therefore overstates precision. Use measured Wh over a representative period or the refrigerator’s model estimate, then include an allowance.
Worked sizing examples (illustrative calculations)
Example A: refrigerator only for one day
Assume a model-specific estimate or meter reading of 1.2 kWh per day. That is 1,200 Wh per day. The energy calculation begins at 1,200 Wh for a one-day outage. The station still needs enough continuous output for the refrigerator’s running draw and enough surge output for its compressor startup. Because the startup figure is not established in this illustration, the result is not a recommendation for a particular station; it shows why both checks are required.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Example B: refrigerator plus communications and lighting
Assume the same 1,200 Wh refrigerator estimate, a 10 W router operating 24 hours per day, and two 8 W lamps used together for five hours per day. Router energy is 240 Wh per day; lighting energy is 80 Wh per day. The base daily total is therefore 1,520 Wh before losses and reserve. For a two-day outage, the base becomes 3,040 Wh. The station must also supply at least the refrigerator’s running watts plus the 10 W router and 16 W of lamps whenever all three are operating, and it must cover the compressor startup with those loads still connected.
Example C: why a heater changes the decision
A resistive heater can draw hundreds or thousands of watts continuously. Even if it runs for only a short period, it can exceed a station’s continuous AC rating and consume a large share of the battery. Recalculate the simultaneous output and Wh totals with the heater included; do not assume that a station selected for a refrigerator can also support space heating, kettles or hot plates.
How to compare portable power stations
Once your two calculations are complete, compare stations using the same specifications and the same load scenario. The following fields matter:
| Specification | Why it matters | Questions to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Rated capacity (Wh) | Sets the stored-energy budget | Is the figure nominal, and does the maker state usable AC energy? |
| Continuous AC output (W) | Limits simultaneous running loads | Is the rating continuous under the stated temperature and outlet conditions? |
| Surge output (W) | Supports compressor startup | How long is the surge available, and is the value specified for AC output? |
| Recharge input | Determines how quickly the station can recover | What are the maximum input watts, voltage and current? |
| Solar compatibility | May extend an outage without grid power | What panel voltage range, connector and maximum solar watts are accepted? |
| Ports and simultaneous outputs | Determines how many essential devices can be connected | Can AC, USB and DC outputs operate together as needed? |
| Battery chemistry, warranty, size and weight | Affects service life and portability | What does the manufacturer specify for cycles, warranty and transport? |
Do not rank products from capacity alone. A larger battery with a low inverter rating may fail at startup, while a powerful inverter paired with a small battery may stop well before the outage ends.

As an illustration of the comparison process, the U.S. product page for the EcoFlow DELTA 2 lists 1 kWh-class storage and 1,800 W output. Its store specification lists 1,024 Wh capacity, 1,800 W total AC output, 2,700 W surge and up to 500 W solar input. A separate manufacturer runtime illustration uses a 120 W refrigerator and estimates 7–14 hours.

Those figures demonstrate the fields to compare—capacity, continuous output, surge and recharge input—but they do not establish that the unit will run every refrigerator for that duration. The illustration is a manufacturer estimate tied to a stated load and operating conditions; actual runtime changes with compressor cycling, ambient temperature, other connected devices and conversion losses. Product specifications can change, so verify the current model page and manual before purchase.
Plan for a long outage and recharging
Solar is an extension, not a substitute for sizing
Solar input can extend operation only when the station accepts the panel’s electrical characteristics and sunlight provides useful generation. Check the exact station’s maximum solar watts, voltage and current range, connector and charging rules. A panel rated at a certain wattage will not necessarily deliver that wattage in every season or weather condition. Keep enough battery capacity to cover periods of shade, clouds and nighttime.
Use a recharge schedule
Estimate daily energy use and compare it with the energy you expect to harvest or obtain from the grid. If recharge input cannot replace the previous day’s consumption, the battery will gradually deplete even if the panel is connected continuously. Disconnect nonessential loads, charge phones and laptops during the best solar window, and reserve the battery for the refrigerator and genuinely essential equipment.
Step-by-step sizing checklist
- Write down the refrigerator model number, capacity, age and compressor type.
- Find its model-specific annual or daily energy estimate in the manufacturer documentation or the U.S. Department of Energy lookup tool. Note whether the model is covered.
- Convert the estimate to Wh per day, or measure Wh over several representative days with a suitably rated energy meter.
- Obtain a credible running-watt and startup or inrush figure. Do not replace an unknown startup value with a universal multiplier.
- List every essential device and its simultaneous running watts, hours per day and any startup requirement.
- Add simultaneous running watts and select a station whose continuous AC rating exceeds that total.
- Check that the station’s surge rating covers the refrigerator’s startup while other required loads are on.
- Calculate refrigerator Wh plus other-device Wh for the intended number of days.
- Add an allowance for conversion losses, reserve and changing refrigerator conditions; move up a capacity class if the estimate is close to the rated Wh.
- For longer outages, verify solar or grid recharge limits and make a schedule that preserves battery reserve.
- After installation, observe the station’s output and remaining Wh during a normal refrigerator cycle and update your estimate.
Common failure modes and fixes
The station shuts down when the refrigerator starts
The inverter may be below the compressor’s startup demand, the surge may last longer than the station allows, or another load may be starting simultaneously. Turn off nonessential loads, verify the station is in its normal AC-output mode, and compare measured inrush with the manufacturer’s surge specification. If the startup requirement still exceeds the rating, use a station with a higher surge capability rather than relying on repeated restart attempts.
The displayed runtime is much shorter than expected
Check whether the estimate used an instantaneous watt reading instead of measured daily Wh, omitted other devices, or ignored conversion losses. Hot weather, frequent door openings, a failing door seal, a dirty condenser or an active defrost cycle can raise consumption. Measure over a longer period and recalculate from accumulated Wh.
The battery has enough Wh but not enough output
Capacity and inverter output are independent. A large Wh figure cannot compensate for an AC inverter that is undersized for simultaneous running or startup watts. Recheck the continuous and surge calculations separately.
Solar charging is intermittent or unavailable
Confirm panel voltage, current, connector and polarity against the station manual. Shade, low sun angle and temperature reduce generation. Stay within the station’s stated solar-input limits; exceeding them can damage equipment or void support.

The practical decision
There is no honest universal answer such as “500 Wh,” “1,000 Wh” or “2,000 Wh” for every refrigerator. The correct station is the smallest model that clears your measured or documented simultaneous running watts and compressor startup requirement, then provides enough usable energy—after losses and reserve—for the refrigerator and essential devices over the number of days you specify. Model-specific consumption data, a real startup check and a complete essential-load list turn a guess into a defensible size.
