The right home battery size is the amount of usable energy (kWh) your selected appliances need for the planned outage, combined with enough continuous power (kW) to run loads at the same time and enough surge capacity to start motors. There is no universal “essential appliances” battery size. A refrigerator-only plan for six hours is a very different design from a two-day plan that includes a well pump, heating, or air conditioning.

Use the method below: define the circuits you will keep on, estimate their outage-period energy, multiply for the required duration, then check simultaneous running watts, motor-starting current, solar-recharge assumptions, and installation limits. The result is a defensible target to take to a qualified installer.

Start with the three checks that determine battery size

1. Energy over time: kWh

Energy is the amount of electricity consumed during the outage. For each appliance, estimate its use over the target period and add the results:

Required energy (kWh) ≈ sum of each essential appliance’s outage-period energy use.

If a device draws a steady, known load, multiply watts by hours and divide by 1,000. A 100-watt device operating for 10 hours uses 1,000 watt-hours, or 1 kWh. Cycling equipment does not behave that simply: a refrigerator compressor turns on and off, so its daily consumption can be much lower than its running wattage multiplied by 24 hours. Prefer measured data or manufacturer usage figures when available.

2. Simultaneous output: kW

Power is the rate at which electricity must be delivered at a particular moment. List the appliances that could operate together and add their running demand. A battery can have enough stored kWh for a day yet still trip if its inverter cannot supply the combined kW of a refrigerator, pump, lights, and other loads running at once.

3. Starting surge and compatibility

Compressors and pumps briefly draw more power when they start than they use while running. Check documented starting requirements for the refrigerator, freezer, well pump, air-conditioner compressor, furnace blower, or other motor loads against the specific battery-and-inverter system. Circuit voltage, panel configuration, transfer equipment, and local electrical code also affect what can be backed up. Tesla’s Powershare documentation warns that motor inrush can overload that configuration and calls for a home load calculation and code-compliant installation; its thresholds should not be generalized to other systems.

Build an essential-load list before choosing a battery

Begin with a deliberate list rather than your entire utility bill. The list becomes the boundary for both the energy calculation and the circuits an installer places behind the backup equipment.

Common priority loads

  • Refrigerator and, if needed, a separate freezer.
  • Selected lighting circuits.
  • Internet modem, router, and networking equipment.
  • Phone, laptop, and medical-device charging.
  • Required medical equipment.
  • A well pump when the home depends on private water service.

Loads that change the design substantially

  • Central air conditioning, heat pumps, or electric resistance heating.
  • Electric ranges, ovens, and induction cooktops.
  • Electric water heaters.
  • Laundry equipment and dishwashers.
  • Pool or spa pumps.
  • Electric-vehicle charging.

Mark each item as “must run,” “use only occasionally,” or “leave off.” An outage plan that allows a short cooking session has a different energy profile from one that keeps an electric range available all day. If you want whole-home backup, say so explicitly; otherwise, partial-home backup with selected circuits is usually the calculation being performed.

Estimate appliance energy with the best data available

Use measured or appliance-specific information first

Recent plug-in meter readings, smart-panel data, and manufacturer energy figures are more useful than a nameplate wattage alone for cycling appliances. Record energy over a representative day or week, note the season, and convert the result to the outage period you are planning. For a refrigerator, for example, a measurement that captures compressor cycling is preferable to assuming its listed running watts continue all day.

Use ratings when no consumption data exists

For a steady load, use:

kWh = (watts × hours of operation) ÷ 1,000.

For a device that operates intermittently, estimate its duty cycle or use a conservative measured average. Keep the operating schedule beside every number so another person can reproduce the calculation.

Illustrative appliance figures

Tesla’s home-battery sizing guide, published August 6, 2025, gives examples rather than guarantees for every home. Its illustrative daily values include the following:

Load Illustrative energy How to interpret it
Refrigerator 1.9 kWh/day Example daily figure; model, temperature, and cycling change actual use.
Wi-Fi equipment 0.5 kWh/day Assumes continuous networking equipment operation in the guide’s example.
70 W of lighting 0.8 kWh/day Based on 12 hours of use in the guide’s illustration.
Cooking range 1.4 kWh/day Example cooking schedule, not a rating for every range.
1 hp well pump 2 kWh/day Based on two hours of use in the guide’s illustration; starting demand still needs a separate check.

The guide describes a critical-load set totaling approximately 4–6 kWh per day. Treat that range as an example of a load schedule, not as the consumption of an average household or a promise of runtime from a particular battery.

Convert daily use into an outage target

Multiply the essential-load energy per day by the number of days without recharge. A six-hour target is one quarter of a day; a two-day target is two daily totals.

Planned outage Example daily essential load Energy target before system allowance
6 hours 5 kWh/day About 1.25 kWh
24 hours 5 kWh/day 5 kWh
48 hours 5 kWh/day 10 kWh

These figures describe the loads and schedules shown, not guaranteed delivered AC energy. A real design must account for the battery’s usable-energy specification, inverter conversion, reserve settings, temperature, aging, and any energy the system withholds for protection or emergency reserve. Ask for usable AC energy, not only the nameplate capacity.

Tesla’s two-day illustration

Tesla pairs a 5 kWh-per-day critical-load example with two days of autonomy and presents a 13.5 kWh Powerwall 3 rated at 11.5 kW as a worked illustration. That is a vendor example, not a universal formula: a 13.5 kWh rating does not mean every home receives a fixed runtime or that every 10 kWh-rated product supplies exactly 10 kWh of usable AC energy.

Decide whether solar recharge is part of the plan

Size a no-recharge case first. It is the clearest answer for a storm in which panels produce little or no energy. Then create a separate solar-recharge scenario rather than subtracting an optimistic daily solar number from the battery target.

Solar output varies with location, season, roof orientation, shading, snow, and cloud cover. Tesla cautions that storms or snow can mean minimal production. The array must also be configured to operate while the grid is down; some systems shut solar off unless the battery and backup controls form an approved islanded system. Confirm the array’s outage behavior, expected winter production, and whether charging loads compete with household loads.

Check simultaneous running power and motor surge

Make a running-load schedule

Write down combinations that could occur, not just the largest individual appliance. For example, a refrigerator may run while lights, networking equipment, a furnace blower, and a well pump are energized. Add their running watts and compare the total with the inverter’s continuous AC output. Repeat the exercise for cooking, cooling, or water-pumping scenarios you intend to permit.

Identify starting events

Compressors and pumps can demand a short inrush several times higher than their running draw. Obtain locked-rotor, starting-watt, or manufacturer startup information where available. Ask the installer how the proposed inverter handles that surge and whether controls can stagger starts. A system that passes the energy calculation can still fail when two motors start together.

Do not transfer limits between products

Published thresholds for Tesla’s Powershare configuration apply to that equipment, wiring, and installation method. They are not a general limit for every residential battery. The same caution applies to claims about whole-home operation: verify the exact inverter, gateway or switch, service rating, and backed-up circuits.

Use household data without confusing it with outage use

Your utility bill can establish a baseline, but it does not answer the essential-load question by itself. Divide billed kWh by the number of days in the billing period to obtain average daily purchases, then remove loads that will be switched off during an outage. Heating, cooling, cooking, water heating, and vehicle charging can dominate a monthly total while being absent from an emergency plan.

For context, the U.S. Energy Information Administration reports 10,791 kWh purchased per residential electric-utility customer in 2022, about 899 kWh per month. EIA notes that on-site solar can make purchased electricity differ from total household consumption. Tesla’s 2025 guide separately cites approximately 10,500 kWh in 2023, or about 29 kWh per day, as an EIA figure. These are national or broadly reported consumption measures, not a sizing answer for your selected outage circuits.

Account for climate, building efficiency, and electrification

Weather and the building envelope can alter both energy and power requirements. Better insulation, air sealing, efficient appliances, and load-shifting controls reduce the storage needed for a given interruption or extend the conditions a system can cover.

A November 2023 Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory study modeled statistically representative building stock in ten U.S. locations. It found that efficiency measures and load flexibility can reduce storage needs or extend backup coverage. The study also reports that heat pumps in cold-weather climates can challenge solar-plus-storage backup because of the storage required, although they perform better than electric-resistance heating in that comparison. These are modeled scenario findings, not a personalized calculation; use your home’s insulation, heating fuel, climate, and thermostat plan for the actual design.

Compare battery systems on more than kWh

Comparison axis Question to ask
Usable stored energy How many AC kWh are available after reserve and conversion limits?
Continuous output Can the inverter run the loads that may overlap?
Motor-starting capability Can it start the documented compressor or pump surge?
Backup scope Is the design partial-home or whole-home, and which circuits are included?
Solar operation Can the array recharge during an outage, including poor-weather conditions?
Electrical compatibility Does the equipment match service voltage, panel capacity, transfer hardware, utility approval, and local code?

Tesla describes both partial-home and whole-home approaches and says climate, home orientation, and energy-use goals make detailed design household-specific. Its documentation recommends a Tesla advisor or certified installer for a final design; treat that as manufacturer guidance and obtain comparable proposals from qualified local installers.

Manufacturer-specific example

Tesla identifies Powerwall 3 as an example with 13.5 kWh of storage and 11.5 kW of power. It also describes a 13.5 kWh expansion unit that shares power from a lead unit. Tesla support documentation says outage operation uses a battery with a Backup Gateway or Backup Switch, with configuration depending on the system model, solar equipment, and site. Verify current specifications and compatibility before signing a design; these figures describe one manufacturer’s system, not the residential battery category as a whole.

Plan the electrical installation

  1. Inventory the service and panel. Record service voltage, main-breaker rating, panel space, subpanels, and the circuits you want protected.
  2. Document each load. Gather nameplate ratings, measured energy, motor-start information, and the schedule used in your kWh estimate.
  3. Choose partial-home or whole-home backup. A partial-home design may place only essential circuits behind a backup panel; whole-home operation must satisfy the service and inverter limits.
  4. Verify solar and transfer equipment. Confirm whether the array can operate during an outage and identify the required gateway, switch, disconnects, and utility permissions.
  5. Have a qualified professional perform the load calculation. Installation must follow local electrical code, equipment instructions, fire-clearance rules, and utility requirements.
  6. Test the intended operating plan. After commissioning, confirm that the refrigerator, pump, communications equipment, and other priority circuits start without overload and that nonessential loads remain controlled.

Common sizing mistakes and corrections

Choosing a battery from annual household kWh

Why it fails: Annual purchases average every appliance and season together, while an outage plan uses a selected subset for a defined period.

Correction: Build the circuit list and calculate its outage-period energy separately.

Multiplying refrigerator watts by 24 hours

Why it fails: The compressor cycles, so running watts are not the same as daily energy.

Correction: Use a measured daily reading or appliance-specific consumption estimate.

Buying for kWh while ignoring kW

Why it fails: Several loads can exceed inverter output even when the stored energy is ample.

Correction: Add simultaneous running demand and evaluate startup surges.

Counting solar as guaranteed recharge

Why it fails: Storm clouds, snow, shading, and an incompatible outage configuration can reduce generation to little or nothing.

Correction: Size a no-recharge case, then model a conservative solar scenario with verified islanding capability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming a product rating equals delivered runtime

Why it fails: Nameplate storage does not disclose every reserve, conversion, temperature, aging, or load effect.

Correction: Request usable AC energy, continuous output, surge capability, and the exact backed-up circuits in writing.

A worksheet you can complete before requesting quotes

Appliance or circuit Daily or outage-period kWh Running watts Starting requirement Schedule or notes
Refrigerator Measured cycling data preferred
Freezer Include only if required
Lighting Usually none List wattage and hours
Internet equipment Usually none Continuous or scheduled
Medical equipment Check manufacturer data Account for required duty cycle
Well pump or HVAC Obtain motor-start data Check overlap with other motors

Add the kWh column for the selected outage period, then compare the largest plausible simultaneous running total and startup event with the proposed system. Keep the duration, weather assumption, and solar-recharge assumption beside the worksheet so a quote does not silently change the scenario.

What outage statistics can—and cannot—tell you

EIA reports that U.S. electricity customers averaged approximately 5.5 hours of interruptions in 2022, including major events. That national average is context, not a prediction for your home or a guarantee about future storms. A battery sized for six hours may cover a typical short interruption but not a multi-day event; your target should reflect local outage history, critical medical needs, weather exposure, and your tolerance for leaving nonessential loads off.
