How to Size a Battery Energy Storage System for a Data Center

There is no universal “kWh per kW” rule for a data center battery. The correct size follows from the job the battery must perform, the loads it protects, the required failure case, the battery and UPS discharge curves, and how the system will recharge. Start by separating a battery-backed uninterruptible power supply (UPS) from a behind-the-meter (BTM) battery energy storage system (BESS): they can work together, but they are not interchangeable.

Use the workflow below to define the duty, measure the real load, calculate power and delivered energy, apply manufacturer limits and end-of-life allowances, test the redundancy scenario, and validate the design with the UPS and BESS suppliers before ordering equipment.

First decide which battery system you are sizing

“Data center battery” can describe two different electrical systems. A UPS battery is part of a power-protection chain that keeps a critical load energized and conditioned when the utility input fails or a generator is transferring. A BTM BESS is normally connected in parallel at the site level and is dispatched for energy management, peak shaving, demand response, renewable-energy shifting, power balancing, or longer-duration reserve.

Design question UPS battery system Behind-the-meter BESS
Primary role Conditioned no-break supply for critical loads Site energy management, flexibility, peak shaving, grid services, or longer-duration reserve
Typical architecture UPS in series with the protected load Parallel, site-level connection
Main sizing focus Critical-load power, power conditioning, transfer or ride-through duration, and redundancy Power and energy duration, dispatch duty, controls, interconnection, and site economics
How the systems can interact Provides immediate protection and can bridge to generation Can provide longer reserve or energy flexibility when coordinated with the UPS and controls
Deployment evidence Product runtime and topology vary by UPS design Uptime Institute’s June 2026 briefing describes use beyond UPS and 2- to 4-hour renewable shifting as largely pilot or early-stage in its reviewed data-center context

DOE defines a UPS as converters, switches, and energy-storage devices that maintain load continuity when the input fails. That definition matters: the UPS battery is sized around the protected electrical path and the time needed to ride through an interruption, transfer to generation, or shut down equipment safely. A BTM BESS may have a very different duty cycle and may not provide the UPS’s conditioning, transfer behavior, bypass arrangements, or fault protection.

Write the duty in one sentence before selecting a battery. Examples include “support the critical UPS load until generators stabilize,” “provide 30 minutes of critical-load backup,” “reduce a monthly demand peak,” “shift solar energy into the evening,” or “smooth fast AI/GPU load swings.” Each statement produces a different architecture and calculation.

Step 1: Define the duty and operating boundaries

UPS ride-through or generator transfer

For a short interruption, identify the longest credible time from input failure to stable alternate generation, plus any required ride-through or controlled-shutdown interval. Include the power-conditioning mode, transfer sequence, bypass behavior, and the single failure the UPS must tolerate. A battery that covers the average load for the nominal transfer time can still fail if the UPS is operating at a higher instantaneous load, at an unfavorable temperature, or near its end-of-life capacity.

Longer critical-load backup

If the battery must carry the site for tens of minutes or hours, define exactly which loads remain energized. “The data center load” may include IT racks, cooling, pumps, fans, network equipment, controls, lighting, security, fire systems, and building services. The protected boundary could be only selected IT rooms or the full critical distribution. The boundary determines both power and energy; changing it after the calculation invalidates the result.

BTM energy management

Peak shaving and demand response require a dispatch schedule, a maximum import or export limit, and enough energy to perform the event without violating a reserve state of charge (SOC). Renewable shifting requires the expected generation profile, charging windows, discharge window, and any export or interconnection limits. These duties are usually evaluated over repeated cycles, so recharge energy and battery degradation matter as much as the first discharge.

AI and GPU load smoothing

Fast workload changes require a time-series profile rather than a single peak or average. Record fluctuation amplitude, repetition frequency, duty cycle, the percentage of fluctuation to smooth, and the duration for which smoothing must continue. The battery and power converter must supply the instantaneous change, while the charger must restore SOC quickly enough that repeated cycles do not progressively reduce available energy.

Step 2: Establish the load and electrical boundary

Build a load register for the exact electrical path between the source and the battery-backed or BESS-backed equipment. DOE’s data-center electrical path includes utility service, switchgear, alternate generation, parallel or redundant UPS systems, PDUs, and auxiliary conditioning equipment. DOE also advises considering both initial and future loads, especially part-load and low-load operation.

Collect these values for each protected or dispatched load

  • Measured or defensible design real power in kW.
  • Apparent power in kVA and the operating power factor.
  • Steady-state demand, startup demand, load steps, and any overload duration.
  • Whether cooling, network, controls, pumps, fans, and other auxiliaries remain powered during the event.
  • The present load profile and a dated growth schedule for future racks, servers, or accelerators.
  • The upstream and downstream switchgear, UPS modules, transformers, PDUs, and power paths through which the battery energy will flow.
  • Minimum and maximum operating temperatures at the battery, UPS, and power-conversion equipment.

Do not substitute facility-wide average demand for the critical load. A data center can have a large building load while only a defined portion is on the UPS, or it can require cooling and controls to remain online for the IT load to survive. Use interval measurements where possible, and preserve the time resolution needed to see AI workload steps and generator-transfer events.

Step 3: Size instantaneous power before energy

Power capacity is the rate at which the system must deliver or absorb energy. It is expressed in kW for real power and kVA for apparent power. The converter, UPS modules, switchgear, cables, breakers, and battery must all support the required value.

For a first check, calculate apparent power from real power and power factor:

kVA = kW ÷ power factor

Then test the highest coincident critical load, not the sum of nameplates that will never operate together. Include known load steps, inverter response requirements, motor starts, short-duration overloads, and the power needed to recharge after a discharge. A battery can have enough kWh yet fail because its inverter cannot provide the required kW or kVA at the demanded ramp rate.

Do not add a generic “20% battery margin” or another fixed multiplier without identifying what it covers. Growth, redundancy, temperature, aging, discharge-rate effects, and engineering reserve are separate issues and should be documented separately. The UPS manufacturer’s overload and current limits, the battery discharge curve, and the project one-line diagram determine the valid power rating.

Step 4: Convert the required duration into installed energy

A screening calculation for delivered energy is:

Delivered energy (kWh) ≈ critical load (kW) × required support time (hours)

For example, a 500 kW critical load supported for 30 minutes requires approximately 250 kWh delivered to the load before any losses or reserves are considered. That is not the battery nameplate size.

The installed energy must be established from the selected UPS and battery manufacturer’s data. The design must account for:

  • UPS and power-conversion efficiency at the actual load point.
  • Battery discharge-rate effects and the manufacturer’s voltage or power curve.
  • The usable SOC window or depth of discharge permitted by the battery-management system.
  • Temperature derating at the lowest and highest expected operating temperatures.
  • End-of-life capacity, rather than only the capacity of a new battery.
  • Required engineering reserve and any energy held back for control or emergency functions.
  • Energy used by cooling, controls, pumps, and other equipment that remains on the battery path.

A conceptual relationship is:

Installed energy = required delivered energy ÷ (conversion efficiency × usable SOC fraction × temperature allowance × end-of-life allowance)

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The terms in that expression are not universal percentages. Obtain the actual values and discharge curves for the chosen model, voltage, rack or cabinet configuration, and operating temperature. DOE’s UPS purchasing guidance treats outage runtime as a selection factor, while Vertiv’s technical guidance emphasizes SOC bounds and the balance between charging and discharging. Neither supports one standard autonomy ratio for all data centers.

Efficiency also changes with loading. DOE/FEMP reported that double-conversion UPS efficiency reached 95% or higher in 2023 in its 2024 guide, but that figure is an efficiency context, not a battery-sizing derating to apply to every UPS or operating point.

Step 5: Calculate the actual redundancy and failure case

State the topology explicitly: N, N+1, 2N, distributed redundant, or another arrangement. Then identify the failure the design must survive. Examples include loss of one UPS module, loss of one battery string, loss of one power path, maintenance bypass operation, or a generator that does not start.

For the selected failure case, determine:

  1. Which UPS modules and power paths remain available.
  2. How much critical load is transferred to each surviving path.
  3. Whether the remaining converters can meet kW, kVA, overload, and recharge requirements.
  4. How much usable battery energy remains after the failure and any preceding event.
  5. Whether controls can prevent an overload while maintaining the required protected loads.

Redundancy is not a fixed percentage. An N+1 modular UPS may lose one module and carry the load on the remainder; a 2N design may require one entire power path to carry the critical load; a BTM BESS may have a different module and inverter failure strategy. Size the conversion equipment and energy storage against the stated scenario, including future load growth.

Step 6: Add AI-load smoothing and recharge calculations

AI training and inference can create rapid, repeated changes that are invisible in an hourly average. Use measured or simulated high-resolution data and document four characteristics:

  • Amplitude: the kW or kVA swing the battery must absorb or supply.
  • Frequency: how often the swing repeats.
  • Duty cycle: the fraction of each cycle spent at the high or low level.
  • Smoothing target and duration: the percentage of fluctuation to remove and how long the target must be maintained.

Reserve a minimum SOC so the battery can respond to the next event. Then check the energy balance over repeated cycles: charging must restore at least the energy consumed by the discharge pattern, after conversion losses, or the available SOC will decline until smoothing stops. Vertiv states that an inadequate recharge rate can limit input-power smoothing and that battery stress can accelerate aging.

Vertiv’s 2025 illustration uses a 1,200 kW workload that moves from 30% to 100% at 0.5 Hz with a 50% duty cycle. It compares seven and 14 lithium-ion battery cabinets:

Illustrative configuration Published result for Vertiv’s stated profile How to use the figure
7 lithium-ion cabinets Limited smoothing duration under the simulation assumptions Vendor-specific example, not a cabinet count for another site
14 lithium-ion cabinets Reaches neutral power balance for the same stated profile in the example Shows why energy and recharge must be modeled together

The cabinet counts cannot be generalized to another UPS, battery model, temperature, SOC window, or AI workload. Request a simulation using your measured waveform and specify the minimum SOC, maximum SOC, smoothing percentage, response time, and recharge limit.

Step 7: Compare battery technologies against the duty

Technology selection should cover duration, response, usable power and energy, safety, thermal behavior, lifecycle cost, maintainability, warranty, maturity, and supply chain. A technology that looks attractive for a multi-hour energy-shifting application may not be appropriate for a compact UPS room, and a fast-response UPS battery may not be economical for daily peak shaving.

Technology category Evidence-backed deployment context Questions for the project
Lithium-ion Uptime Institute’s June 2026 review describes lithium-ion as the only widely deployed commercial-scale option in its data-center context Confirm chemistry, thermal management, fire protection, usable SOC window, warranty throughput, replacement plan, and supply availability
Sodium-ion Discussed as an emerging option with maturity, economics, or manufacturing constraints in some applications Verify commercial availability, qualification history, energy density, operating limits, service support, and bankability
Flow batteries Discussed for longer-duration use but not broadly mature at commercial data-center scale in the reviewed briefing Check power-to-energy sizing, footprint, pumps and auxiliaries, temperature limits, maintenance, and vendor support
Other emerging long-duration chemistries Uptime Institute characterizes many applications beyond UPS and 2- to 4-hour renewable shifting as pilot or early-stage Require evidence of field operation, safety approvals, financing acceptability, replacement logistics, and a service plan

This is a time-bound industry assessment, not a universal technology rule. The chemistry decision remains project-specific and should be tied to the duty cycle and jurisdictional safety requirements.

Step 8: Design the BTM BESS controls and interconnection

A BTM BESS that operates in parallel with the facility must coordinate with utility protection, site generators, UPS controls, and the energy-management system. Define import and export limits, islanding behavior, black-start expectations if applicable, power-quality limits, and the priority order when peak shaving conflicts with backup reserve.

For each dispatch function, specify:

  • Maximum charge and discharge kW.
  • Usable energy and minimum reserve SOC.
  • Allowed event duration and recovery time.
  • Daily or annual cycle expectations.
  • Whether the BESS may discharge during a utility outage or only while the site is grid-connected.
  • How the system coordinates with generators and UPS charging so one device does not create an avoidable overload.

Renewable shifting in the 2- to 4-hour range is identified by Uptime Institute as a developing use case. Longer or more complex services should be treated as an engineering and commercial validation exercise rather than assumed capability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 9: Procure, validate, and commission the design

Before freezing the battery count, obtain the selected manufacturer’s sizing software, discharge curves, inverter limits, recharge curves, thermal deratings, and end-of-life assumptions. Confirm compatibility between the battery-management system, UPS controls, charger, communications, and protection equipment.

DOE/FEMP’s commercial-scale BESS procurement checklist, published July 8, 2024, and its customizable lithium-ion BESS specifications, published August 12, 2025, are useful starting references. Tailor them to the project rather than treating them as a complete design.

Technical and safety checks

  • Verify electrical ratings, short-circuit contribution, protection coordination, grounding, and arc-flash requirements.
  • Confirm environmental limits, HVAC requirements, enclosure rating, thermal monitoring, and fire detection or suppression requirements for the jurisdiction.
  • Check required certifications, permits, utility interconnection studies, and emergency-response procedures.
  • Define battery-room access, clearances, lifting paths, maintenance isolation, and replacement logistics.
  • Specify monitoring for voltage, current, temperature, SOC, state of health, alarms, and communications loss.

Performance and maintenance checks

  • Test the required UPS runtime at the design load and at the stated end-of-life condition.
  • Test the defined redundancy failure case, not merely a full-system discharge.
  • Verify charger capacity and recovery time after both a single event and repeated AI or dispatch cycles.
  • Document acceptance limits, alarm responses, bypass procedures, and a return-to-service sequence.
  • Maintain UPS batteries and capacitors according to the manufacturer’s instructions, as DOE recommends.
  • Budget for inspection, capacity testing, software updates, warranty conditions, and eventual module replacement.

Final battery quantity, cabinet count, topology, and autonomy are project engineering outputs. They cannot be calculated responsibly from facility size alone.

A compact screening example—and why it is not the final design

Suppose the documented critical load is 500 kW and the required support time is 30 minutes. The screening energy is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

500 kW × 0.5 hour = 250 kWh delivered

The installed battery must be larger than 250 kWh if the UPS and converter consume energy, only part of the SOC range is usable, the battery is cold or hot, capacity has declined by end of life, or an engineering reserve is required. The final value must come from the selected equipment’s curves at the specified kW, temperature, SOC window, and end-of-life condition. If the design is N+1 or 2N, repeat the calculation for the surviving path in the defined failure scenario.

Common sizing mistakes and the correction for each

  • Using average facility kW: map the protected boundary and use coincident critical-load data.
  • Confusing UPS autonomy with multi-hour BESS operation: state whether the duty is ride-through, backup, peak shaving, renewable shifting, or smoothing.
  • Applying a generic redundancy multiplier: model the actual module or power-path failure and surviving load.
  • Using nominal nameplate kWh: apply the manufacturer’s usable SOC, conversion, temperature, discharge-rate, and end-of-life data.
  • Checking energy but not power: verify kW, kVA, ramp rate, overload, and converter response.
  • Ignoring recharge: prove that the charger restores energy between repeated events, including AI cycles.
  • Generalizing a vendor cabinet simulation: reproduce the calculation with your workload, battery model, SOC limits, and temperature.
  • Choosing a chemistry by headline claims: compare safety, lifecycle economics, maturity, supply, maintenance, and service support for the actual duty.
  • Leaving auxiliaries out: include cooling, controls, pumps, networking, and other equipment that must remain powered.
  • Stopping at procurement: commission the runtime, failure case, recharge behavior, alarms, and monitoring before declaring the system ready.

The design package a responsible sizing decision should contain

A reviewable design should leave an audit trail from the duty statement to the equipment order. Keep the load register and time-series data, one-line diagram, kW and kVA assumptions, power-factor values, growth schedule, selected failure case, UPS and battery curves, SOC and end-of-life assumptions, temperature profile, recharge calculation, control sequence, interconnection requirements, safety documents, acceptance tests, and replacement plan together.

The practical rule is simple: size power for the worst instantaneous duty, size delivered energy for the required duration, and convert that requirement to installed capacity using the selected equipment’s real operating limits. Treat UPS protection and BTM energy management as coordinated but separate systems, and do not approve a battery count until the manufacturer and the site engineer have validated the complete failure, temperature, aging, and recharge scenarios.
