To simulate an artificial spin ice, represent each elongated nanomagnet as a binary Ising-like moment, define the lattice and interactions, equilibrate with an appropriate Monte Carlo or dynamical method, and measure defects, correlations, and response while sweeping temperature or field. String-like defects are then extracted by connecting charged (ice-rule-violating) vertices or by tracking flipped islands between successive configurations.
The reliable result is not a single “critical temperature.” Phase behavior depends on lattice geometry, long-range interactions, disorder, boundaries, system size, and the temperature or field protocol. A defensible simulation therefore combines finite-size checks, independent initial states, explicit equilibration tests, and observables chosen for the question—thermodynamic order, monopole trajectories, or island-scale reversal physics.

What a spin-ice simulation is actually modeling
Artificial spin ice is a patterned array of coupled, elongated nanomagnets. Shape anisotropy makes each island favor magnetization along its long axis, so an island can often be reduced to a binary variable, such as s_i = +1 or s_i = -1. The physical moment is the product of that sign, the island’s easy-axis unit vector, and its magnetic-moment magnitude.

A common mesoscopic model uses pairwise dipolar energy, with the full vector separation and island orientations retained. A faster lattice model may keep only selected couplings, such as nearest-neighbor terms or a geometry-specific interaction matrix. The dipole approximation gives up details of the magnetization inside each island, but it makes much larger lattices practical and can reproduce emergent ordering, Dirac strings, and phase transitions.

At each vertex, the arrows entering and leaving the junction obey local ice rules in the low-energy manifold. In a square array, for example, the lowest-energy vertex classes are selected by the island geometry and interaction strengths; in kagome and other lattices, the allowed low-energy populations differ. An “unhappy” or charged vertex violates the local rule. A pair of opposite charges connected by a chain of flipped moments is commonly called a monopole-antimonopole pair joined by a Dirac string. These are emergent defects, not isolated fundamental magnetic charges.
Geometry, temperature, and disorder determine which phases are reachable. Square, kagome, Santa Fe, and other lattices can have different ground states and transition behavior even when their islands have similar moments. Do not transfer a reported transition temperature from one geometry to another without mapping the interaction scale and protocol.
Define the model before choosing an algorithm
Specify geometry and boundaries
Store the center coordinate and easy-axis direction of every island. Record the vertex connectivity and plaquette structure as separate data, because string extraction needs graph information that is not always recoverable from coordinates alone. Decide whether the array is finite, periodic, or uses another boundary condition. Open edges can create or absorb defects and can therefore change apparent defect densities and string lengths.

Choose the interaction Hamiltonian
A typical dipolar Hamiltonian can be written as H = (mu0/4pi) sum_(i<j) [m_i·m_j/r_ij^3 - 3(m_i·r_hat_ij)(m_j·r_hat_ij)/r_ij^3], where m_i is the signed island moment and r_ij joins island centers. Use a consistent convention for the sign, moment magnitude, and energy units. If you truncate the interaction, state the cutoff and test its effect; long-range dipolar terms can select an ordered state that a nearest-neighbor model misses.
For large lattices, a dipole approximation or precomputed geometry-specific coupling matrix is usually the practical compromise. Ewald or another long-range treatment is preferable when periodic boundaries and accurate bulk energies matter. A nearest-neighbor model is useful for controlled comparisons and algorithm development, but it should not be presented as microscopically equivalent to the full array.
Make disorder and protocols explicit
- Island length, width, thickness, moment magnitude, and easy-axis angle distributions.
- Positional offsets, fabrication-induced coupling variation, and any quenched disorder realization.
- Temperature units, field amplitude and direction, ramp rate, dwell time, and whether the protocol is a field cycle or a thermal sweep.
- Interaction cutoff, Ewald settings, numerical precision, and whether self-interactions are excluded.
- Random-number generator, seed policy, lattice size, and number of independent replicas.
Use reduced units such as energy divided by a reference coupling for comparison, but retain the conversion to physical units. A dimensionless temperature is meaningful only with its reference energy defined.

Monte Carlo workflow for equilibrium and quasi-equilibrium phases
1. Build and inspect the lattice
- Generate coordinates, easy-axis vectors, vertex IDs, plaquette IDs, and neighbor lists.
- Assign moments and disorder from documented distributions. Save the exact realization used for each run.
- Construct the interaction matrix or long-range evaluator and verify that translating or rotating the entire clean lattice leaves the expected energy unchanged.
- Calculate the energy of at least one known limiting configuration, such as a field-polarized or analytically ordered state.
2. Initialize more than one state
Use random, ice-rule, ordered, and field-polarized starts when those states can be generated. Convergence from only one initial condition can hide metastability, especially below an ordering transition. Keep the initialization label with every time series so histories are not mixed accidentally.
3. Equilibrate and measure
A single Monte Carlo sweep should attempt an update for every island on average. For a single-spin Metropolis move, accept an energy-increasing change with probability exp(-DeltaE/kBT) and accept every energy-lowering change. Rejecting moves that violate a coding constraint is safe only if the proposal probability remains symmetric; otherwise detailed balance must be corrected.
Discard a burn-in interval, then measure at a spacing longer than the dominant autocorrelation time. Estimate that time from energy, magnetization, and defect-density histories rather than assuming a fixed number of sweeps. Run independent seeds and report uncertainty across replicas, not just the standard deviation of correlated samples.
4. Sweep temperature or field carefully
For a temperature scan, equilibrate each point independently or use a documented annealing schedule and verify selected points with independent starts. For field-driven hysteresis, record both the field value and the direction of the sweep. A quasi-static curve is not an equilibrium phase diagram when the update rate is too fast for defects to relax.
How to identify a phase transition
No single observable is sufficient. Record several quantities as functions of temperature or field:
Recommended Free Tools
- Energy and heat-capacity proxy: locate broad anomalies, but remember that finite arrays round singularities.
- Order parameter: use the symmetry appropriate to the lattice, not the net magnetization by default. An antiferromagnetic or sublattice order parameter can remain invisible in total magnetization.
- Susceptibility or response derivative: define the fluctuating quantity and normalization, then compare peaks across sizes.
- Structure factor: identify the wave vectors of emerging long-range order and distinguish Bragg-like peaks from diffuse ice-manifold scattering.
- Correlation length: estimate it from connected correlations or a structure-factor ratio and test for size-dependent crossings.
- Defect density and charge correlations: measure whether defects proliferate, bind into short strings, or form extended structures.
Repeat the scan for increasing lattice sizes. A transition claim should be supported by consistent finite-size trends, such as crossings of a dimensionless quantity or scaling collapse where the applicable universality class is known. A peak that moves with size, a hysteresis loop, or a change in string statistics alone is evidence of a feature, not proof of a thermodynamic critical point.

Extracting string-like defects from configurations
Static strings from vertex charges
First classify every vertex using the arrows of its incident islands. Mark vertices that violate the chosen ice rule and assign a charge according to the convention used in the model. Build a graph whose edges are lattice links or plaquette connections. Connect charged endpoints through the chain of flipped moments or links that carries the defect.
In the Santa Fe Ice analysis, drawing line segments through each unhappy vertex to connect the relevant plaquettes represents all unhappy vertices as parts of such strings. This construction makes the string a graph object rather than a visual impression. Store each component’s endpoints, number of links, total geometric length, and whether it is an open path, closed loop, or branched component.
Lengths, distributions, and phases
Report both link count and physical length. They differ when lattice spacings or link orientations are unequal. Separate strings touching an open boundary from strings with two interior endpoints, because boundary termination changes the interpretation of their length distribution.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Construct a histogram or probability mass function of lengths for each temperature or field. The Santa Fe Ice work found string lengths with a Boltzmann distribution linked to magnetic interactions. Fit only over a stated range and compare the fit with alternatives; short strings are strongly affected by lattice discreteness and endpoint energies, while long strings are limited by finite size.
Useful companion observables include mean length, median length, longest-component fraction, endpoint separation, loop fraction, branching count, and charge-charge correlation. A “string phase” should be defined by a reproducible change in a combination of these statistics and in the underlying order or correlation functions, not by one unusually long component.
Dynamic strings and monopole trajectories
For dynamics, compare configurations at successive times and build a transition graph. A flipped island is an event on the corresponding lattice edge; changes in vertex charge identify creation, motion, annihilation, or branching. Following connected events through time yields monopole trajectories and a space-time representation of Dirac strings.

Use a time interval short enough to resolve individual events but long enough to avoid recording numerical noise as motion. If several islands flip in one update, preserve the update ordering when the algorithm provides it; otherwise mark the event as simultaneous and avoid inventing a unique path through the intermediate state. Report the temporal resolution and update rule with trajectory statistics.
Monte Carlo, kinetic updates, and micromagnetics
| Method | Best suited to | What it resolves | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Metropolis or cluster Monte Carlo | Equilibrium and quasi-equilibrium phase diagrams; controlled thermal or field sweeps | Configurational statistics, order parameters, defect and string distributions | One attempted spin flip is not automatically a physical time interval |
| Kinetic or rejection-free Monte Carlo | Activated switching and approximate real-time dynamics | Event sequences, waiting times, and monopole motion under a specified rate model | Results depend on the assumed reversal barriers and rate law |
| Micromagnetics | Island reversal, internal magnetization, eigenmodes, and nanoscale fields | Spatial magnetization within each island and defect spectral signatures | Computational cost limits lattice size and long parameter sweeps |
| Dipole-approximation lattice simulator | Large arrays and emergent ordering or string phenomena | Mesoscopic moments with long-range or geometry-specific couplings | It omits internal island structure and may not predict reversal spectra |
Use Monte Carlo when the question is “which configurations are thermodynamically favored?” Use kinetic updates when the question includes rates, waiting times, or hysteresis tied to a reversal model. Use micromagnetics when the target is an island’s reversal pathway, local field, eigenmode, or spectroscopy. A large-array dipolar simulator is a scale tool, not a replacement for micromagnetics when island-scale physics controls the observable.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Micromagnetic validation of defects
Micromagnetic calculations can initialize a nominal monopole pair or string configuration, relax the continuous magnetization, and calculate dynamic response. Defect eigenmodes can distinguish monopoles from strings in a way that binary-spin observables cannot. Compare simulated spectra only after matching geometry, material parameters, damping, excitation, boundary conditions, and frequency normalization to the measurement or reference calculation.
Do not infer a universal defect signature from one mesh or one island shape. Repeat with mesh refinement and verify that the mode is not a numerical artifact or an edge mode. The mesoscopic spin model and micromagnetic model should share the same island centers, easy axes, and moment scale before their observables are compared.
Implementation pattern and pseudocode
build_lattice(geometry, size, boundary, disorder, seed)
J = build_dipolar_or_geometry_couplings(lattice, cutoff, long_range_method)
for init in [random, ice_rule, ordered, field_polarized]:
state = initialize(init, lattice)
for T_or_field in protocol:
equilibrate(state, J, T_or_field, burn_in, update_rule)
samples = []
for sweep in range(measurement_sweeps):
attempt_one_update_per_island(state, J, T_or_field)
if sweep % measurement_stride == 0:
samples.append(observables(state, lattice))
save(samples, seed, init, T_or_field)
for sample in saved_configurations:
vertices = classify_vertices(sample, lattice)
graph = connect_charged_vertices(vertices, lattice)
record_components(graph, link_length, boundary_labels)
The pseudocode is deliberately schematic: the acceptance rule, event rate, and long-range evaluator must match the chosen physical model. Store raw configurations at selected points so that string definitions can be audited or improved without rerunning every sweep.

Validation and failure checks
Energy and balance tests
- For every proposed flip, verify that the computed energy difference equals the direct-energy difference on small test arrays.
- At fixed temperature, compare forward and reverse transition statistics to test detailed balance.
- Check that a fully repeated configuration has zero energy change and that symmetries of a clean lattice are respected.
Finite-size and protocol tests
- Repeat at several linear sizes and distinguish bulk behavior from edge-created defects.
- Use multiple seeds and at least two initialization classes near a suspected transition.
- Change measurement spacing and burn-in; observables should be stable after accounting for autocorrelation.
- Reverse field-sweep direction and vary the sweep rate when studying hysteresis.
- Compare truncated and longer-range interactions before assigning a phase label.
String-extraction tests
- Run the algorithm on a hand-labeled configuration containing one pair, one loop, and a boundary-terminated path.
- Confirm that every marked charged vertex is assigned to exactly one component unless branching is explicitly allowed.
- Check that changing the drawing or traversal order does not change component length.
- Report the charge convention, edge-length convention, and treatment of ambiguous simultaneous flips.
Common mistakes and how to fix them
Calling a finite-size peak a critical point
Heat-capacity or susceptibility peaks broaden and shift in small arrays. Add size dependence, a symmetry-appropriate order parameter, and correlation-length evidence before using “transition.”
Best Value
Using net magnetization as the only order parameter
Many ice and antiferromagnetic states have nearly zero net moment. Calculate sublattice, vertex, or wave-vector-resolved order instead.
Treating Monte Carlo steps as seconds
A rejected or accepted spin flip is an algorithmic move unless a calibrated barrier and rate model are supplied. Use kinetic updates or micromagnetics for claims about physical time.
Ignoring boundaries and disorder
Edges can terminate strings, while quenched disorder pins them and broadens transitions. Publish boundary conditions and disorder realizations, and compare clean and disordered ensembles when the experiment contains fabrication variation.

What established studies demonstrate
Artificial spin ice is a controllable platform for emergent monopole-like defects, collective dynamics, and phase transitions. Monte Carlo studies of Santa Fe Ice classify ground states through string configurations and relate string-length statistics to magnetic interactions. Kagome experiments have observed monopole-antimonopole creation and one-dimensional Dirac-string avalanches; Monte Carlo reproduces corresponding hysteresis and monopole-density trends when the geometry and protocol are matched. Micromagnetic work shows that defect eigenmodes can separate monopoles and strings spectroscopically. Large-scale dipolar simulators extend accessible lattice sizes beyond practical full micromagnetics, while transition-graph methods represent Dirac strings in space-time as monopole trajectories.
These results establish methods and phenomena, not a universal parameter set. Reproduce the exact lattice, interaction convention, disorder, boundaries, and drive protocol of any reference you use, then state clearly which differences are intentional.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are the monopoles in an artificial spin ice simulation real magnetic particles?
No. They are emergent, effective charges assigned to ice-rule-violating vertices. Their motion and interactions can be modeled and measured, but the simulation does not create fundamental magnetic monopoles.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCan one critical temperature be reused for square and kagome spin ice?
No. Geometry changes vertex energies, interaction couplings, ordering, and defect statistics. A temperature must be converted through a stated energy scale and revalidated with finite-size and protocol checks.
What data should accompany a published string-length plot?
Provide lattice geometry, boundary conditions, charge and connection rules, link-versus-physical length definition, temperature or field protocol, equilibration and sampling details, system size, disorder realization, and independent-run uncertainty.
