Choose what else Do Not Disturb silences
The People filter controls calls and other people-related interruptions. In Notification filters, app notifications and alarms or other interruptions have separate controls. Adjust those too if you want to silence app alerts while leaving alarms audible, or change which non-call interruptions are allowed. The available choices depend on the device.
Decide whether repeat callers can get through
Allow repeat callers is separate from allowing selected contacts. When enabled, Google says a call can get through if the same person calls twice within 15 minutes. Turn it on only if you want that fallback; it does not replace setting the People filter for your chosen callers. See Google’s Do Not Disturb instructions.

Account for Android version and phone differences
Google notes that some current steps apply only to Android 14 and later. Its guidance for Android 8.1 and earlier describes older choices—Total silence, Alarms only, and Priority notifications only—rather than the current general route. Do not assume those older labels or menus appear on newer phones. If your Settings screen differs, consult the manufacturer’s instructions; Google also provides US English guidance that includes legacy instructions.

Check the phone’s ring volume and whether it is set to mute or vibrate. Android has separate controls for call, ring, notification, media, and alarm volume; changing notification volume alone may not change the ringtone. See Google’s volume, sound, and vibrate guidance.
-
If the settings appear correct and calls still do not ring, seek device-specific support from the phone manufacturer. These checks are useful starting points, not a guaranteed fix for every model.

A June 19, 2025 Android Community post describes one Fairphone user reporting that calls from starred contacts did not ring despite the setting being enabled. That individual report is not evidence of a general Android failure; it illustrates why manufacturer-specific behavior may need manufacturer support. Read the report.
