Before you sign out: check sync and backup
Your iCloud information remains in iCloud after you sign out, but its copy is removed from the iPad unless you choose to keep a copy when prompted. Check that recent changes have synced and that your iCloud backup is current before proceeding. Not everything on an iPad is backed up to iCloud, so make sure you can access or have copied anything important that is not synced.

If the iPad says some data has not synced
Check Wi-Fi, available iCloud storage, and the sync status at Settings > [your name] > iCloud. Check iCloud.com or another device to see whether recent changes arrived. If they have not, wait for syncing to finish or make an archive or copy before signing out. Apple’s guidance on unsynced data explains these checks.
Sign out in iPad Settings
- Open Settings and tap your name at the top of the sidebar or screen.
- Scroll to the bottom of the account page and tap Sign Out.
- Choose Sign Out But Don’t Erase or Erase this iPad. Read the prompts to see what information will remain or be erased.
- Enter your iPad passcode or Apple Account password if asked, then confirm. For Sign Out But Don’t Erase, tap Confirm and Sign Out. For Erase this iPad, tap Sign Out, then tap Sign Out again.
These are Apple’s current iPad steps; the exact items retained or removed depend on the prompts shown during the process. Apple’s device sign-out instructions cover the available choices.

Choose the sign-out option that matches your goal

Signing out alone is not the same as erasing the iPad: Apple presents these as distinct choices. Back up and check sync before selecting either option.
What signing out changes on the iPad
Signing out disconnects the iPad from iCloud, the App Store and other Apple media services, iMessage, and FaceTime. It also turns off iCloud-linked features on that device, including Find My, iCloud Backup, iCloud Drive, iCloud Keychain, iCloud Mail, Notes, Photos, Shared Albums, Messages in iCloud, Reminders, and third-party app data that uses iCloud. Other affected services and features include Apple Pay, Game Center, Home, shared iWork documents, syncing of contacts, calendars, bookmarks and Safari tabs, and Continuity.

For iCloud+ users, signing out also removes access on that iPad to Private Relay, Hide My Email, HomeKit Secure Video support, and a custom email domain. Feature availability varies by country or region. Apple Cash and Apple Card are linked to the Apple Account; they cannot be transferred to a different account or accessed through one.

If you only want to turn off specific iCloud features
You do not have to sign out to stop using selected iCloud features. Change the relevant iCloud settings instead, so other account services can remain signed in. See Apple’s explanation of what signing out changes for the affected services.
