To sign out of ChatGPT everywhere, open Settings, choose Security (or Security and login), open Active sessions, select Log out of all sessions or Log out all, and confirm. Your current session is ended immediately; other active ChatGPT sessions can take up to 30 minutes to receive the logout. This is the correct response when you lose a device or see a login you do not recognize.
The control only covers sessions that OpenAI’s account security system knows about. It does not revoke third-party app sessions, connected apps, Sign in with ChatGPT sessions used only by other services, or Codex CLI sessions. If you suspect account takeover, combine the global logout with a password change, security-history review, API-key checks where relevant, and support contact.

What “sign out everywhere” actually does
ChatGPT can keep an account signed in on several browsers, phones, tablets, desktop applications, and other first-party contexts. The Active sessions page gives you a central view of the sessions OpenAI can identify and lets you terminate one session or all of them.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesOpenAI’s Help Center describes the all-devices action this way: it “logs you out of all active sessions across devices, including your current session” and “may take up to 30 minutes.” The current-session row itself cannot be logged out with its individual control. The global action is therefore the right choice when the device you need to remove is the one you are using now, when a row has no Log out button, or when a row says Session status unavailable.

Before you begin
- Use the ChatGPT account whose sessions you want to terminate. If you have more than one account, verify the account identity before confirming.
- Look for either Security or Security and login. OpenAI uses both labels in its current guidance, and the wording can vary by interface.
- If you are signed in through an organization, SAML, or OIDC single sign-on arrangement, the Active sessions area may not be available for that account.
- If you are responding to a lost or stolen device, do not wait to recover that device before using the global control.
Sign out of ChatGPT on every device from the web
- Open ChatGPT and go to Settings. Use the account menu in the ChatGPT interface, then select Settings.
- Open the security page. Select Security or Security and login, whichever label appears in your account.
- Open Active sessions. This page lists the OpenAI-managed sessions currently associated with the account.
- Start the global logout. Select Log out of all sessions. Some interfaces use the shorter label Log out all.
- Confirm the warning. Choose Log out all, then confirm Log out of all devices if that second confirmation appears.
- Sign in again only where needed. Your current ChatGPT session ends as part of the action. Other ChatGPT sessions may remain usable briefly while the logout propagates; OpenAI says the delay can be up to 30 minutes.
Do not select an individual row when your goal is to remove every device. A row-level action affects one listed session, while the global control is the only option that covers all active ChatGPT sessions known to the account.
What you see in Active sessions
Entries can include information that helps you identify a device before revoking it:
- Device or browser information.
- The first-party context, such as ChatGPT, Codex, or API Platform.
- An approximate location.
- The sign-in date and time.
- Whether the device is trusted.
- Whether the entry is the session you are currently using.
Location is approximate, so treat it as a clue rather than proof of a person’s physical whereabouts. Compare the browser, device context, and sign-in time with your own activity before deciding whether to revoke only one session or use the all-devices control.

Use a row-level logout when you recognize all other sessions and want to remove only one browser or device.
| Situation | Control to use | Result |
|---|---|---|
| One ordinary session should be removed | Log out on that row | That listed session is revoked. |
| A trusted device should be removed | Log out and remove | The session is revoked and the device is also removed from trusted devices. |
| The row is the current session | Use Log out of all sessions or Log out all | The current session and other active ChatGPT sessions are included. |
| A row has no logout control or says Session status unavailable | Use the global logout control | OpenAI recommends the all-sessions action for this case. |
After selecting a row-level control, refresh the list only after the action has had time to register. If the entry cannot be individually revoked, do not keep trying to force the row action; use the global control instead.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5C NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5C NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
If you lost a phone, computer, or browser
Use the all-devices procedure immediately, even if the lost device is not visible by a familiar name. The global logout is designed for an unknown or inaccessible device and does not require you to open ChatGPT on that device.
- From any available ChatGPT session, open Settings.
- Open Security or Security and login, then Active sessions.
- Choose Log out of all sessions or Log out all.
- Confirm Log out all devices.
- Allow up to 30 minutes for other ChatGPT sessions to be logged out.
If the lost device was trusted, a global logout removes its active session. A single-device action labeled Log out and remove additionally removes that trusted-device status, but you do not need to identify the device first when you are worried about access.

What this control covers—and what it does not
The security page manages active sessions known to OpenAI’s session-management system. It is not a universal “disconnect every service that ever used this account” button.
| Session or connection | Managed by Active sessions? | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Active ChatGPT browser or app session shown in the list | Yes | Use Log out for one row or the global logout for all listed active ChatGPT sessions. |
| First-party context identified as ChatGPT, Codex, or API Platform | It may appear when OpenAI identifies it as an active session | Inspect the row details and revoke it when the control is available. |
| Third-party app session | No | Sign out or revoke access in that third-party service’s own account controls. |
| Connected app | No | Manage the connection in the relevant connected-app settings. |
| Sign in with ChatGPT session used only for another service | No | Use the other service’s account or session-management controls. |
| Codex CLI session | No | End or reauthenticate the CLI session using the CLI and account-management procedures that apply to it. |
| Organization account using SAML or OIDC single sign-on | Active sessions may not be available | Follow your organization’s identity-provider and administrator procedures. |
Because these categories are outside the Active sessions page, a successful global logout is not proof that every application connected to your identity has been disconnected.
If you suspect unauthorized access
Unexpected activity, an exposed password, or a sign-in you cannot explain calls for more than a logout. OpenAI recommends a sequence that closes the known sessions and addresses the credentials or integrations that could allow access.

1. Change an exposed, reused, or shared password
Change the account password immediately if it was exposed, reused on another service, or shared with another person. Use a new password that is not used elsewhere. Changing the password addresses the credential itself; it does not substitute for terminating sessions that may already be active.
2. Log out of all ChatGPT sessions
Return to Settings > Security or Security and login > Active sessions, then use Log out of all sessions and confirm. This includes the current session and can take up to 30 minutes to reach other ChatGPT sessions.
3. Review security history and sign-in methods
Check the account’s security history and the sign-in methods associated with it. Look for activity you do not recognize and verify that the available sign-in methods still belong to you. The session list and security history answer different questions: the list shows active sessions, while the history helps you examine account-security events.
4. Check API credentials and usage when relevant
If the account is used with the API, delete exposed API keys and inspect API usage for activity you did not authorize. A ChatGPT session logout does not by itself delete an API key or erase API usage records.
5. Contact OpenAI Support
Contact OpenAI Support when unauthorized activity continues, you cannot secure the account, or the available session information does not explain what happened. Include the relevant security-history and usage details without sending a password or secret key.

MFA does not sign out existing devices
Multi-factor authentication improves protection for future sign-ins, but OpenAI explicitly states that enabling MFA does not cancel existing logins. If you turn on MFA and need every previous device removed, manually perform the all-devices logout afterward.
A practical order is:
- Change the password if it may be compromised.
- Enable MFA using the account’s security settings.
- Use Log out of all sessions to terminate sessions that were already active.
- Sign in again only on devices you control and trust.
The logout step remains necessary because MFA enrollment alone leaves existing sessions in place.

OpenAI describes Advanced Account Security as an optional setting for eligible personal ChatGPT accounts. It requires stronger sign-in methods, such as passkeys or FIDO-compatible security keys.
What the stronger option requires
- A passkey or a FIDO-compatible security key.
- A security key that your device and sign-in environment support.
- Completion of the enrollment flow for the eligible personal account.
OpenAI names YubiKeys as an example of optional hardware security keys, but says any FIDO-compatible security key can be used. The important distinction is the protocol compatibility, not a particular manufacturer.

Enrollment signs the account out of all devices. You then sign in again with the passkey or security key. Plan for that interruption: keep the required authenticator available before starting enrollment, and expect to authenticate again on every device you continue using.

Timing, status, and common problems
“I confirmed logout, but another device still opens ChatGPT”
Other ChatGPT sessions can take up to 30 minutes to be logged out. During that window, the other device may not reflect the change immediately. Wait for the stated propagation period, then check the Active sessions list again. If access still appears active after that period, repeat the security review and contact OpenAI Support.
“I cannot find Security”
Look for Security and login instead. OpenAI’s labels vary by interface, but both labels refer to the area where session controls may be located.

This is expected. The current-session row cannot be logged out directly. Use Log out of all sessions or Log out all to include it.
“A session says Session status unavailable”
Do not treat the missing status as proof that the session is safe or unsafe. OpenAI recommends the global logout control when a row has no individual logout control or displays Session status unavailable.
“Active sessions is missing from my account”
Organization accounts using SAML or OIDC single sign-on may not have Active sessions. In that case, use your organization’s identity-provider controls and administrator process, and contact OpenAI Support if you need help determining what account-level controls are available.
“I logged out of ChatGPT, but another app still works”
The all-devices control does not manage third-party apps, connected apps, Sign in with ChatGPT sessions used only for third-party services, or Codex CLI sessions. Revoke or end those connections in the service that owns them.
Quick Recap
Choosing the right action
| Goal | Best action | Speed and coverage | Limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Remove one known browser or device | Select that row’s Log out | Targets one OpenAI-managed session | Other sessions remain active. |
| Remove one trusted device | Select Log out and remove | Ends the session and removes trusted-device status | Only that listed device is affected. |
| Remove every active ChatGPT session | Use Log out of all sessions or Log out all | Current session ends immediately; other ChatGPT sessions may take up to 30 minutes | Does not cover third-party, connected-app, Sign in with ChatGPT-only, or Codex CLI sessions. |
| Protect against future credential use | Change the password and enable MFA | Strengthens subsequent sign-ins | MFA alone does not cancel existing logins. |
| Use the strongest available personal-account sign-in | Enroll in Advanced Account Security when eligible | Uses passkeys or FIDO-compatible security keys and signs out all devices during enrollment | Optional and limited to eligible personal accounts. |
A concise response checklist
- Lost or unknown device: use the global logout immediately.
- Known unwanted device: revoke its row; use Log out and remove if it is trusted.
- Compromised password: change it, then log out all sessions.
- New MFA enrollment: still perform a manual all-devices logout.
- API exposure: delete affected keys and inspect API usage.
- Third-party or connected-app access: revoke it in that service, not in Active sessions.
- Organization SSO account: use the identity provider or administrator process if Active sessions is unavailable.
- Unresolved or continuing suspicious activity: contact OpenAI Support.
