There is no legitimate Apple Account (formerly Apple ID) password bypass. On an iPhone, iPad or Apple Vision Pro, Apple may let you confirm sign-out with that device’s passcode. Otherwise, reset the account password or begin account recovery. If you sold or gave away the device, use Find My to erase it and remove it from your account; that is a destructive after-sale procedure, not a general sign-out trick.
What “Apple ID” means now
Apple has renamed Apple ID to Apple Account. Existing Apple ID email addresses or phone numbers, passwords and sign-in process continue to work. Apple’s menus may show “Apple Account,” while many people still search for “Apple ID.”

Choose the right route first
| Your situation | Best route | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| You still have the iPhone, iPad or Vision Pro and can unlock it | Try the device passcode at sign-out | Signs the account out while letting you choose whether to retain or erase local copies of data. |
| You have another trusted Apple device signed in to the account | Change the password there | Restores account access without erasing the device first. |
| You have no trusted device | Use Apple’s web password-reset route | Follows Apple’s current identity checks, which can change. |
| Reset does not work | Start account recovery | Apple may impose a waiting period; the time shown for your account is controlling. |
| You sold or gave away the device and no longer have it | Erase and remove it through Find My | Deletes its contents and removes Activation Lock. This cannot be undone for the device’s local data. |
1. Try your device passcode at sign-out
Apple’s sign-out flow for iPhone, iPad and Apple Vision Pro accepts either the Apple Account password or the device passcode when the prompt offers that choice.
- Open Settings.
- Tap your account name at the top.
- Scroll down and tap Sign Out.
- When prompted, choose whether to retain a copy of requested data on the device or erase the local copies.
- Enter the device passcode if Apple offers it, then follow the remaining prompts.
This is not a universal bypass. You must know the passcode, and Screen Time, mobile-device-management or other security restrictions can still require additional authorization. If the passcode option is not offered, use password reset or account recovery rather than repeatedly guessing.

2. Change the password on a trusted Apple device
Apple describes a signed-in trusted device as the easiest way to reset a forgotten password because the device has already been associated with your account.
iPhone or iPad
- Open Settings and tap your account name.
- Tap Sign-In & Security.
- Tap Change Password.
- Authenticate with the device passcode and create a new Apple Account password.
Mac
On a Mac, open System Settings, select your account, open Sign-In & Security, and choose the password-change command. macOS may require the Mac login password. Menu labels can vary by macOS release and region.

After changing the password, return to the device you want to disconnect and complete Settings > account name > Sign Out, or the equivalent account pane in System Settings on Mac.
3. Reset the password on Apple’s website
If you do not have a trusted signed-in Apple device, use Apple’s official web password-reset instructions. Start from Apple Support’s current password-reset page rather than relying on an old menu path or an unofficial “unlock” service. You will need access to the verification methods Apple accepts for your account.

Once the password is reset, sign out normally on the device. A password reset does not by itself erase the device or remove its local data.
4. Start account recovery
If the normal reset process cannot verify you, begin account recovery at iforgot.apple.com. Apple may place the account in a waiting period while it verifies ownership.

If the device is no longer in your possession, the prior owner can use Find My (also called Find Devices on the web) to erase it remotely and then choose Remove This Device. This deletes the device’s contents and removes Activation Lock so the new owner can activate it.

- Open Find My on another Apple device or Apple’s Find Devices web service and sign in.
- Select the sold or given-away device.
- Choose Erase This Device and confirm the erase.
- After the erase completes or the device is shown as offline and eligible, choose Remove This Device.
Removal is permanent for the device’s local data and should be used only when you no longer need to protect or retrieve it. It is not the right solution for a phone you still use and simply cannot remember the password for.
Activation Lock: why a factory reset is not enough
Find My enables Activation Lock. Apple requires the Apple Account password or device passcode before someone can turn off Find My, erase an iPhone or iPad, or reactivate it for use. Consequently, a factory reset does not guarantee that the account association disappears; Activation Lock can remain until the owner removes the device.
If the device was stolen or lost
Mark a stolen or lost iPhone or iPad as lost in Find My and do not remove it from Find My. Apple warns that removing it also removes Activation Lock, making it easier for a thief to erase and resell the device. Use the sold-device erase-and-remove route only when ownership has genuinely transferred.
Mac-specific cases
On a Mac, sign out from the account section of System Settings. To disable Find My on a Mac, Apple’s Activation Lock process requires the account password or the Mac’s device passcode. If the Mac is offline, its owner can use iCloud Find My to remove it after erasure. A person with proof of purchase can submit an Activation Lock support request, but Apple does not guarantee approval for every request.
Quick Recap
Protect your data before signing out
- Read Apple’s retain-or-erase choice carefully; signing out can remove local copies of iCloud data from that device.
- Confirm that photos, contacts, notes and other needed data are synced or backed up before choosing erase.
- Do not install software or pay a service that claims to bypass Apple Account authentication. A phone, accessory or repair tool cannot confer account authorization.
