At the Windows 11 sign-in screen, select your user account, enter the password or Windows Hello method configured for that PC, then press Enter or select the sign-in arrow. If you are already signed in to a local account and want to use a Microsoft account instead, switch it in Settings under Accounts > Your info.

Sign in to your Microsoft account on the Windows 11 sign-in screen

  1. Turn on the PC, or return to the Windows sign-in screen. Select your account if Windows displays more than one; if you are the only user, Windows may select it automatically.

  2. Enter the password for the account or use a sign-in method offered on screen, such as a Windows Hello PIN, face recognition, or fingerprint.

  3. Press Enter or select the sign-in arrow. Windows opens the desktop if the credential is accepted.

A Windows Hello PIN is not the same as your Microsoft account password. The PIN is a sign-in method configured for that device, so use whichever option is available and appropriate on the screen. Microsoft explains the distinction in its Windows Hello guidance.

Switch from a local account to a Microsoft account

A local account is specific to one PC. A Microsoft account is associated with an email address and can be used with Windows and other Microsoft services; some settings and files can sync across devices. If Windows is currently using a local account, change it from Settings:

The conversion option appears when the current Windows account is local. Microsoft recommends a Microsoft account for Windows sign-in and service integration. See Microsoft’s instructions for changing account type.

Choose a password or Windows Hello method

The available sign-in choices depend on the PC and what has been set up. A password works without Windows Hello hardware; a PIN is a device-specific Windows Hello option. Face recognition and fingerprint sign-in require compatible hardware.

Recover a forgotten password or PIN

If you forgot your Microsoft account password

At the sign-in screen, select I forgot my password and follow the recovery prompts. If that option is not shown, choose Sign-in options > Web sign-in, then follow the prompts to reach password recovery. You can also reset the password in a browser using Microsoft’s password reset page.

If you forgot your Windows Hello PIN

Choose I forgot my PIN on the sign-in screen, if available, and complete the recovery steps. PIN recovery is separate from changing the Microsoft account password.

Microsoft’s sign-in recovery instructions are available at Change or reset your password.
