To play video files in a shuffled order, add them to a vMix List input and use its Randomise or Shuffle control. Leave Auto Next on to advance automatically, and enable Loop to start the list again after its last item. Then stream your vMix production to YouTube. The shuffle is configured in vMix—not in a YouTube playlist.
Set up a shuffled video sequence in vMix
- Add a List input. In vMix, add a List input and populate it with the video files you want to play. The List feature treats the files as one input and also supports M3U files. See the vMix User Guide: Video List.
- Randomize the order. Open the List editing controls and select Randomise (also called Shuffle in the documentation). This shuffles the list order; the documentation does not promise that vMix draws a newly randomized item after every playback.
- Set automatic advancement and looping. Keep Auto Next enabled so the next item plays when the current video ends. It is enabled by default according to the user guide. Turn on Loop if playback should return to the start after the final item.
- Stream the production to YouTube. Use vMix’s streaming destination controls to send the production to YouTube. YouTube is a supported destination in vMix; the List’s playback order remains a vMix setting. See the vMix product site.
Control placement and labels can vary by vMix version. The detailed List instructions are for the version 27 guide, while the official product site advertises vMix 29 as of October 2026. If the controls look different in your installation, check the guide for that version.

Choose List or PlayList for your workflow
vMix has two similarly named features with different jobs. List loads video files as one input and provides the randomize control. PlayList automates switching between inputs; it is not the feature that shuffles the order of files inside a video list.

For the ordinary case—playing a shuffled set of files—start with List alone. The vMix scheduling article explains that a List can also be used within a standard PlayList.

Random looping is not a scheduled broadcast
A shuffled, looping List can play videos back-to-back, but it does not provide time-of-day scheduling. If you need specific videos to start at particular clock times, do not treat Randomise and Loop as a schedule. The vMix scheduling article, last updated January 17, 2025, also notes that the older third-party project “vMix Scheduler” was no longer maintained at that time; its current compatibility is not established, so verify it independently before relying on it.
Common setup problems
- The order does not change: confirm you used the List editing control called Randomise or Shuffle. PlayList automates inputs but does not shuffle files within a List.
- Playback stops at the last file: enable Loop if you want the sequence to begin again after its final item.
- The next file does not start automatically: check that Auto Next is enabled in the List controls.
- You cannot find the documented control: the detailed guide linked here is for vMix 27, and labels or placement can differ in other versions. Consult the guide matching your installed version.
- You expected a new random pick after every video: the documented behavior is shuffling the list order; it does not specify a fresh random draw for each transition.
