To shuffle local videos in a 24/7 YouTube livestream, use OBS Studio’s VLC Video Source: add your files to its playlist, then enable Shuffle Playlist and Loop Playlist. YouTube’s own playlist-repeat control is for playback in the YouTube player; it does not turn a playlist into a shuffled encoder livestream.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. Its guidance also says creators must be at least 16. Check your current account status in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. YouTube’s live-streaming requirements can change.
- OBS Studio and VLC installed on the computer that will run the broadcast. OBS’s VLC Video Source depends on VLC; if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. OBS’s Media Sources documentation describes the source and its playlist controls.
- Local video files that you have the rights to use in a livestream, plus a stable internet connection and a computer that can remain on while broadcasting.
Set up a shuffled, looping playlist in OBS
- Confirm livestream access. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and check that livestreaming is available for your channel. Choose an encoder-based stream. If livestreaming is not enabled, follow YouTube’s current eligibility and setup instructions before continuing.
- Install OBS and VLC. Install the VLC version that matches OBS’s architecture. For 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC. If VLC is missing or the architectures do not match, the VLC Video Source may not appear or work as expected.
- Add the playlist source. In OBS, select the scene for your broadcast. In the Sources panel, click + and choose VLC Video Source. Create or select the source, then add the local video files you want in its playlist. OBS documents these controls in its Media Sources guide.
- Enable both playlist options. In the VLC Video Source properties, turn on Shuffle Playlist to vary the order and Loop Playlist to restart the playlist when it reaches the end. These are separate settings: shuffle changes the order; loop repeats the playlist.
- Configure the scene and audio. Arrange the VLC source in the scene and check that the video fits the canvas as intended. Confirm that the source’s audio is reaching the OBS audio mixer and is not muted. Preview several transitions so you can catch missing files, unwanted gaps, or unexpected audio before going live.
- Connect OBS to YouTube Live. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or select the stream and obtain its stream key. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and connect the account or enter the stream key using OBS’s available method. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or share it. Use YouTube’s encoder guidance in the Live Control Room for the current stream configuration.
- Start and verify the broadcast. Start streaming from OBS, then check the Live Control Room preview and status before relying on the stream. Confirm that the video and audio are present and that the playlist advances and loops as expected.
Keep the local setup running
With OBS and VLC running on your own machine, the broadcast depends on that computer, the media files, the applications, and the network remaining available. A sleep setting, restart, application crash, disconnected file, or internet outage can interrupt the broadcast. Plan for power and network continuity, and check the stream rather than assuming that a playlist setting guarantees an uninterrupted 24/7 run.

Do not confuse a YouTube playlist with a livestream playlist
YouTube documents how a viewer can repeat a video or playlist in the YouTube player, including on desktop and TV or console. That repeats playback for the viewer; it is not a method for sending a shuffled set of files as an encoder-based live broadcast. For the latter, configure shuffle and loop in the source that feeds OBS. See YouTube’s instructions for looping videos or playlists.

Check rights and channel suitability
Only stream video and audio you are authorized to broadcast. A file being available to download or already appearing on YouTube does not by itself establish permission to rebroadcast it. Copyright claims or other policy issues can affect a livestream or channel. YouTube’s current rules and account notices should guide your decision; the shuffle settings do not change your obligations or make reused material eligible for monetization.
Troubleshoot common problems
- VLC Video Source is missing: Install VLC, then restart OBS. Match the VLC architecture to OBS; OBS’s documentation specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS.
- The playlist does not shuffle: Open the VLC Video Source properties and confirm Shuffle Playlist is enabled. Shuffle is controlled by the source, not YouTube’s viewer playlist controls.
- The playlist stops at the end: Enable Loop Playlist. Shuffle alone does not make the playlist repeat.
- A video is black, missing, or skipped: Check that the file still exists at the recorded path, can be opened by VLC, and is included in the source playlist. Preview the source in OBS before going live.
- There is no sound: Check the file’s audio, source mute state, OBS audio mixer meters, and the scene’s audio output. Verify sound in the preview.
- YouTube does not receive the stream: Check the Live Control Room for current channel eligibility and stream status, then confirm OBS is connected to the intended YouTube stream with the correct stream key. If you regenerate the key, update OBS to match.
- The stream stops when you leave: A local OBS stream requires the computer and connection to keep operating. Prevent sleep or shutdown if appropriate, and consider whether a cloud-hosted workflow better fits an unattended broadcast.
