Google Maps can show your current driving speed directly on your phone, so Android Auto is not required. Enable the app’s built-in speedometer, start vehicle navigation, and the speed readout appears on the map. Android and iPhone use different menu labels: Android places the switch under Navigation > Driving options, while iPhone places it under Navigation > Map display.
Treat the number as an informational estimate, not a replacement for your car’s calibrated speedometer. Google warns that outside factors can make the Maps reading differ from the vehicle’s actual speed. Check the dashboard speedometer whenever the two readings disagree.

What Google Maps can show on your phone
The phone version of Google Maps can present two separate driving indicators while navigation is active:
| Indicator | What it represents | When it appears | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Current speed | An estimate of how fast you are traveling, shown by the Maps interface. | After the speedometer is enabled and vehicle navigation is running. | It is for information only and can differ from the vehicle’s actual speed. |
| Speed limit | The posted limit that Google has mapped for the road. | Only in locations where Google’s Speed Limits feature is available. | A missing or incorrect limit does not establish the legal limit for the road. |
| Color warning | A visual indication that the displayed speed is above the displayed limit. | Where both the speed indicator and a usable speed-limit value are available. | The color responds to Maps’ displayed data; it is not a substitute for reading signs. |
This is a phone-only setup. Android Auto is a separate in-car interface and is not part of either the Android or iPhone menu path below. You can use a securely mounted phone with Google Maps and never connect it to Android Auto.

Turn on the speedometer on an Android phone
Use the following path in the Google Maps Android app:
- Open Google Maps.
- Tap your profile picture or initial in the upper-right corner.
- Tap Settings, then Navigation.
- Scroll to Driving options.
- Turn on Speedometer.
Now start a route using vehicle navigation. The speed display is intended to appear while you are navigating, rather than as a permanent speed gauge on the ordinary map-browsing screen.
Use the in-navigation shortcut when it is available
In some locations, Google Maps displays a Speed Limit control during navigation. Tapping that control can toggle the speedometer. This shortcut depends on Speed Limits being available for your location. If you do not see the control, use the main Settings path instead.

Google can change menu wording through app releases or server-side updates. Look for a setting named Speedometer inside Navigation, especially under a section labeled Driving options. Do not assume that a missing shortcut means your phone cannot show speed; the full settings path and the in-navigation control are separate entry points.

Turn on the speedometer on an iPhone
Google’s documented iPhone path uses a different label for the same feature:
- Open the Google Maps app.
- Open Settings inside Google Maps.
- Tap Navigation.
- Under Map display, turn on Show speedometer.
- Start vehicle navigation to view the indicator.
A July 9, 2024 report on the iPhone and CarPlay rollout described the speedometer as a circle shown while navigating. It also reported that the speed indicator changes color when the displayed speed exceeds the posted limit. Rollouts can vary, so the setting may not appear at the same time on every account or device.

How to read the speed and speed-limit indicators
Current speed is an estimate
The number shown by Maps is the app’s estimate of your present driving speed. It is useful for a quick visual reference while following a route, but Google does not present it as a calibrated instrument. Keep the vehicle’s own speedometer as the authority for your actual speed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe speed limit is separate data
A speed-limit symbol or number appears only where Google’s Speed Limits feature is available. Coverage is location-dependent, and mapped information can lag behind a newly changed sign or a temporary restriction. If no limit appears, rely on the road signs and local rules rather than treating the blank space as permission to drive at any particular speed.

What the color change means
Where Maps has a usable posted-limit value, the speed indicator can change color when the displayed speed goes above that value. The warning compares two pieces of Maps data: the current estimate and the limit Maps is showing. It does not measure enforcement tolerance, temporary work-zone rules, or conditions that require a lower safe speed.
Seeing both values at once
When Speed Limits is supported on the road, you may see the current-speed indicator together with the posted-limit indicator during navigation. If the speed-limit element is absent, the current-speed display can still work; the two features have different availability requirements.
Why Maps can differ from your car’s speedometer
Google explicitly states that “external factors may cause the Maps Speedometer to differ from your actual speed.” The app’s reading and the dashboard gauge are not guaranteed to match, and a small or changing difference is not proof that either display is malfunctioning.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Google’s safety guidance describes Maps speedometers as “for informational use only” and instructs drivers to use the vehicle’s speedometer to confirm actual driving speed. That qualification applies on both Android and iPhone. If the two readings disagree, slow down as needed and use the dashboard gauge for the driving decision.

A practical comparison check
- Look at both displays only when it is safe and legal to do so; do not handle the phone while moving.
- Use the vehicle speedometer as the reference for compliance with the posted limit.
- Do not recalibrate, reposition, or troubleshoot the phone while driving.
- If the Maps number jumps, freezes, or disappears, continue using the car’s gauge and resolve the app issue after stopping.
Phone placement and visibility
A secure, legal phone mount affects how easily you can see the Maps indicator; it does not improve the app’s speed calculation. A dashboard phone holder or windshield mount should be positioned where it does not block the road, mirrors, instruments, airbags, or controls, and where local law permits. Set the route and mount the phone before moving. If your vehicle has a passenger, let that person adjust the map or check the indicator.
Mounting the phone is optional. The speedometer feature is generated by Google Maps on the handset, whether the phone is resting in a permitted location or attached to a mount. Do not treat a more expensive holder as an accuracy upgrade.

The Speedometer switch is missing
Confirm that you opened the Google Maps app rather than a phone-wide location or driving setting. Return to your profile picture or initial, choose Settings, open Navigation, and inspect Driving options. Google can alter labels or rollout timing, so a menu that differs from the documented path may reflect an app or server update. Search the current Navigation settings for “speedometer” rather than assuming the feature is unavailable.
The switch is on, but no speed appears
Start an actual vehicle route and enter the navigation view. The indicator is designed for navigation, not necessarily for the static map screen. If the route view still has no speed display, stop safely, reopen the Navigation settings, and verify that Speedometer remains enabled. You can also check whether a Speed Limit control appears during navigation and tap it once, because that control can toggle the display where Speed Limits is supported.

The Speed Limit control is absent
The shortcut depends on local Speed Limits availability. Its absence does not by itself mean the current-speed feature is disabled. Use the main setting and follow road signs for the legal limit.
The number or warning seems wrong
Compare Maps with the vehicle’s speedometer after stopping or when a passenger can observe safely. Google’s external-factor warning means the Maps value should not be used to challenge the dashboard reading. If the color warning does not appear, check whether Maps is showing a posted limit for that road; a color comparison cannot work without limit data.
iPhone troubleshooting
Show speedometer is not listed
Open Google Maps’ own Settings, then Navigation, and look under Map display. The iPhone feature and its CarPlay presentation have been rolling out over time; the July 9, 2024 report does not establish identical availability for every device or account. If the option is absent, check again after the app has received its current update and use the dashboard speedometer in the meantime.

Enable Show speedometer and begin vehicle navigation. The reported iPhone presentation is a circle shown while navigating, so remaining on the route-planning screen may not display it. Stop before changing settings or moving the phone.
The color warning does not change
The warning requires both a current-speed display and an available posted-limit value. If Maps has no Speed Limits data for that road, there may be no comparison color even though the speedometer itself is enabled. Follow the physical signs and the vehicle’s speedometer rather than waiting for a color change.
A reliable before-and-during-drive routine
- While parked, open Google Maps and enable the appropriate speedometer setting for your phone.
- Enter the destination and choose vehicle navigation.
- Place the phone in a secure, legally permitted position with the map readable without blocking the road or instruments.
- Before pulling away, confirm that the dashboard speedometer is visible and understand that it is the authoritative speed reference.
- During the trip, use Maps’ number as a supplementary glanceable aid. Treat a displayed speed limit as mapping information, not as a replacement for roadside signs.
- If Maps and the car disagree, follow the vehicle gauge, slow down when appropriate, and investigate the app only after parking.
Safety and legal limits
Google Maps’ speedometer is a convenience feature, not a certified measuring instrument. Google’s “informational use only” warning applies even when the display looks stable or the color warning appears to match a sign. Driving laws differ by jurisdiction, and phone-mount placement and phone handling are regulated in many places. Follow local requirements, keep your attention on the road, and make all setup changes before driving.
Android Auto is not needed for this phone-based method, but avoiding Android Auto does not remove the need for a safe mount, a visible dashboard speedometer, or compliance with local distracted-driving rules.
