How to Show Your Apple Wallet ID at Airport Security

At a participating U.S. TSA checkpoint, you can present an eligible identity credential from Apple Wallet on an iPhone or Apple Watch. Follow the identity reader’s instructions, review the information requested on your device, and authorize the disclosure. Wallet ID is not accepted at every airport, terminal, or lane, so verify the checkpoint and carry a physical TSA-accepted ID when practical.

What you need before you travel

Apple Wallet presentation works only when three conditions line up: your credential can be added to Wallet, the airport checkpoint has a compatible identity reader, and your device can complete the authorization flow. Meeting only one or two of those conditions is not enough.

An eligible state-issued ID

Apple’s supported-jurisdiction list checked on October 13, 2026 includes Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Maryland, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Puerto Rico, Virginia, and West Virginia. The list covers participating state-issued driver’s licenses and state IDs, not every U.S. license or identification card. Apple can change the list, so check its current ID in Wallet page before enrolling and again before an important trip.

Or a passport-based Digital ID

Apple offers a separately named Digital ID created from a U.S. passport. Apple describes it as usable for identity verification at participating TSA checkpoints on domestic flights. It is not the same credential as a physical passport and is not itself a REAL ID document.

A participating checkpoint

Apple says Wallet IDs work at eligible U.S. airports and TSA checkpoints. Participation can differ by airport, terminal, checkpoint, or lane. Look for the relevant digital-identification signage and follow local instructions; do not assume that an airport accepts Wallet ID simply because another airport does.

A practical fallback

Bring a physical credential that TSA lists as acceptable whenever practical. A fallback matters if your checkpoint is not participating, the reader is unavailable, or your phone or watch cannot complete the transaction.

Plan the setup before airport day

Check eligibility and complete enrollment while you still have time to resolve a problem. State credentials are sent to the issuing state for approval, and passport-based Digital ID requires both a passport scan and a chip-reading step. A credential that is only submitted, partially scanned, or waiting for approval is not a credential you should count on at the checkpoint.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm the credential type. Decide whether you are enrolling an eligible state driver’s license or state ID, or creating the separately named Digital ID from a U.S. passport.
  2. Check Apple’s live jurisdiction list. The list can change, so do not rely on a list copied into an old travel article or shared by another traveler.
  3. Finish every verification step. Open Wallet again after enrollment and confirm that the credential is approved and available to present.
  4. Confirm the airport plan. Look for the airport or checkpoint’s digital-identification instructions and allow for the possibility that another lane will be needed.
  5. Pack the physical backup. Keep a TSA-accepted document accessible rather than buried in checked luggage or somewhere you cannot reach before the checkpoint.

This preparation also prevents a common mistake: assuming that a card visible in Wallet is automatically accepted by every reader. Wallet availability and checkpoint participation are separate requirements.

How to add a state driver’s license or ID to Apple Wallet

Complete enrollment before you leave for the airport. Apple’s setup flow sends the credential to the issuing state for approval, so adding it at the checkpoint is not a viable last-minute step.

  1. Open Wallet and start adding an ID. Choose the option for a driver’s license or state ID, then select your issuing jurisdiction when prompted.
  2. Scan both sides of the card. Use the iPhone camera to capture the front and back of the physical ID. Keep the card flat and follow the on-screen framing guidance.
  3. Complete identity confirmation. Apple’s flow may ask you to follow movement or selfie instructions so it can confirm that the person enrolling matches the credential.
  4. Submit the enrollment for state approval. The issuing authority must approve the credential before it is usable. Do not treat a pending submission as an accepted ID at TSA.
  5. Check that the credential appears in Wallet. Open Wallet before the trip and verify that the ID is present and ready to present. Keep the physical card with your travel documents.

The exact screens can change as Apple and participating jurisdictions update their enrollment processes. Use the current instructions shown in Wallet rather than relying on an old screenshot or a setup guide for a different state.

How to create passport-based Digital ID in Wallet

Passport-based Digital ID uses a U.S. passport rather than a state license. Apple’s process combines an image of the passport with information read from the passport’s embedded chip.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Start Digital ID setup in Wallet. Select the passport-based Digital ID option rather than a state driver’s license or ID.
  2. Scan the passport photo page. Position the passport so Wallet can capture the biographical page clearly.
  3. Read the passport chip with the iPhone. Follow the positioning instructions until the phone reads the chip’s data.
  4. Complete identity confirmation. Finish the requested verification steps and wait for Wallet to confirm setup.
  5. Verify the credential before departure. Open Wallet and confirm the Digital ID is available. Keep the physical passport as a separate travel document.

Apple identifies this Digital ID as an alternative indicator for acceptable identity at participating TSA checkpoints. That description does not make it a REAL ID credential, and it does not establish that it can replace a physical passport for international travel, immigration inspection, or border crossing.

How to present Apple Wallet ID at TSA

The presentation flow is designed around an identity reader at the checkpoint. You do not show a screenshot or a photograph of your license; you present the Wallet credential through the supported reader and approve the requested disclosure on your device.

  1. Find the participating lane. Check the checkpoint signs and ask a TSA officer if you cannot tell whether digital identification is accepted there.
  2. Open the credential when instructed. On an iPhone, open Apple Wallet and select the eligible ID. Apple also supports presentation from Apple Watch for domestic flights.
  3. Hold the device near the reader. Follow the reader’s positioning or contactless instructions. The reader and device will indicate when they are communicating.
  4. Review the request on the device. Wallet shows the specific identity information the checkpoint is requesting. Read the prompt before approving it.
  5. Authorize presentment. Confirm the disclosure on the iPhone or Apple Watch using the device’s requested authentication method. Information is not shared merely because the device is near the reader.
  6. Wait for completion. Keep the device in place until the reader and Wallet indicate that the transaction is finished, then follow the TSA officer’s directions for the rest of screening.

Apple’s TSA presentation guidance covers iPhone and Apple Watch use for domestic flights. A successful Wallet transaction verifies identity for that checkpoint; it does not create a general travel document for other agencies or countries.

What the approval screen means

The approval prompt is part of the security flow, not an optional preview. Apple says the device shows the specific information requested by the reader and does not share it without your confirmation. If the request does not match the identity check you expect, pause and ask the TSA officer for clarification instead of approving automatically. Keep the device in your hand until the exchange is complete so you can see any additional prompt.

Which credential should you use?

The three practical choices have different eligibility and travel limits.

Credential Who can add it Where it can be used What it is not Recommended backup
State-issued driver’s license or state ID in Wallet Residents of an Apple-supported jurisdiction whose enrollment is approved by the issuing state Participating U.S. TSA checkpoints that accept Wallet ID Not a guarantee of acceptance at every airport, terminal, or lane Physical TSA-accepted identification
Passport-based Digital ID in Wallet People with a U.S. passport who complete Apple’s scan, chip-reading, and identity-confirmation process Participating TSA checkpoints for domestic-flight identity verification Not a physical passport, not a REAL ID document, and not established as a replacement for international travel documents Physical U.S. passport or another TSA-accepted credential
Physical TSA-accepted credential Travelers who possess an accepted document TSA checkpoints under the agency’s current identification rules Does not provide the contactless Wallet presentation flow Keep it available even when using Wallet

TSA says its list of acceptable identification can change without notice. The agency lists a U.S. passport among accepted credentials, along with other federal and state documents. Check TSA’s current acceptable-identification guidance if your document, name, or travel situation is unusual.

REAL ID rules and why a regular license may not be enough

Beginning May 7, 2025, TSA stopped accepting state-issued licenses and IDs that are not REAL ID-compliant as valid identification at airport checkpoints. A noncompliant license is therefore not a dependable workaround if you do not have an accepted alternative.

TSA says a traveler who arrives without acceptable identification may be sent through an identity-verification process and may receive additional screening. If TSA cannot confirm the traveler’s identity, the traveler will not be allowed through the checkpoint. The process is not a promise that you will be admitted, and it can add uncertainty to an already time-sensitive departure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apple’s passport-based Digital ID has a specific distinction: Apple says it is not a REAL ID document, while noting that participating TSA checkpoints can receive an indicator that it is an acceptable alternative to REAL ID. That statement applies to the participating checkpoint use case; it does not change the status of the physical passport or convert a noncompliant state license into a REAL ID.

Privacy, consent, and what is shared

Apple says Wallet shows the precise information requested by the reader and does not share it without your confirmation. After authorization, Apple describes an end-to-end encrypted connection between the device and reader. Apple also says that neither Apple nor the issuing state authority knows when or where the ID is presented.

TSA separately says digital-identification information is received at checkpoints with the passenger’s consent. TSA says it does not copy or store the digital ID except in limited testing environments it describes in its digital-identification FAQ.

These are Apple’s and TSA’s stated practices, not independent audit findings. The practical control for a traveler is the approval screen: read what the reader requests and decline or stop if the request does not match the checkpoint’s purpose.

What to do when Wallet ID does not work

Your state is not listed

You cannot add a state license through Apple’s supported Wallet flow when the issuing jurisdiction is not on Apple’s current list. Use a physical TSA-accepted credential and check the list again before a later trip; support can expand or change.

The airport or lane does not accept digital ID

Move to the checkpoint or lane identified by the airport or TSA for digital identification, if one is available. If no participating lane is operating, present your physical credential instead. Do not rely on a digital credential merely because it appears correctly in Wallet.

The credential is still pending approval

A submitted state ID is not the same as an approved Wallet ID. Use your physical accepted document until Wallet shows that enrollment is complete and the credential can be presented.

The reader does not respond

Follow the officer’s instructions, reposition the iPhone or Apple Watch as directed, and wait for the reader prompt. If the transaction cannot be completed, use the physical fallback rather than delaying the line while repeatedly attempting an unsupported presentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You are asked for a different document

Wallet ID is for the identity-verification step at an eligible TSA checkpoint. It does not satisfy every document requirement associated with a trip. For example, international travel can involve passport and border-control requirements that are outside the domestic TSA Wallet flow.

You accidentally approve the wrong request

Stop and notify the TSA officer immediately if the information request or transaction does not appear to match the checkpoint process. Do not hand over a screenshot or photograph as a substitute for the supported Wallet presentation. Use the physical document if the officer directs you to switch methods.

Domestic flights versus international travel

The evidence for Apple Wallet credentials described here is limited to participating TSA checkpoints and domestic-flight identity verification. Do not infer that a state ID in Wallet or passport-based Digital ID can be used for airline check-in, foreign immigration, customs, or border crossing.

Carry the physical passport and any other documents required for the destination when traveling internationally. A digital credential that works at a U.S. security checkpoint does not replace those documents.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you arrive without acceptable identification

TSA says travelers without acceptable identification may be directed into an identity-verification process and may face additional screening. That process is discretionary and does not guarantee entry. If TSA cannot confirm identity, the traveler will not be allowed through the checkpoint. For that reason, treating a non-REAL-ID license, an enrollment that is still pending, or an unconfirmed Wallet lane as your only plan creates avoidable risk.

The safest approach is to verify your document and checkpoint before leaving, then keep an accepted physical credential available even when Wallet is your preferred method. TSA also states that its acceptable-ID list is subject to change without notice, so review current agency guidance when your document situation is unusual.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming every airport accepts Wallet ID. Acceptance is limited to eligible airports and checkpoints, and can vary within an airport.
  • Using a screenshot. The supported method is a Wallet credential presented through an identity reader, followed by on-device authorization.
  • Waiting to enroll at the checkpoint. State approval and passport verification must be completed in advance.
  • Calling passport-based Digital ID a REAL ID. Apple says it is not a REAL ID document, even though a participating TSA checkpoint may receive an acceptable-alternative indicator.
  • Leaving the physical document at home. A backup covers an unavailable reader, a nonparticipating lane, or an unsuccessful device transaction.
  • Assuming domestic TSA use equals international acceptance. Wallet presentation at a U.S. checkpoint does not establish acceptance by another country or border agency.

Airport-day checklist

  • Confirm that your state-issued ID is on Apple’s current supported-jurisdiction list, or complete passport-based Digital ID setup in advance.
  • Open Wallet before leaving and verify that the credential is approved and presentable.
  • Check the airport’s TSA checkpoint signage or current instructions for digital-identification participation.
  • Bring a physical TSA-accepted credential, especially when checkpoint coverage is uncertain.
  • At the reader, review the requested information and authorize sharing on the iPhone or Apple Watch.
  • For international travel, carry the physical passport and all destination-required documents.

The short answer

You can show an Apple Wallet ID at airport security only at a participating TSA checkpoint. Add and approve the credential before travel, use the reader-directed presentation flow, confirm the information request on your device, and keep a physical TSA-accepted ID available. Apple Wallet does not guarantee acceptance at every airport and does not replace physical documents for international travel.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I show my ID on my iPhone at TSA?

At a participating checkpoint, open the eligible ID in Apple Wallet, follow the identity reader’s instructions, review the information requested on the iPhone, and authorize the disclosure on the device. A screenshot or photo is not the supported presentation method.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use my Apple Wallet driver’s license at airport security?

Yes, if the issuing jurisdiction is on Apple’s current supported list, the enrollment has been approved, and the specific TSA checkpoint accepts Wallet ID. Keep a physical TSA-accepted credential as a fallback.

Does TSA accept Apple Wallet ID at my airport?

Acceptance is limited to eligible U.S. airports and TSA checkpoints and can vary by terminal, lane, or operating conditions. Check local digital-identification signage and ask a TSA officer if you are unsure.

Can I use Apple Wallet ID from an Apple Watch?

Apple’s TSA presentation guidance supports eligible Wallet credentials on iPhone or Apple Watch for domestic flights at participating checkpoints. Follow the reader and watch prompts and authorize the requested disclosure.

Can I use my passport in Apple Wallet to fly?

Apple’s passport-based Digital ID can provide identity verification at participating TSA checkpoints for domestic flights. It is distinct from a physical passport, is not a REAL ID document, and is not established as a replacement for a passport for international travel or border crossing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if my state is not supported?

A state license from a jurisdiction not on Apple’s current list cannot be added through the supported Wallet flow. Use a physical TSA-accepted credential and check Apple’s list again before a future trip.

What happens if my Wallet ID is still pending?

A pending state submission is not an approved credential. Use your physical accepted ID until Wallet confirms that enrollment is complete and the credential is ready to present.

What if TSA cannot read my phone or watch?

Follow the officer’s instructions and try the positioning requested by the reader. If the transaction still cannot be completed, switch to your physical TSA-accepted credential rather than repeatedly attempting an unsupported presentation.

Is Apple Wallet Digital ID a REAL ID?

No. Apple says passport-based Digital ID is not a REAL ID document, although participating TSA checkpoints may receive an indicator that it is an acceptable alternative to REAL ID. A noncompliant state license is not made REAL ID-compliant by appearing in Wallet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can Apple Wallet ID replace my passport for international travel?

No conclusion of that kind is established for this feature. The documented use is identity verification at participating U.S. TSA checkpoints for domestic flights. Carry the physical passport and destination-required documents for international travel.

Does TSA store my digital ID?

TSA says digital-identification information is received with the passenger’s consent and is not copied or stored except in limited testing environments described in its digital-identification FAQ. Apple separately describes an encrypted device-to-reader connection and says Apple and the issuing authority do not know when or where the ID is presented.

The Bottom Line

Use Apple Wallet ID only after confirming enrollment and checkpoint eligibility. Present it through the TSA reader, approve the exact request on your iPhone or Apple Watch, and keep a physical TSA-accepted ID—and a physical passport for international trips—available.
