How to Show the First Line on a PDF Page Without Truncation

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the top of the first line is missing, add clearance where the clipping begins: increase the text frame’s top inset or first-baseline offset, add a suitable page top margin, or remove positioning that places content outside the page box. The right fix depends on whether the text is clipped inside its frame, at the PDF page edge, or only when printed.

Find the boundary that is cutting the line

Do not start by changing random margins. Open the PDF at a high zoom and compare the source document, the PDF viewer, and a printed page. Identify the first boundary touched by the missing pixels.

Clipping inside a text frame

If the page still has visible space above the line but the tops of letters are missing, the text layer is probably too tightly fitted. The frame’s top inset, first-baseline policy, or fixed height is the likely cause. A text frame can clip glyphs even though the PDF page has plenty of room.

Adobe describes this behavior for a constrained textPs= layer: aligning the top of the character cell to the text-box edge can let parts of a glyph extend outside that boundary. In that workflow, add space between the glyphs and the frame’s top edge. Adobe’s documented example uses a 10 pt (200 twips) top margin for its particular setup; treat that as an example, not a universal value.

Clipping at the page edge

If the line is positioned at or beyond the physical top of the PDF page, inspect the page’s top margin, negative margins, transforms, and absolute positioning. CSS explains that content outside the page box can be cut by the user agent, printer, or paper cutter. Move the content inside the page box or enlarge the page margin rather than merely enlarging a text frame that is already correctly positioned.

Clipping only on paper

When the PDF looks complete on screen but the printout is not, check the printer’s printable area, the print dialog’s scaling mode, and whether the paper size matches the PDF page size. There is no single printer margin that applies to every model. Compare “Actual size” with a fitted or shrink-to-print option, and print a test page after confirming the document’s page geometry.

Changes after a font or renderer switch

Font ascent, descent, and line-gap metrics affect line-box calculations. A font replacement, operating-system update, browser change, or PDF renderer can therefore alter the amount of clearance needed. Reproduce the file with the intended font embedded and the intended output path before changing layout values permanently.

Fix HTML and CSS generated PDFs

  1. Set a positive top page margin. Use an @page rule with enough room for the first line and any header. Keep the value in the same units as the rest of the print stylesheet.
  2. Remove negative top offsets. Search for negative margin-top, translated elements, or absolute coordinates that place the first block above the page box.
  3. Keep the first block inside the page area. Check the element’s line-height, padding, and font metrics. A line-height that is smaller than the font’s actual glyph box can make the line appear clipped even when the element’s mathematical box fits.
  4. Render again using the production engine. Browser print preview and a server-side converter may calculate page breaks differently. Validate the PDF created by the same engine used in production.
  5. Inspect both screen and paper output. If only printing fails, correct print scaling or the printer’s non-printable area instead of changing the source layout.

A minimal pattern is:

@page {
  size: A4;
  margin: 24mm 18mm 18mm;
}

body {
  margin: 0;
}

.first-line {
  margin-top: 0;
  padding-top: 2mm;
  line-height: 1.25;
}

The values above are starting points for a particular design, not a universal requirement. Measure the actual font and confirm the result in the PDF and on paper.

Fix a layout-document text frame

  1. Increase the top inset. Add a small amount of internal space above the first line without moving the whole frame unnecessarily.
  2. Adjust the first-baseline offset or policy. Baseline placement determines where the first line sits relative to the frame’s top edge. Choose the policy that leaves the glyph’s ascent inside the frame.
  3. Enable height auto-sizing when available. A fixed-height frame can clip the first or last line. Let the frame grow if the authoring format supports it.
  4. Check the frame’s vertical alignment. Top, center, and bottom alignment can produce different first-line positions when the frame height is fixed.
  5. Export with the intended font and PDF settings. Recheck after embedding fonts or changing the export renderer, because metrics can change the line box.

Inset spacing, baseline placement, and auto-sizing are separate controls. Change the one that matches the observed boundary instead of compensating with a large page margin.

Fix an Adobe constrained text layer

For a constrained textPs= layer, leave space between the top of the character cell and the top of the text box. Adobe’s example shows that a 10 pt (200 twips) top margin prevents clipping in the described configuration. Do not copy that number blindly: font, size, leading, layer height, and vertical-alignment settings all matter.

Adobe contrasts textPs= with text=. The latter can shift rendered text as needed to fit inside the specified text box, while textPs= can preserve a tight character-cell alignment that lets glyphs extend beyond the box. If the layer is not required to use the constrained behavior, switching to the fitting behavior may solve the problem; otherwise, increase the top clearance and regenerate the PDF.

Repair an existing PDF when the source is unavailable

Editable text

Use a PDF editor’s content or page-geometry controls to move the text downward or enlarge the top area. Save a new copy, then inspect it at high zoom and print a test page. Exact menu names vary by editor, so identify whether you are changing the text object, the crop/media box, or only an annotation.

Scanned or image-based pages

If the page is an image, there may be no editable text object to move. OCR can create a new text layer, but it does not restore pixels that were never captured. The reliable options are to recreate the page from the original source, add a new margin around the image, or re-scan with the document positioned farther from the scanner edge.

Preserve page-box relationships

PDFs can contain media, crop, trim, bleed, and art boxes. Changing one box without understanding the others can make a page appear correct in one viewer and clipped in another or at print time. Keep the visible content inside the effective page box used by your export and print workflow.

Verification checklist

  • Zoom to at least 200% and confirm the complete ascent of every first-line glyph.
  • Open the PDF in a second viewer to rule out a renderer-specific display issue.
  • Check that the first line is inside the page box, not merely inside a text frame.
  • Print at 100% and with the printer’s fit option, using the correct paper size.
  • Compare output after font substitution, font embedding, or renderer changes.
  • Test pages with uppercase accents, tall ascenders, and characters such as Å, É, and f; these expose insufficient ascent clearance quickly.
  • Keep the smallest successful adjustment documented in the source stylesheet or layout template.

Troubleshooting common symptoms

Only uppercase or accented characters are cut

The frame is likely tight against the font’s ascent. Increase top inset or baseline clearance, and verify the intended font is actually embedded and used.

The whole first line disappears

Look for a page break, an element positioned above the page box, an overflow rule, or a frame whose height is zero or fixed too small. A top margin alone will not repair an element that is outside the page.

The PDF is correct, but paper is not

Confirm paper size and print scaling, then check the printer’s non-printable area. Use a fitted scale or move the design inward if the printer cannot image to the edge.

One viewer clips while another does not

Re-render with the production engine, embed fonts, and inspect page boxes and transparency. A viewer discrepancy is a reason to validate the generated file, not to assume the layout is safe.

Adding margin shifts every page unexpectedly

Page margins change available content height and therefore page breaks. Prefer a text-frame inset or first-baseline adjustment when the problem is confined to one frame; use a page margin only when the page boundary is the cause.

Cost, reliability, and workflow choices

Fix the source when you control the HTML, layout document, or template: it preserves editable text and prevents the defect from returning. Fix the generated PDF only when the source is unavailable or the problem is isolated to a final export. Fix print settings when the screen PDF is complete and the printer is the only failing stage.

For repeatable pipelines, keep the browser or PDF renderer version, fonts, page size, and print CSS pinned. Add a regression page containing tall ascenders and accented capitals, render it after dependency changes, and compare the top edge at high zoom. Capture failures should be treated separately from layout failures: a screenshot or PDF tool can show what rendered, but it cannot repair content positioned outside the source page box.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is there space above the text but the letters are still clipped?

That usually indicates clipping at the text-frame boundary rather than the PDF page edge. Increase the frame’s top inset or first-baseline clearance and regenerate the file.

Should I use a larger page margin or a larger line-height?

Use a page margin when content is outside the page box; use frame inset or baseline controls when the frame clips glyphs. Change line-height only when the line box itself is insufficient.

Can a PDF viewer repair a clipped first line?

A viewer can sometimes display or print with different scaling, but it cannot restore pixels removed during export. Correct the source or recreate the page when the content is genuinely clipped.
