Choose a track-information method that matches your music
The overlay can only be as accurate as the information feeding it. Pick a method based on how the music is played and how you know the track order.

Curated sequence with known track markers
If the stream follows a fixed sequence, a community OBS overlay listing describes taking titles from YouTube chapters and video-description playlists. This can work when those markers match the actual playback order. The listing is third-party community documentation, not an OBS feature guarantee, so verify compatibility with your current setup and test the sequence from beginning to end.

If your music player exposes the current title and artist, an integration can pass that information to a text file or web overlay. Community tools document approaches based on system playback information; support depends on the tool and platform. For example, the Melody Monitor listing specifies Windows. Check the tool’s stated requirements and confirm that it supports your player and OBS version before relying on it.

Audio recognition identifies what it hears
Recognition overlays attempt to identify the audio rather than read a playlist or player. This may suit a mixed or less predictable source, but results can be wrong or missing, especially with quiet, obscure, remixed, or overlapping music. Glitch Studios describes a browser-source workflow and automatic recognition; treat any claims about uptime or accuracy as vendor claims, not independently established performance.
Add the song display to an OBS scene
- Identify the source of truth. Decide whether the title will come from matching chapter or playlist metadata, playback software, or audio recognition. Make sure it reflects the stream’s actual playback order.
- Add the display in OBS. In the scene that carries the lofi stream, add a Browser Source for a web overlay. Alternatively, add a Text Source and enable its text-file input if an integration or script will maintain a current-track file. OBS documents these sources as ways to render a web page or text; a separate component must supply changing song information. See OBS Browser Source and OBS Text Sources.
- Connect the metadata. Configure the overlay, integration, or script to provide the title and artist. For a file-driven setup, point the Text Source to the file that the integration updates. The exact configuration depends on the chosen third-party tool; do not assume every overlay reads the same format or supports the same players.
- Place and preview the label. Position it over the artwork where it will not obscure important details. Preview at the intended output size: a label that looks clear on a desktop preview may be difficult to read at normal viewing size.
- Test real transitions before leaving the stream unattended. Compare the label with the audio over several track changes. Also check what happens after a pause, OBS scene switch, browser refresh, stream restart, or any recovery event relevant to your setup. Confirm that the old title clears or changes rather than remaining on screen as if it were current.
Check music rights separately from song labels
An attribution overlay does not grant permission to broadcast a track. YouTube Help says live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content. If YouTube identifies such content, it may show a placeholder, interrupt the stream, or terminate it if the content remains. YouTube also warns that licensed third-party content can still be interrupted when the rights holder has not added the channel to its allowlist. Establish the necessary streaming rights and, where applicable, ask the rights holder about Content ID allowlisting. See YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams.
