Use the OBS plugin Tuna to show song titles and artist names from a supported music player: configure Tuna to write the metadata to a text file, then add that file as an OBS text source. Tuna can also save cover art for an OBS image source. It reads metadata supplied by the selected player or integration; it does not identify arbitrary audio or automatically fetch details from your YouTube live stream.
The right setup depends on where your radio audio plays. YouTube Music, a VLC source, and a playlist mixed from other players use different Tuna source options, and the available fields depend on what those sources expose.

How the basic Tuna text setup works
Tuna retrieves now-playing information from supported playback sources and writes selected fields to local files. OBS can read a text file in a text source and display its changing contents in a scene. For a simple title-and-artist label, Tuna’s documented format is {artists} - {title}.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute- Install Tuna. Use the project’s current installation instructions and release files. The OBS resource page lists OBS Studio 28.0.0 as its minimum and lists Windows and Linux; that is a stated requirement, not a guarantee of compatibility with every current OBS build or packaging method.
- Choose the music source. Open Tuna from OBS’s Tools menu, then select the source that corresponds to the player carrying your radio audio. The available choices include Spotify, VLC, YouTube Music through the web-browser integration, MPD, MPRIS, Windows Media Control, window title, last.fm, and Icecast. The upstream project also lists browser-player integrations such as SoundCloud, Spotify Web Player, Deezer, Yandex Music, and Pretzel.rocks through a Tampermonkey script. Availability and fields vary by integration.
- Set the output path and format. In Tuna’s settings, specify where the metadata file should be saved and choose the fields and formatting. For a single line with artist followed by title, enter
{artists} - {title}. - Add the file to OBS. In the scene where the radio stream appears, add a text source and enable the option to read from a file. Browse to the output file Tuna maintains. Format, position, and style the text source like any other OBS overlay.
- Test with actual playback. Start a track in the selected player and check that the text changes. If the artist or title is absent, the source may not provide that field; it is not necessarily an OBS display problem.
Choose the Tuna source that matches your radio audio
YouTube Music
For YouTube Music, Tuna’s documented route is to select Web browser as the music source, enable Tuna’s local information webserver, and enable the Tuna plugin in the YouTube Music application. The upstream Tuna repository also lists YouTube Music as a supported source. This concerns playback metadata from YouTube Music—not metadata from a YouTube live stream, and not necessarily an ordinary YouTube video opened in a browser. Exact behavior depends on the selected source and current app integration.

VLC playlist or source
If VLC plays the audio, select VLC in Tuna, refresh or select the relevant scene and VLC source, and add that source in Tuna. The setup guide specifies VLC 3.0.0 or later for this integration and says grouped or otherwise nested VLC sources are not supported in the described setup. VLC may use a local file’s filename as its title; Tuna’s option to remove extensions can help avoid showing suffixes such as .mp3, .wav, or .flac.
Browser players and other sources
For a browser player, use the matching documented Tuna source or integration rather than assuming every browser tab can provide track details. The project lists several browser players supported through a Tampermonkey script; check its current instructions before installing or relying on a script. Other documented source paths include MPD, MPRIS, Windows Media Control, window title, last.fm, and Icecast. A window title or player integration may expose less information than a service with track metadata.

A playlist mixed from multiple sources
If your radio audio comes from a mixer or multiple playback apps, Tuna needs a source that can identify the active player and expose its metadata. It does not infer track names from the combined audio signal. Select and test the actual metadata source, and verify track changes before depending on the label during a live broadcast.

Cover art with an OBS image source
Tuna can save cover art to a file. Configure that output in Tuna, then add an OBS image source pointing to the file. Whether artwork appears depends on the playback source supplying it; a missing image does not prove the image source itself is broken.

Community browser overlay
NowPlayingRevamped-universal is a community overlay option for a more designed browser-source display, including album art, title and artist, a progress bar, animation, and customization. Its documented setup requires OBS, Tuna, Windows Media Control, Windows, and a local web server. The example configures Tuna to save title, first artist, and cover-art files, enables Tuna’s webserver on port 1608, serves the overlay locally, and adds its URL as an OBS Browser Source. Its README gives 500 by 150 as the example browser-source size and says to refresh the source when its scene becomes active. These are instructions for that overlay project, not requirements for Tuna’s basic text-file method.
The overlay’s Windows Media Control source selection can become stale when multiple browser sources play at once: its documentation says it may show whichever source became active most recently and not return to the earlier one until a track-change event.

Compatibility and installation notes
The OBS resource page lists Windows and Linux and gives OBS Studio 28.0.0 as Tuna’s minimum version. On Windows, its installation directions describe running the installer or extracting the data and obs-plugins folders into the OBS installation directory; Tuna should then appear under Tools. For Debian-based Linux, the page offers an installer. Other Linux distributions may require building from source or manual extraction, and the resource cautions that manual installation may not work on every distribution. The page also notes reports of Tuna not loading with Flatpak OBS and limits support for that packaging. Check the current project instructions and release files before installing because plugin compatibility can change.

The Tuna resource page identifies v1.9.11 and was created in 2019; its update history includes a September 12, 2025 entry addressing a crash with a latest beta that removed a deprecated API function. That history indicates compatibility changes have occurred, but does not establish which release is newest today. See the Tuna update history and current installation links for release-specific details.

Troubleshoot missing or incorrect now-playing text
- Tuna is absent from OBS Tools: the plugin may have been installed to the wrong location or failed to load. Check the OBS log and compare the install method with the current Tuna instructions.
- The text file stays blank: confirm that Tuna’s selected source is the player actually playing audio, that the output path is correct, and that playback is active. Then check whether that source supplies the requested metadata.
- Artist, title, or artwork is missing: not every source supplies every field or supports every formatting option. Test with another track or a source known to provide the field before changing the OBS text or image source.
- VLC does not appear or update: confirm VLC is version 3.0.0 or later, and use a VLC source that is not grouped or nested in the documented setup. If the title includes a file extension, try Tuna’s remove-extensions option.
- Browser overlay shows the wrong player: with multiple browser sources playing, Windows Media Control may retain the most recently active source until a track-change event. Test with one active source or use a source-specific integration where available.
- Spotify login or updates fail: the Tuna guide’s troubleshooting mentions checking the current Spotify version, service availability or rate limiting, and login cookies. Authentication behavior can change, so consult current project instructions rather than treating older login steps as guaranteed.
Or let it run in the cloud
Tuna solves the on-screen metadata part of an OBS setup; your own computer still has to run the broadcast. If your goal is a YouTube radio stream that stays live without leaving a PC on, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than going live from a camera.
