To show PowerPoint’s on-screen rulers, open the View tab and select Ruler in the Show group. Clear Ruler to hide them. If the horizontal ruler appears but the vertical ruler does not, use the platform-specific vertical-ruler preference: File > Options > Advanced > Display > Show vertical ruler on Windows, or PowerPoint > Preferences > View > Show vertical ruler on Mac.
The ruler is available only in views that support it. If Ruler is greyed out, switch to Normal view; Microsoft specifically identifies Slide Sorter as a view where the ruler is unavailable.

The Ruler checkbox is the quick visibility switch. The separate Show vertical ruler preference determines whether the left-side ruler is allowed to appear, so it is the setting to check when the horizontal ruler is visible but the vertical one is missing.
Show or hide the ruler in Windows PowerPoint
Show the vertical ruler
- Open the presentation in PowerPoint and go to Normal view. In the ribbon, select View.
- Find the Show group.
- Select the Ruler checkbox. PowerPoint displays the horizontal ruler above the slide and the vertical ruler along its left edge.
This is the fastest way to turn the rulers on for the current editing session. The same checkbox controls the visible ruler display, not a physical measuring tool.
#1 Best Overall
Hide the rulers immediately
- Stay in the editing window and select the View tab.
- In the Show group, clear Ruler.
Both on-screen rulers disappear when the checkbox is cleared. You can select it again whenever you need to align or inspect slide objects.
Keep the vertical ruler hidden on Windows
Use the Advanced display preference when you want the vertical ruler suppressed independently of the ordinary View-tab switch. Microsoft’s instruction is: “To permanently hide the vertical ruler, click File > Options > Advanced, scroll down to the Display section, and clear the Show vertical ruler box.”
- Select File, then Options.
- In PowerPoint Options, choose Advanced.
- Scroll to the Display section.
- Clear Show vertical ruler, then confirm the change with the dialog’s save button.
The preference targets the vertical ruler specifically. If you later need it, return to the same Display section and select Show vertical ruler again, then make sure View > Show > Ruler is selected.

Show or hide the vertical ruler on Mac
Turn the rulers on with the View menu
- Open the presentation in PowerPoint and switch to an editing view that supports rulers, preferably Normal view.
- Choose View from the macOS menu bar.
- Select Ruler. The horizontal and vertical on-screen rulers become visible.
To hide them again, repeat View > Ruler and clear the checkmark.
Make the vertical ruler appear when View > Ruler is enabled
If the View menu indicates that rulers are enabled but the ruler along the slide’s left edge is still absent, check PowerPoint’s vertical-ruler preference:
- Open the PowerPoint application menu.
- Choose Preferences.
- Under Authoring and Proofing Tools, open View.
- Select Show vertical ruler.
- Return to the presentation and verify that View > Ruler is also selected.
The two controls have different jobs: the View command enables the ruler display, while Show vertical ruler allows the vertical portion to be displayed.

Keep the vertical ruler hidden on Mac
- Open PowerPoint > Preferences.
- Under Authoring and Proofing Tools, select View.
- Clear Show vertical ruler.
If the rulers are still visible immediately afterward, clear View > Ruler as well. That removes the currently displayed rulers; the preference prevents the vertical ruler from being shown when rulers are enabled later.

Why the vertical ruler is missing
You are in a view that does not support rulers
The ruler is not available in every PowerPoint view. Microsoft specifically lists Slide Sorter among the views where it is unavailable. In such a view, the Ruler command can be greyed out rather than unchecked.
- Select the View tab.
- Choose Normal view.
- Open the ruler control again and select Ruler.
Normal view is the appropriate place to edit individual slides and use the on-screen rulers. Switching views does not indicate a damaged presentation; it simply changes which editing aids PowerPoint offers.

The View ruler switch is on, but only the horizontal ruler appears
This symptom points to the separate vertical-ruler preference. On Windows, inspect File > Options > Advanced > Display > Show vertical ruler. On Mac, inspect PowerPoint > Preferences > View > Show vertical ruler. Select that option, then confirm that the ordinary Ruler command remains enabled.
The Ruler command is greyed out
First change to Normal view. The ruler control is unavailable in views such as Slide Sorter, so changing a preference cannot make it active there. Once Normal view is active, select Ruler from the View tab on Windows or the View menu on Mac.

Leave the general ruler display enabled, then clear only Show vertical ruler in the platform’s preference. Windows users find that option under File > Options > Advanced > Display; Mac users find it under PowerPoint > Preferences > View. This combination leaves the top ruler available while suppressing the ruler at the slide’s left edge.
You want both rulers hidden
Clear the general Ruler option in the View controls. That is the immediate switch for hiding the on-screen rulers. If the vertical ruler should also remain disabled as a preference, clear Show vertical ruler in the corresponding Windows or Mac settings described above.

PowerPoint exposes two related controls because they solve different problems:
- View > Show > Ruler on Windows, or View > Ruler on Mac, is the direct display toggle. Use it when you need the rulers while working on a slide or want them out of the way.
- Show vertical ruler is the dedicated vertical-ruler preference. Use it when the left-side ruler should stay hidden or should be allowed to appear whenever ruler display is enabled.
- Normal view is the reliable working context for these controls. In unsupported views, the command can be unavailable regardless of the preference.
If the result does not match what you selected, check both controls in order: choose a supported view, enable the general ruler display, and then verify the vertical-ruler preference.

The vertical ruler is an on-screen alignment aid rather than a separate measuring device. It runs along the left edge of the active slide, while the horizontal ruler runs across the top. With both visible, you can inspect the position of slide objects in two directions while editing.
Use it when placing objects
- Switch to Normal view.
- Select View > Ruler (or the Windows View > Show > Ruler control).
- Use the top ruler to judge horizontal placement and the left ruler to judge vertical placement as you position text boxes, images, shapes, or other slide elements.
- Hide the rulers again when you need more unobstructed workspace.
Because the ruler is part of PowerPoint’s editing interface, changing its visibility does not alter the slide, resize an object, or print a physical measurement. It only changes the guides shown around the active slide.
A quick troubleshooting checklist
- Ruler is greyed out: switch from the current view to Normal.
- No rulers are visible: enable Ruler from the View controls.
- Horizontal ruler is visible but vertical ruler is not: enable Show vertical ruler in the Windows Advanced > Display settings or the Mac Preferences > View settings.
- You hid the vertical ruler intentionally and now need it: reverse that preference, then turn on the general Ruler display.
- You are trying this in Slide Sorter: return to Normal view before changing the ruler setting.
- You only need a cleaner canvas: clear the general Ruler option rather than changing the persistent vertical-ruler preference.
These checks distinguish a view limitation from a display preference and from the ordinary ruler toggle, which are the three settings that determine whether the vertical ruler can be seen.
