How to Show Now-Playing Titles During a Server-Run YouTube Playlist Livestream

To show the current song or video title, your setup must get the playing item’s title from the playlist player, pass that value to an overlay, and composite the overlay into the stream sent to YouTube. A server running a playlist does not automatically provide a now-playing label, and YouTube’s Live Streaming API reference does not document a feature that adds one.

How the now-playing title reaches your livestream

Think of the feature as three separate parts:

  1. Playback state: A player or scheduler knows which playlist item is playing.
  2. Title data: The current item’s title is read from playback state or, for a tracklist-based approach, inferred from chapters or a video description.
  3. Overlay and output: The title is rendered visually and included in the video scene that goes to YouTube.

The YouTube Live Streaming API covers managing broadcasts and stream resources; its overview does not describe a current-playlist-item overlay function. Keep broadcast management separate from the player and overlay that supply the title. YouTube Live Streaming API reference

For a server deployment, establish where current-item state originates, how the overlay receives it, and whether the player and browser-source environment work in that specific setup. The cited examples do not establish a single supported end-to-end method for unattended server-run YouTube playlists.

Choose an approach based on where the title comes from

Read chapters or a description tracklist

The OBS Forums community resource “Music on stream” describes overlay inputs that use YouTube chapters or a playlist in a video description. This may suit a video whose tracklist metadata is already organized in one of those formats. It is a third-party resource, not official YouTube functionality or an independently verified compatibility result. The listing says it was created April 12, 2024, and last updated September 18, 2025. Music on stream (OBS Forums)

Use a playlist player with a title display

The GitHub project OBS-Youtube-Player describes playing a YouTube playlist in an OBS browser source, with an optional current song name and author display. Its project description is an example of the kind of integrated player-and-display approach to investigate; ongoing maintenance and current compatibility were not verified. Do not assume OBS’s media playlist is a YouTube playlist

OBS’s built-in media-source playlist controls apply to media files handled by OBS. Their documentation does not establish that those controls play or expose the current title of a YouTube-hosted playlist. OBS Media Sources

Set up and verify the data path

Exact menus and configuration depend on the player and overlay you choose. Use these checks rather than assuming a particular plugin or server protocol is supported:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Identify the actual playlist player. Confirm which process plays or schedules the YouTube playlist, and whether it runs on the server, in OBS, or in a browser source. A server-hosted playlist and a local OBS media playlist are not automatically the same thing.
  2. Confirm how it knows the current item. Determine whether the selected tool reads the player’s current-item state or parses chapters or a description tracklist. A chapter-based method needs suitable chapter metadata; a description-based method needs a tracklist the tool can interpret.
  3. Connect the title value to the renderer. A browser source can display web content in OBS. Depending on the design, the title may need to be made available to that page through a local endpoint or another state-sharing method. The cited material does not verify a particular endpoint protocol for this exact setup.
  4. Add the renderer to the outgoing scene. Make sure the scene containing the overlay is the scene actually sent to YouTube, and that the text remains legible at the stream’s output resolution.
  5. Test transitions before relying on unattended playback. In a private test stream, check that the label changes between playlist items and behaves sensibly with long titles, pauses, reconnects, and playlist transitions. Also confirm what the overlay shows if title data is unavailable.

What to compare before choosing a tool

The two third-party examples have different described capabilities. Their descriptions do not establish headless-server compatibility or reliability, so check these points in your own environment:

Keep playlist titles separate from HLS segments

YouTube’s HLS guidance concerns livestream ingestion and transport using media segments. An HLS segment playlist is not a playlist of YouTube videos, and HLS setup guidance does not supply the current video title for an overlay. YouTube Help: Set up an HLS stream

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is an always-on prerecorded YouTube stream rather than a server you maintain, StreamNeo is a cloud service for uploaded videos and playlists. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud keeps the stream running without a computer or home connection staying on. It supports uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams to YouTube and does not go live from a camera. A now-playing overlay still depends on a suitable source of title metadata and renderer; cloud streaming alone does not add one. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
