In Microsoft Edge, open Settings and more (…) > Settings > Appearance > Toolbar, then use the Favorites bar menu. Choose Always to keep it visible, Never to hide it, or Only on new tabs to show it on a new-tab page but not while viewing other pages. You can also press Ctrl+Shift+B on Windows or Command+Shift+B on Mac to toggle the bar.
Quick answer: the three ways to display the Favorites bar
Microsoft Edge calls its bookmark strip the Favorites bar. The visibility control is located at Settings and more (…) > Settings > Appearance > Toolbar > Favorites bar. It offers three modes:

These are display choices for the same Favorites collection. Switching between them does not create, delete, or move your saved favorites.

How to change the Favorites bar setting from Edge’s menus
The following procedure is the current Microsoft-supported path for Edge on Windows and Mac. The wording or placement can change in a future Edge release, but the control is under the Appearance section when the browser uses the current layout.

- Open Microsoft Edge.
- Select Settings and more (…) in the upper-right corner of the browser window.
- Select Settings from the menu.
- In the Settings sidebar, select Appearance.
- Scroll to Other appearance settings, then select Toolbar if that section is collapsed or presented as a separate control.
- Find Favorites bar.
- Open its visibility menu and select Always, Never, or Only on new tabs.
The change is a browser-interface preference, so you do not need to edit a Favorites folder or recreate any saved links. Open a new tab or navigate to another page afterward to confirm that the selected mode behaves as expected.
What each visibility mode does in practice
Always: persistent one-click access
Select Always when the Favorites bar is part of your everyday navigation. It stays in the browser chrome while you move between websites, making saved links available without opening a separate favorites panel or menu. This is useful for frequently visited workspaces, webmail, documentation, calendars, or other sites you intentionally keep close at hand.
The trade-off is visual space. A permanently displayed strip occupies part of the browser interface, so the page area can feel more crowded, especially on a smaller laptop display. The mode changes only visibility; it does not alter the names, folders, order, or contents of your favorites.

Select Never when you want the Favorites bar removed from the interface. This is the appropriate choice if you rarely use saved links, prefer to reclaim the strip’s space, or do not want bookmark labels visible while presenting or sharing your screen.
Hiding the bar does not remove your favorites. Your saved items remain available through Edge’s other favorites interfaces. If you later choose Always or Only on new tabs, the same collection can appear again.
Only on new tabs: access at the start, less clutter afterward
Select Only on new tabs when you want the bar at the beginning of a browsing session but not while reading or working inside a site. Microsoft describes this mode as showing the Favorites bar on a new-tab page and hiding it on other pages.

This option is a compromise rather than a separate favorites collection. The same saved links are displayed when Edge is showing a new-tab page; navigating to a website hides the strip. Opening another new tab brings the strip back, subject to the new-tab page and browser window you are using.

Use the keyboard shortcut to show or hide it
Edge’s official shortcut reference lists a direct toggle:
- Windows: press Ctrl+Shift+B.
- Mac: press Command+Shift+B.
The shortcut is labeled “Show or hide the favorites bar.” It switches the bar’s visible state without requiring you to open Settings. Use it when you need a quick temporary change, such as removing the strip while working in a page or bringing it back when you need a saved link.
If the result is not what you expected, return to Settings > Appearance > Toolbar > Favorites bar and inspect the selected mode. A shortcut toggle can be convenient for an immediate show-or-hide action, while the menu makes the intended ongoing setting explicit.
Windows and Mac coverage
Microsoft’s hide-and-show guidance covers Microsoft Edge on Mac, Windows 10, and Windows 11. The menu path is the same in principle on those platforms: open the upper-right Settings and more (…) menu, enter Settings, choose Appearance, and then locate the Favorites bar control under the toolbar-related appearance settings.
The keyboard modifier differs by platform. Use Ctrl on Windows and Command on Mac. If a Mac keyboard or system utility intercepts the shortcut, use the Settings path instead; the menu option is the authoritative place to choose among all three visibility modes.

How to choose the right setting
Decide based on where you want the strip to appear, not on how many favorites you have. The setting does not sort or filter saved links.
- Choose Always if you open favorites repeatedly during normal navigation and the persistent strip saves time.
- Choose Never if the bar is unused or its permanent presence makes the browser feel crowded.
- Choose Only on new tabs if you want a launch point for saved sites but prefer more room once a page is open.
There is no universally correct choice. A person who uses a large monitor may find the permanent strip unobtrusive, while someone on a compact display may prefer the new-tab-only behavior. You can change the setting whenever your workflow changes; the saved collection is unaffected.
What “customize” means in this setting
For this Edge control, customization means selecting when the Favorites bar is visible. The three choices control placement in the browser interface:

Do not interpret Only on new tabs as a mode that copies favorites into a special new-tab folder. It simply changes where the existing bar is rendered.
If the Favorites bar does not appear after you select a mode
Work through the checks below in order. They address the common situation in which the selected option and the visible browser state do not seem to match.
1. Confirm the exact control you changed
Return to Settings and more (…) > Settings > Appearance. Under Other appearance settings, open Toolbar and verify that you changed Favorites bar, not a different toolbar or button setting. The three expected values are Always, Never, and Only on new tabs.

2. Test on the page type that matches your choice
If you selected Only on new tabs, open a genuinely new tab and check there. Then navigate to a website; the bar should be hidden on that page. Testing only on a website can make a correctly configured new-tab-only setting look as though it failed.
3. Reopen the browser window
Close and reopen Edge after changing the setting. This is a practical refresh step if the interface did not redraw immediately. Recheck the selected value after Edge starts again.
4. Update Edge if the interface looks different
Microsoft’s documented path reflects the current support interface, but labels and layout can differ between releases. If you cannot find Appearance, Toolbar, or Favorites bar, update Edge through its built-in browser update controls and then look for the same Appearance and toolbar categories. Do not assume a missing label means that your favorites were deleted.
5. Use the platform shortcut as a quick test
Press the shortcut for your platform once, then inspect the browser chrome. On Windows it is Ctrl+Shift+B; on Mac it is Command+Shift+B. If the shortcut changes the bar but the menu still shows an unexpected mode, use the menu to set the desired persistent behavior.

Use this short verification checklist after making a change:

- Open the Favorites bar setting and note whether it says Always, Never, or Only on new tabs.
- With Always, navigate between several pages and confirm that the strip remains present.
- With Never, open a new tab and a normal website; the strip should remain hidden in both places.
- With Only on new tabs, open a new tab, confirm the strip is shown, then navigate away and confirm it is hidden.
- If the observed behavior differs, repeat the troubleshooting steps rather than changing individual favorites.
This test distinguishes a visibility-setting issue from a problem with a particular saved link. The setting controls the bar itself; it does not validate whether each favorite opens correctly.
Important distinctions before you change the setting
Hiding is not deleting
Selecting Never removes the strip from view but does not erase saved websites. You can later restore the strip with the Settings menu or the keyboard toggle.
Visibility is not organization
The Favorites bar setting does not rename, reorder, move, or categorize favorites. If your goal is to reorganize saved links, that is a different task from choosing when the bar appears.
The new-tab option is not a temporary overlay
Only on new tabs is an ongoing preference. It applies whenever Edge displays a new-tab page and hides the bar when you leave that page. It is not a one-time display that disappears permanently after a single tab.

These instructions apply to Microsoft Edge. A different browser may use another name, menu path, or shortcut, so do not use another application’s bookmark instructions to diagnose Edge’s Favorites bar.
Recommended default for most workflows
If you are unsure, start with Only on new tabs. It provides access to saved links at the point where many people decide what to open next, while keeping the bar out of the way during ordinary page navigation. Change to Always when you repeatedly need favorites inside open pages, or to Never when you do not use the strip at all.
Whichever mode you choose, the decisive setting remains Settings > Appearance > Toolbar > Favorites bar. The Windows and Mac shortcuts provide a faster toggle, and the menu remains the place to confirm the exact visibility mode.
