What you need
- OBS Studio to send the livestream to YouTube.
- VLC media player installed on the same computer. OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC; with 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC.
- Gameplay video files that you have permission to rebroadcast.
- A YouTube stream set up in YouTube Studio, plus its stream URL and stream key.
Build a rotating VOD playlist in OBS
- Install VLC, matching its architecture to OBS. Open OBS and add a source to the scene where you want the video to appear.
- Choose VLC Video as the source. If that option is missing, check that VLC is installed and matches OBS’s 64-bit or 32-bit version.
- In the source properties, add the gameplay recordings to the playlist. OBS can play multiple media files through this source. Arrange them in the order you want if the sequence matters.
- Enable Loop Playlist to restart the playlist after its last file. Enable Shuffle Playlist to randomize playback order. These are separate controls: choose either, both, or neither according to how you want the recordings to play.
- Check the VLC source’s behavior when its scene is hidden. OBS provides options that can stop, pause, or continue playback while hidden; select the behavior that fits how you use scenes.
- Preview the scene and verify that the video and audio play as expected before connecting to YouTube.
Set the game title and category on YouTube
In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or select the stream and set its title and type/category. YouTube advises choosing the type that fits the content, such as Gaming, to reach the relevant audience. You can edit stream settings during setup or from the stream settings page. See YouTube’s live-stream settings guidance.
The playlist and the YouTube metadata are separate controls. The documented OBS playlist options play, loop, and shuffle files; they do not establish that YouTube’s displayed game or title changes automatically as the playlist advances. If the VODs cover different games, keep the metadata accurate for the stream and change it manually when appropriate. Do not assume a plugin, API, or other automation will update each item unless you have separately verified that it does.
Connect OBS to YouTube and go live
- In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, prepare the stream and locate its stream URL and stream key.
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter the connection details. Follow YouTube’s current encoder instructions if the setup screen or labels differ: Connect your encoder to YouTube.
- Start streaming from OBS, then check the YouTube preview and stream details before making the stream public or going live.
- Once live, monitor the playlist and the displayed title/category. If the game changes, update the YouTube metadata yourself as needed; advancing the OBS playlist alone does not do it.
Keep an archive of the stream
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived and recommends keeping a local backup. A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you need a reliable copy, start a local recording in OBS and confirm it is being saved before relying on YouTube’s archive: YouTube guidance on archiving live streams.
