Keep the YouTube livestream title stable and descriptive, then show the episode currently playing with an on-screen “Now Playing” label driven by your playout system’s current-item metadata. YouTube’s broadcast title describes the broadcast (one YouTube video); its documentation does not describe it as a changing label for each episode in one continuous stream. YouTube Live Streaming API
Keep the broadcast title separate from the episode name
Use the YouTube title and description to identify the overall live event or channel, and use an overlay within the video picture to identify the story episode currently playing. Changing the broadcast title is not the documented mechanism for naming each file in a rotating playlist: YouTube’s API describes a title field for the broadcast, and each broadcast represents one YouTube video. YouTube Live Streaming API
A viewer who joins mid-episode can then see which story is on without needing the stream’s overall title to change. The episode label must receive the current item’s title from the playout or overlay system; a static graphic by itself will not follow a playlist automatically.
Prepare episode names in the media library
- Choose a clear, consistent name for every episode. Use the actual episode title rather than an internal production label where possible.
- Check the title metadata in the media library or playlist. The overlay can only display the title supplied by the library. If the title metadata is missing, the system may display a filename instead. Correct incomplete or untidy metadata before relying on automatic updates. Playout.video overlay guide
- Test the longest title. Decide how long names should wrap, truncate, or fit on screen, and adjust the graphic so viewers can still read the essential words.
Choose how the episode label reaches viewers
| Approach | What it does | Check before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| Stable YouTube broadcast title | Names the overall broadcast/video. The API does not establish it as an automatically changing per-episode label within one continuous show. | Use it for the live event or channel identity, not as the sole indicator of the current story. YouTube Live Streaming API |
| Automated Now Playing overlay | Playout.video documents an overlay that displays the current video or track title, updates as content rotates, and can be shown persistently or at transitions. | Confirm the tool can read your library’s metadata and integrate with your actual stream composition. Its documented behavior does not establish compatibility with every setup. Playout.video overlay guide |
| OBS 24/7 Playout workflow | The repository describes continuous playlist or rundown playback and a Now/Next display with progress and upcoming-video information. | Check operating-system and stream-destination compatibility, maintenance status, setup complexity, and whether the display can be placed where viewers need it. The repository description does not resolve all compatibility questions. 24/7 Playout for OBS repository |
| Manually updated graphic | A person changes the episode name in the scene when the story changes; this is not an automated solution. | Consider operator workload and the risk of leaving the previous episode name visible. |
Playout.video’s guide, dated July 9, 2026, says its Now Playing overlay shows the title of the currently playing track or video and updates as content rotates. That is the product’s feature description, not an independent evaluation or a guarantee that it will work with every playout stack. Playout.video overlay guide

Set up and verify a Now Playing label
- Select a playout or overlay system that can expose the currently playing item’s title. Before committing to a workflow, verify that it reads your metadata format and can pass the current title into the scene that reaches your stream.
- Add a compact title element to the stream composition. Keep it away from important story artwork and on-screen text.
- Check readability on real frames. Preview the label against bright, detailed, and visually busy scenes. Add a background bar or adjust contrast if the words blend into the image. Review the longest episode title for overflow, clipping, or awkward wrapping. Playout.video overlay guide
- Choose when the label appears. Keep it visible throughout the episode if late joiners should be able to identify the story at any time; show it only at transitions if minimizing the area covered by text matters more. The overlay guide documents both always-visible and transition-only behavior. Playout.video overlay guide
- Run a complete episode transition. Confirm the outgoing title disappears, the next title is correct, and the change reaches the actual stream output—not just the editor preview.
Keep captions separate from episode titles
A Now Playing label identifies the episode; it does not caption dialogue or narration. YouTube’s live-caption guidance describes captions as a visual representation of audio and documents delivery through embedded captions or supported software. Its instructions also specify one caption feed per stream entry point. Configure captions separately when needed, and confirm that the chosen caption method suits the stream setup. Children’s-channel settings still need their own review
YouTube’s Live Streaming API includes a selfDeclaredMadeForKids field that can be set when inserting a broadcast, and a madeForKids field indicating a child-directed designation. Use YouTube’s current audience settings and applicable guidance to classify your content; the presence of these API fields does not determine how a particular channel should be classified. Troubleshoot titles that do not change or display cleanly
- The overlay shows a filename or an unhelpful label: add or correct the episode title in the media library metadata, then test playback again.
- The old title remains after a story changes: verify that the playout system reports the new current item and that the overlay is connected to that source. Confirm the change in the stream output.
- The title is clipped, wraps badly, or disappears into the artwork: preview the longest name and representative bright or busy frames; adjust text size, placement, contrast, or its background bar.
- The title appears only at the wrong time: check whether the overlay is configured for persistent display or transition-only display, then preview an entire handoff.
- The overlay does not integrate with your setup: compatibility is not established across all tools. Check the documentation for your specific playout software, operating system, and stream composition before relying on the integration.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the stream itself is the part you want to take off a home computer, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos in the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. For episode names, prepare accurate titles in the playlist or media metadata and verify how your chosen overlay receives them; StreamNeo’s documented role is cloud looping, not a camera feed or an episode-title overlay.

- Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot.
- Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
