How to Show All Tray Icons in Windows 11

To show more tray icons in Windows 11, right-click an empty part of the taskbar, select Taskbar settings, expand System tray icons and Other system tray icons, then turn on the icons you want. To place a currently hidden app icon beside the clock, open the hidden-icons overflow area and drag the icon onto the visible system tray.

Windows 11 does not provide a Microsoft-documented master switch that reveals every third-party tray icon. An application must be running and must provide a tray icon before Windows can display it.

What the Windows 11 system tray controls

The system tray is the right end of the taskbar, beside the clock. It displays Windows notifications and icons supplied by running applications. Windows divides the controls into two settings groups, while the taskbar itself has two display locations:

  • System tray icons: Windows features such as the pen menu, touch keyboard and virtual touchpad, when those options are available on your device.
  • Other system tray icons: application icons that Windows can show in the tray or place in the overflow area.
  • Visible system tray: the icons shown directly beside the clock.
  • Overflow area: the hidden-icons panel opened from the control near the clock.

An icon can be enabled in Settings and still appear in overflow rather than beside the clock. Placement is controlled separately by dragging the icon between those two areas.

Turn on the icons Windows knows about

  1. Right-click an empty area of the taskbar. Avoid right-clicking an individual icon, because that opens the application’s own menu.

  2. Select Taskbar settings. The Windows Settings app opens to the taskbar options.

  3. Expand System tray icons. Turn on each Windows feature you want visible, such as the pen menu, touch keyboard or virtual touchpad when that option is offered on your system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  4. Expand Other system tray icons. Switch on the applications you want Windows to allow in the tray.

  5. Close Settings and check the area beside the clock. Enabled icons may be visible immediately or may be placed in the overflow area, depending on the available tray space and the application’s behavior.

The two groups are independent. Enabling a Windows feature under System tray icons does not enable an application listed under Other system tray icons, and changing an application toggle does not turn on Windows features.

Move a hidden icon next to the clock

Settings controls whether an application icon is allowed, but drag-and-drop controls its location. Use this procedure when an icon is enabled yet remains behind the hidden-icons control.

  1. Select the hidden-icons or overflow control near the clock to open the panel of icons that are not currently visible in the tray.

  2. Point to the icon you want to keep visible. Press and hold the mouse button.

  3. Drag the icon out of the overflow panel and onto the visible system tray beside the clock.

  4. Release the mouse button when the icon is positioned among the visible tray icons. Windows keeps it in that location while the application continues to provide the icon.

To hide an icon again, drag it from the visible tray back into the overflow area. The same drag-and-drop operation works in both directions; it is not a one-way “show” command.

Use the keyboard to reach hidden icons

If you prefer not to use a mouse, Microsoft documents Windows key+B for reaching Show hidden icons. Press the Windows key and B together, then use the keyboard focus to open the hidden-icons control and navigate to an icon. The exact focus indicator can vary with keyboard navigation settings, so use the arrow keys and Enter when the overflow control is selected.

Keyboard access does not change which icons are enabled or where they are stored. It is an alternative way to reach the overflow area; moving an icon into the visible tray still requires the drag-and-drop interaction documented for the taskbar.

Why an icon can still be missing

Windows settings cannot manufacture a tray icon. The application has to be running and designed to expose one. Check these cases before changing more taskbar options.

The application is not running

If an application has been closed, its icon may disappear from both the visible tray and overflow. Start the application again and wait for its background component to load. If the icon returns, Windows was not hiding it; there was no running process supplying it.

The application does not provide a tray icon

Some applications have a taskbar window or background service but no notification-area icon. Such software cannot be added through Other system tray icons. The list only controls apps that expose a tray icon to Windows.

The application is enabled but in overflow

Open the overflow area rather than looking only beside the clock. If the icon is there, drag it onto the visible tray. This is the normal result when the icon is allowed but not assigned a visible position.

The relevant Windows feature is unavailable

The System tray icons list is conditional. A pen menu, touch keyboard or virtual touchpad option may be absent when the device or its current configuration does not support that feature. Do not treat a missing toggle as a hidden icon problem; there is no setting to enable a control that Windows does not offer for that device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The icon changes after the application restarts

Tray placement belongs to the running icon. If an application exits, updates, or starts a different background component, its icon can disappear temporarily and return later. Check whether the program is running before assuming that Windows reset the setting.

Settings toggles and overflow dragging compared

Method What it controls Where the result appears Input Limit
System tray icons toggle Windows features such as pen menu, touch keyboard or virtual touchpad when offered Visible tray or overflow, depending on placement Settings toggle Only features listed for the device can be enabled
Other system tray icons toggle Whether listed application icons are allowed Visible tray or overflow Settings toggle Cannot create an icon that the application does not provide
Overflow drag-and-drop The location of an already available icon Moves between overflow and visible tray Mouse drag Requires the icon to be present and running
Windows key+B Keyboard access to Show hidden icons Opens or focuses the overflow control Keyboard Does not itself enable an icon or change its placement

This distinction explains why turning on every available toggle may not produce a row containing every icon beside the clock. Permission and placement are separate decisions, and application behavior remains outside Windows’ controls.

How to keep frequently used icons visible

Use a simple two-stage routine for icons you check often:

  1. Enable the application under Other system tray icons.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  2. Open overflow and drag the icon onto the visible tray.

    • Simply Wireless: Forget about drop-outs and delays thanks to a strong, reliable wireless connection with up to 33 ft range (5); K270 is compatible with Windows 7, 8, 10 or later
  3. Leave less frequently used icons in overflow so the visible area remains easy to scan.

For example, you might keep a communication or security indicator beside the clock while leaving occasional utilities in overflow. Windows does not document a numeric limit or a universal “show every icon” setting; the practical choice is which enabled icons deserve a permanent visible position.

If you want every icon visible at all times

You can place each available icon in the visible tray one at a time, but “every icon” has two important qualifications. First, only icons listed by Windows and supplied by running applications can be moved. Second, an application can remove its icon when it closes or can decline to provide one at all.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Therefore, the reliable interpretation of “always show every icon” is: enable every listed item, then move each currently available icon from overflow to the visible tray. It is not a guarantee that all installed applications will appear there permanently.

A practical troubleshooting checklist

  • Taskbar settings cannot be found: right-click an empty part of the taskbar, not an icon, and choose Taskbar settings.
  • A Windows feature is absent: check whether your device offers that feature; the list is not identical on every system.
  • An app is listed but unseen: turn on its Other system tray icons switch, then inspect overflow.
  • An app is in overflow: drag it onto the visible tray beside the clock.
  • An app is nowhere: start it and confirm that it actually supplies a tray icon.
  • You need keyboard access: press Windows key+B to reach Show hidden icons.
  • The icon vanishes after exit: restart the application; Windows cannot display an icon while its provider is not running.

The short answer

Windows 11 has no single Microsoft-documented command to reveal every third-party tray icon. Use Taskbar settings to enable the Windows and application icons that are offered, use the overflow control to find enabled icons, and drag each one onto the visible tray when you want it beside the clock. If an application is not running or does not expose a tray icon, no Windows setting can add it.
