In OBS, play the playlist with a VLC Video source, then place a Text source above it and have that source read the current title from a text file. Update the file manually at track changes or use a separate metadata process you have verified. This displays a title card, but OBS’s documented sources do not provide a universal automatic connection between every VLC playlist item and the Text source.
Set up the playlist and title card in OBS
- Install VLC and add the playlist. In OBS, create or select a scene, add a VLC Video source, and supply the media items in the order you want. VLC must be installed; with 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. The source supports playlists and looping. OBS VLC Video source documentation.
- Add a file-backed title. Add a Text source and move it above the VLC source in the Sources list so it appears over the video. Enable Read from file, then choose a text file containing the title you want shown. OBS’s text-source options are documented in its Text Sources guide.
- Choose how titles change. For a short or fixed playlist, edit the text file when the item changes. For automatic updates, use a separate metadata process that works with your playback source and writes the current title into the file. Test that the process changes the displayed text at the right time; VLC playlist metadata is not documented as automatically filling an OBS Text source.
- Style the card if needed. Add an image source for a background or graphic, or use a Browser source for a web overlay. Keep the title legible against the video and ensure the image or browser layer sits in the intended order relative to the text. Browser overlays offer more layout flexibility, but rely on the overlay page and its data connection.
- Check the whole scene. Preview the playlist, title changes, audio, and movement. Confirm the title is not obscured by another source and remains readable on both bright and dark footage. OBS’s source documentation covers scene sources and layering.
Configure YouTube and OBS for 4K at 60 fps
Create or select the stream in YouTube Live Control Room, then configure OBS as the encoder. YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, CBR encoding, and a two-second keyframe interval; the keyframe interval should not exceed four seconds. It lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video and frame rates up to 60 fps. Use settings supported by your OBS version and encoder, and test them before the broadcast. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and encoder setup guidance.

These are YouTube’s published encoder-setting figures, accessed in 2026—not a guarantee that a specific computer or connection can sustain the stream. Choose a bitrate your upload connection can maintain consistently and test the complete scene, not just a static screen. YouTube does not offer its low-latency optimization for 4K live streams; 4K streams use normal latency.

- Play through the playlist and verify that the intended items and order are correct.
- Confirm the title file displays the right text and, if automated, updates at each track change.
- Listen for audio problems and check that movement remains smooth at 60 fps.
- Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators during a test, especially after setting the target resolution and bitrate.
- Check the stream key and destination in YouTube Live Control Room before starting the encoder.
Troubleshoot common problems
The VLC source does not play
Confirm VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. Check that the source points to the intended playlist or media files and that they are accessible.

The title is hidden or appears behind the video
Move the Text source above the VLC source in the Sources list. If it is still hard to read, adjust the text styling or add a contrasting image background.
The title does not change with the playlist
A text source reading a file displays the file’s contents; it does not, by itself, establish a link to VLC’s current playlist item. Update the file manually or troubleshoot the separate metadata process that writes it. Verify the file changes and that OBS reflects the new contents.

The stream drops frames or cannot sustain the selected bitrate
Check the connection and encoder load, then test a lower bitrate or resolution that your system and upload connection can maintain. YouTube’s recommended 4K60 bitrate is codec-specific; it is not a substitute for testing your actual setup.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the playlist is for an always-on YouTube channel rather than a one-off OBS production, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live.
