How to Show a Logo and Ticker Over a VLC Playlist on YouTube Live

Use OBS Studio to combine the playlist and overlays, then send the finished scene to YouTube Live. Add the playlist as an OBS VLC Video source, place an Image source for the logo and a Text or Browser source for the ticker above it, and stream OBS using your YouTube stream URL and key.

What you need

  • OBS Studio to compose and broadcast the scene.
  • VLC Media Player installed on the same computer. OBS’s VLC Video source depends on VLC; if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
  • Your playlist files, a logo image, and ticker text. Use a Browser source instead of Text if the ticker needs animation or comes from a web page.
  • A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled, plus a reliable upload connection appropriate for the stream resolution.

Build the playlist-and-overlay scene in OBS

  1. Add the playlist: In OBS, select the scene you plan to broadcast. In the Sources box, select + and choose VLC Video. Name the source, confirm, then add the video files to its playlist. Use this source for a playlist. For a single supported local file, OBS Media Source is an alternative; its documented formats include MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF and WebM video, and MP3, AAC, OGG and WAV audio. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
  2. Add the logo: Select + in Sources and choose Image. Browse to the logo file and confirm. Drag its corners in the preview to size it, then drag it into position.
  3. Add the ticker: For a simple static text line, add a Text source and enter the wording. If you need a moving ticker or content supplied by a web page, add a Browser source and configure it to display that page. Adjust the source’s size and position in the preview.
  4. Set the layer order: In the Sources list, put the logo and ticker above the VLC Video source. OBS displays sources higher in the list over sources below them. Use the visibility icons to confirm that each source is enabled. The OBS Sources Guide explains source layering.
  5. Check the scene: Play the playlist and confirm the video, logo, ticker and audio appear as intended. If something is covered, reposition or resize it, or move its source higher in the list.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create a stream or select one, then copy the stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s guide to creating a live stream with an encoder describes this workflow.
  2. In OBS, open Settings → Stream. Choose the YouTube service and enter the stream key, or configure the server and key as appropriate for the selected service. Treat the key like a password: do not show it on screen or share it.
  3. Open Settings → Output and choose a streaming bitrate and encoder settings that fit your output resolution and dependable upload capacity. YouTube recommends RTMPS, CBR, and a 2-second keyframe interval; do not exceed 4 seconds. Encoder options listed by YouTube include H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1, with frame rates up to 60 fps. Consult YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions for the exact target you intend to use.
  4. For a specific reference point, YouTube lists H.264 at 1080p30 with a 5 Mbps minimum and 10 Mbps recommended ingest bitrate. These are YouTube’s published recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular connection will sustain the stream; test and monitor stream health. The same guidance lists AAC or MP3 stereo audio and 128 Kbps as the advanced audio setting.
  5. In OBS, select Start Streaming. Check the YouTube preview before the broadcast: verify playlist playback, logo and ticker placement, audio, and stream health. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring the feed; see its live stream settings and live streaming tips.

Check YouTube live access and content rights

YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days to live stream. Check access in YouTube Studio before scheduling a broadcast. A playlist being technically playable does not establish that you have permission to rebroadcast its music, video or other material; use content you own or are authorized to use, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright rules before going live.

Alternative: add a logo inside VLC

VLC has a logo overlay effect at Tools → Effects and Filters → Video Effects → Overlay, where you can select an image and adjust position and opacity. VideoLAN also documents command-line logo options in its logo instructions. This places a logo on VLC’s video output, but OBS is the more direct choice when you need to arrange a separate ticker and logo over a playlist as independent layers.

Troubleshooting

  • VLC Video is missing from the Sources menu: Install VLC and ensure its architecture matches OBS. For 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC.
  • The playlist plays, but the logo or ticker is not visible: Confirm the source is enabled, move it above VLC Video in the Sources list, and check whether it is positioned outside the canvas or covered by another source.
  • YouTube does not receive the OBS feed: Recheck the stream URL and key in YouTube Live Control Room and OBS. Keep the key private.
  • The stream health is poor or the feed drops: Check OBS’s connection and YouTube’s stream-health status. Reduce the bitrate or output resolution if your upload connection cannot sustain the chosen settings, and test again before the broadcast.
  • The ticker is static when you expected it to scroll: A Text source displays text; use a Browser source connected to a page that provides the animation, and verify that the page renders in OBS.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a YouTube channel that keeps prerecorded videos live around the clock, StreamNeo is a cloud option rather than a replacement for OBS scene composition: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a camera feed.
