YouTube’s Take a Break feature is for a temporary, manually ended away slate—not an automatic recurring playlist transition.
Choose the right method for the gap

YouTube’s documentation describes Take a Break as an away slate, not as an automatic interstitial between playlist videos. For a recurring gap, plan the transition in the system that plays and switches your video sources.

Set up an automatic holding screen between videos
- Prepare your sources. In your encoder or playback system, set up the video playback source and a separate holding scene or source. The holding screen could communicate that the stream will continue shortly; check that its text remains legible at the resolution you stream.
- Configure the transition. Set the playback workflow to show the holding source when one video ends and return to the video source when the next video begins. Exact menus and automation differ by software. Confirm that your chosen encoder supports the transition you need rather than assuming YouTube will insert it.
- Check audio routing. Decide whether viewers should hear silence, music, slate audio, or another source during the gap. Mute a microphone if it should not remain audible while you are away, and check that the next video’s sound returns as intended.
- Connect to YouTube. Use the encoder’s YouTube destination option, if available, or enter YouTube’s stream URL and stream key in the encoder. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions cover connecting an encoder to a live stream.
- Preview the complete handoff. Before the broadcast, test a video ending, the holding screen, the next video, and all associated audio. YouTube recommends previewing and monitoring the stream; see its live streaming tips.
Use YouTube Take a Break for an occasional away slate
Take a Break is useful when you want to step away briefly during an active stream. You can use YouTube’s default slate or select an eligible video from your channel library. YouTube documents durations of 1, 3, or 5 minutes.
- Open the stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and locate the Take a Break setting.
- Choose the away slate and one of the available durations. Test the setting before relying on it during a live broadcast.
- When you are ready to return, go back to Live Control Room and end the break. The countdown reaching zero does not end the break or automatically resume your stream.
The overlay does not change the stream’s audio sources. If you choose a video-library slate, its audio can play, but you may need to adjust the encoder’s audio settings. Check whether a microphone or other source remains audible while the slate is showing. YouTube describes the feature in its live-stream monetization help.

Check stream settings and plan for the archive
For encoder-based streaming, review the stream key and other settings in YouTube Studio before going live. YouTube’s live stream settings help covers stream settings, latency, and DVR controls.
Do not assume a 24/7 broadcast will produce a complete replay. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. DVR rewind can also be limited or unavailable on very long streams, including streams longer than 12 hours. See YouTube’s guidance on live stream archives and DVR for live streams.
