Before sharing, Wallet shows the information requested; review it, then choose whether to continue. Wallet requires authentication before sharing. Digital IDs are not accepted everywhere, so check the requester’s rules and keep your physical ID available when needed.
Show your ID only after reviewing the request
- Open Google Wallet and tap your U.S. state ID or driver’s licence.
- Follow the requester’s flow. At a supported TSA checkpoint, let the agent scan the ID’s QR code. In a participating app, select Google Wallet when prompted.
- Read the information Wallet says will be shared with the requester.
- If you agree, tap Share or the app’s consent option, then authenticate when Wallet prompts you. If you do not agree, cancel instead.
The review step lets you see the requested fields before approving the presentation. It does not establish that the recipient will not keep its own records.

What Google says happens to your ID data
Setting up a state ID involves taking photos of the front and back of the physical credential and recording a short video of your face. Google says that, with your consent, it sends ID information and an image of your face from the video to the issuing government agency for review. If the agency approves the request, the encrypted digital ID is saved on your device. Google also says data it uses, including analytics data, is handled under its Privacy Policy information linked from its state-ID help.

Choose whether to keep an on-device sharing history
Activity history is off by default. If you turn it on, Google says it can record who received your ID, which information was shared, and when. The history is stored on the device and requires identity verification to view.
- Open the ID’s menu in Google Wallet.
- Choose View and manage activity.
- Turn on Activity history if you want this record.
You can turn the setting off; Google says doing so deletes the activity stored on the device. This history is a local review feature, not proof that an app or other recipient has not retained its own record. See Google’s state-ID help for its description of the setting.

Check whether the requester accepts your digital ID
Google lists use at TSA checkpoints in supported airports and use in some participating apps, including apps for identity or age verification. Acceptance depends on the requester and credential eligibility, so confirm before relying on the Wallet ID.
- TSA: Google’s guidance says the digital ID must be REAL ID-compliant for use at a domestic-flight checkpoint. It is not accepted there if it is not REAL ID-compliant.
- Apps: Only participating apps that offer a compatible verification flow accept the Wallet ID. Follow the app’s instructions to see whether it is supported.
- Physical backup: Carry your physical credential as needed. Google cautions that a digital ID is not accepted universally.
Google’s state ID and driver’s licence instructions describe these acceptance limits. The separate requirements listed for passport-based ID passes—such as Android 9 or later, NFC, Bluetooth, nearby devices, and a screen lock—apply to that ID-pass feature and should not be assumed to be universal state-ID requirements. Google documents those separately in Create or manage your ID pass.

Google classifies U.S. driving licences and state IDs as private passes. Its private-pass documentation says private passes are not used to personalize the Wallet experience by default and may require verification to view or use across Google services. However, Google notes that digital IDs and some partner-issued passes are managed differently from the general “use private pass across Google” control. Do not assume that changing that general control replaces the per-request review and consent flow. See Google’s private-pass guidance.
