How to Show a Church Logo and Service Schedule Over a YouTube Sermon Stream in OBS

In OBS, add the sermon feed as the background, then place an Image Source for the church logo and a Text Source for the service schedule above it in the Sources list. Use Studio Mode to preview edits before transitioning them live. OBS can send the stream to YouTube, but YouTube’s guidance does not promise that a single OBS session will run indefinitely; plan to monitor it and check the current Live Control Room settings for your intended continuous schedule.

Prepare the logo and schedule

  • Use artwork the church is authorized to display. A transparent PNG is a practical choice for a logo that should sit cleanly over video.
  • Keep schedule wording brief enough to read at the planned output size. For example: “Sunday worship • 10:00 AM.” Add a timezone when viewers may be in other regions.
  • Decide who will maintain the schedule and whether it is fixed or needs regular updates; that determines how you configure the text source.

Build and layer the overlay in OBS

  1. Create a scene. In OBS, create or select the scene for the sermon stream.
  2. Add the sermon picture. Add the camera, capture, or video source that provides the sermon as the background layer.
  3. Add the logo. In Sources, click the add (+) control, choose Image, and select the church logo file. OBS documents image source setup in its Image Sources guide.
  4. Add the schedule. Add a Text source and enter the service wording, or configure it to read from a file as described below. OBS Text Sources support simple text renders in a stream or recording layout: Text Sources guide.
  5. Place overlays above the video. In the Sources list, move the logo and text above the sermon source. Sources higher in the list appear on top and can obscure sources below, as explained in the OBS Sources Guide.
  6. Position and size them. Select each overlay and adjust it in the preview. Check that the logo and schedule do not cover faces, captions, or important sermon content. Review the composition at the actual output size where possible.

Choose how to update the service schedule

Method How updates work Best fit Trade-off
Text entered in OBS Edit the Text Source directly. A schedule that rarely changes or is managed by the OBS operator. Someone must make each change in OBS.
Text Source reading a file Enable the Text Source’s “Read from file” option and point it to a maintained text file. A schedule that another staff member updates outside OBS. The file must remain available at the configured location and contain the intended text.
Browser Source Load a local page or URL containing the layout. A genuinely dynamic or custom web layout. It adds browser-rendering complexity and can use significant resources; OBS recommends minimizing Browser Sources. See its Browser Source guide and encoding performance troubleshooting.

For a static logo, use an Image Source rather than building a browser overlay. For a simple schedule, a native Text Source is usually the more direct option.

Preview changes safely with Studio Mode

  1. Turn on Studio Mode in OBS.
  2. Make layout changes in the preview pane while the live pane continues showing the on-air scene.
  3. Check the logo, schedule, and sermon framing in the preview.
  4. When the layout is ready, select Transition to put the preview scene on air.

The two panes let the operator inspect a change before viewers see it. See the OBS Studio Overview Guide.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select an encoder stream.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream into OBS’s stream settings.
  3. Keep the stream key private. YouTube describes stream keys as like the stream’s password and address; do not expose one in screenshots or public instructions. See Manage live stream settings.
  4. Before starting, check the stream type and current account controls. YouTube’s “Reuse settings” workflow can carry metadata, settings, and the key from a previous stream; auto-start and auto-stop controls are also available in stream settings. Confirm what is enabled for this stream rather than assuming those settings will recover a failed connection.

YouTube’s encoder setup steps are in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0

Set encoder quality and test before the service

Use YouTube’s current encoder recommendations for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you actually plan to send. Its guidance distinguishes H.264 from AV1/H.265 rather than giving one universal bitrate. YouTube recommends CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and up to 60 fps. Choose a bitrate your upload connection can sustain, then test and monitor the result. Refer to the current YouTube encoder settings rather than relying on a bitrate copied from a different codec or output mode.

  1. Before the event, run a private or unlisted test if appropriate for the church’s setup.
  2. Check the YouTube Live Control Room preview for the expected picture and overlay placement.
  3. Verify that the intended microphone or program audio is present and that the viewer-facing watch page behaves as expected.
  4. Monitor stream health and audio/video during the service. OBS recommends testing settings before a first live stream; YouTube also recommends testing, previewing, and monitoring. See the OBS Quick Start Guide and YouTube live streaming tips.

What “nonstop” means for an OBS-to-YouTube stream

YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That condition does not establish that streams longer than 12 hours are automatically archived, or that an OBS session will remain connected indefinitely. The official guidance reviewed here does not promise failure-proof uptime for a continuous sermon stream. Check the intended recurring or continuous arrangement in the church’s Live Control Room, and arrange monitoring and a recovery plan for encoder, power, or network interruptions. Auto-start and auto-stop settings control starting and stopping behavior when enabled; they are not evidence of automatic recovery after a failure.

Troubleshooting the overlay and stream

  • The logo or schedule is hidden: Check the Sources order and move the overlay above the sermon source. A source lower in the list may be covered by one above it.
  • The logo has an unwanted background: Confirm that the selected artwork file has the transparency the church expects; a transparent PNG is a practical format for this use.
  • The schedule is stale: If it is typed directly into OBS, edit the Text Source. If it reads from a file, verify that “Read from file” is enabled and that the source points to the current maintained file.
  • The Browser Source is affecting performance: For a static schedule or logo, replace it with a native Text or Image Source. OBS notes that Browser Sources can consume significant resources.
  • YouTube does not show the expected stream: Confirm that OBS has the stream URL and key for the selected Live Control Room stream, and check the Control Room preview and stream health. Keep the key private while checking settings.
  • The stream drops: Check the encoder, power, and network connection, then follow the recovery workflow for the current YouTube stream. Auto-start/auto-stop controls alone do not establish that interruptions will be recovered automatically.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the priority is keeping uploaded sermon video playing on YouTube without leaving the OBS computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a live camera. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Start a free day with StreamNeo.

Copyright and channel eligibility checks

Use sermon, music, and other video or audio only when the church has the rights or permissions needed for the intended live broadcast and archive. A private or unlisted test does not itself grant those rights. Check YouTube’s current policies and the church’s own permissions before streaming or reusing recordings; an overlay does not change the rights status of the underlying content.
