The safest way to shop a flash sale is to verify the exact seller and web address independently, price the complete deal, read the sale’s delivery and return terms, and pay with a method that gives you a realistic dispute route. HTTPS and a polished design are only technical or cosmetic signals; neither proves that the retailer is genuine. The guidance below reflects U.S. consumer advice from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), so shipping rules and legal remedies may differ elsewhere.
How can I tell if an online sale website is fake?
Start from a destination you can verify
Do not treat an advertisement or the first search result as proof that you have reached the real retailer. The FTC warns that scammers can buy paid search placements using another company’s name, misleading wording, a fraudulent telephone number, or a look-alike web address. Its consumer alert says, "Scammers sometimes use paid search results to trick you." Read the full alert at the FTC’s guidance on search results.

If you already know the retailer’s address, type it into the browser yourself or use a bookmark you created previously. If you do not know the address, confirm it through several independent, unpaid results and compare the contact details. For a social-media promotion offering a familiar product at an extreme discount, search both the seller’s name and the exact URL that the promotion opens. A search result that leads to a different spelling, country domain, or company name deserves a pause before you enter payment information.
Read the domain and contact details closely
Look for misspellings, extra words, unusual subdomains, and addresses that put the supposed brand name in a part of the URL you did not expect. A page can copy a logo and product photographs while being operated by an unrelated seller. Check whether the site provides a physical mailing address, a working customer-service channel, and consistent company information on its checkout, returns, and contact pages. Those details do not guarantee honesty, but contradictions are a reason not to proceed.

Is HTTPS enough to know a shopping site is safe?
No. HTTPS encrypts the connection between your browser and the website; it does not verify who operates the site or whether the seller will ship anything. The FTC puts it plainly: "The ‘s’ after http means the site is encrypted — but it doesn’t mean it’s a legitimate site." Treat the padlock as a baseline for transmitting information, then evaluate the domain, merchant identity, price, terms, and payment request separately. See Online Shopping for the FTC’s explanation.
How do I check a seller before I buy?
Search for independent complaints and recent experiences
Search the company or individual seller together with terms such as “complaint,” “review,” or “scam.” Read recent experiences on more than one source and look for details about delivery, refunds, and communication rather than relying on a star average. Ratings can be fabricated, incentivized, misleading, or distorted by malicious reviews, so a high score is not authentication.
Check whether the seller answers reasonable questions about stock, condition, warranty, and shipping. Vague replies, copied text, pressure to pay immediately, or a refusal to identify the business behind the listing are meaningful warning signs. Keep in mind that a real retailer can still have occasional negative feedback; the useful question is whether the seller provides a coherent identity and a credible way to resolve problems.
Identify who is responsible on a marketplace
A marketplace page may involve three different parties: the platform, the third-party seller, and the company that fulfills or ships the order. Confirm the seller’s name, the return destination, who issues refunds, and which party handles a dispute. Marketplace buyer-protection programs have their own eligibility rules and deadlines; a platform’s presence does not make every listing equally safe. Inspect the listing, not just the photograph
Match the exact model number, size, color, included accessories, condition, and shipping charge to what you intend to buy. Stock images do not prove that the seller has the item or show its actual condition. Words such as “refurbished,” “used,” “as is,” and “close-out” can describe goods that are not new and may carry different return or warranty terms. Save the listing or take a screenshot when the description is likely to change after the sale.

Is this deal too good to be true?
Compare the same item, not merely a similar-looking one
Use the manufacturer’s model number or another exact identifier to compare offers. A lower headline price may apply to a smaller size, an older revision, an open-box unit, or a product missing accessories. Compare condition and included items before deciding that one seller is cheaper.
Calculate the complete price
Record the amount you will actually be charged, including shipping, handling, taxes, service fees, required add-ons, and any fee that appears only at checkout. An advertised price can depend on buying another product, choosing a particular condition, joining a program, or accepting a slower delivery option. The following framework keeps the comparison consistent:

Consider counterfeit or stolen goods
An unusually low price on an expensive brand-name product can indicate a counterfeit or stolen item, not a lucky bargain. Compare packaging, serial-number information, warranty language, and the seller’s explanation of provenance where those details are available. If the listing avoids a model number, uses only stock photographs, or claims a dramatic discount without explaining the condition, the risk is higher.

What sale terms should I read before paying?
Check delivery promises and delays
Read the promised dispatch or arrival date in the advertisement and again at checkout. Under the FTC’s U.S. online-shopping guidance, a seller must ship as promised. When no shipping time is stated, the FTC page says the seller generally must ship within 30 days after receiving your name, address, and payment or permission to charge. This is U.S.-specific guidance, not a universal deadline, and an order may be governed by additional terms or laws.

Save the advertised promise and any later message that changes it. If the seller cannot ship on time, follow the applicable instructions in the seller’s notice and keep evidence of the communication. Do not assume that a tracking number means the order was actually dispatched; check whether the carrier has accepted a package and whether the status is consistent with the promised date.
Read the sale-item return policy
Clearance and promotional items can have shorter return windows or no returns at all. Before paying, find the number of days available, the return address, who pays postage, whether a restocking fee applies, and whether the policy excludes opened, used, personalized, or sale merchandise. Also check whether a refund returns to the original payment method and whether the seller offers an exchange or only credit.
Ask whether the retailer will adjust the price if its own price drops after your purchase. A price-adjustment promise can be valuable during a long sale period, but it is effective only if you know the time limit and exclusions before ordering.
Confirm marketplace deadlines
If a marketplace handles disputes, read the particular program’s coverage for the seller, product category, payment route, and reason for the claim. Some programs require you to contact the seller first or open a case within a set number of days. Paying or communicating outside the platform can remove that protection.
Which payment method gives the best protection?
Use a credit card when possible
The FTC recommends credit cards for online purchases because they can provide a process for disputing certain billing errors. Examples described in the FTC’s online-shopping guidance include merchandise that never arrives, a duplicate charge, or an item that is wrong or defective. The page advises contacting the card issuer promptly and describes a 60-day written-notice period for the stated billing-error protections. Eligibility and procedures depend on the transaction and applicable rules, so follow the issuer’s instructions and do not wait until the deadline is close.

Walk away from forced, hard-to-recover payments
Be suspicious when a seller insists on a gift card, wire transfer, payment app, or cryptocurrency. These methods can make recovery difficult because the payment may be irreversible or outside the card-dispute process. A payment app is not automatically unsafe, but sending money directly to a stranger removes protections that may apply when you use a credit card through a reputable checkout. Never let a seller’s urgency override your ability to verify the business and retain a dispute route.
Keep marketplace payment inside the platform
When a marketplace says its protection applies only to on-platform transactions, do not accept a request to finish by email, text, direct bank transfer, or another site. An off-platform payment can leave you with no platform record and no access to the marketplace’s case process, even if the original listing looked legitimate.

Create a small evidence file before the listing disappears. Save:
- the company or seller name and the complete website address;
- the item description, model number, condition, photographs, and advertised price;
- the promised shipping date and the sale’s return, refund, and price-adjustment terms;
- the order confirmation, confirmation number, and final amount;
- the payment statement or receipt;
- messages with the seller, marketplace, or carrier; and
- tracking information and any notice that changes the delivery date.
Keep the files in a place you can access even if the website later disappears. These records establish what was offered, what you paid, and which promises were not met; they also make a card dispute or marketplace case easier to explain.
What should I do if my online order never arrives?
- Check the promised date and the evidence you saved. Compare the seller’s advertised or confirmed delivery promise with the current tracking status. Distinguish a carrier delay from a seller that never handed over the package.
- Contact the seller in writing. State the order number, purchase date, promised delivery date, and the remedy you want. Keep the message and the response. If the seller offers a new date, save that commitment rather than relying on a phone conversation.
- Open the marketplace’s process when applicable. Use the platform’s official case or refund route and observe its deadline. Do not move the discussion or payment outside the platform while the case is open.
- Contact your card issuer promptly. Ask whether the transaction qualifies for a billing dispute and follow the issuer’s instructions for documentation and written notice. The FTC’s stated 60-day period for certain billing errors is measured from the relevant statement, so waiting can forfeit an otherwise available process.
- Report suspected fraud. If the seller disappears, used a deceptive identity, or demanded an irreversible payment, report the incident to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Include the seller’s web address, payment details, advertisements, and communications.
How should I handle a wrong, damaged, or counterfeit item?
Photograph the package and item as received, preserve labels and packing slips, and compare the product with the saved listing. Notify the seller through a channel that creates a record and request the remedy promised by the return policy. If the seller does not resolve an eligible wrong or defective-item charge, ask the card issuer about a dispute and provide the listing, correspondence, and delivery evidence. Marketplace buyers should also use the platform’s case process before its deadline.
Do not ship an expensive item back to an address supplied only in an unsolicited message. Verify the return instructions against the original policy or the marketplace case. A return can be difficult to recover if the destination is unrelated to the seller or if you have no proof of postage.
A practical stop-or-proceed decision
Proceed only when the major facts line up: you reached the seller through a verified route, the domain and company identity are consistent, the exact product and condition are clear, the total price is understandable, delivery and returns are written down, and the payment method leaves a credible dispute path.

These checks cannot guarantee that a retailer will perform, but they reduce the chance that a convincing advertisement, encrypted checkout, manipulated review, or headline discount will make the decision for you.
