How to Shop Online Without AI Recommendations

To shop online with less influence from AI and personalized recommendations, switch off recommendation controls in your search or shopping account, review each retailer’s privacy and cookie settings, and limit activity-based signals in your browser and device. Then choose products from specifications, total cost, delivery and return terms, and independently verified sellers instead of suggested items. These steps reduce personalization; they cannot make every result neutral because current searches, location, language, device type, and each site’s own systems can still affect what you see.

What turning off recommendations actually changes

Recommendation systems use more than a product name. Google says current query relevance is the default basis for Shopping listing order, while recent activity can also inform personalized listings, recommendations, and reminders. A recommendation toggle addresses that personalization layer; it does not erase every signal used to answer a search.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Signals that can remain: your current query, approximate location, language, device type, and the retailer’s own first-party behavior rules.
  • Stored activity is separate: switching off personalized recommendations does not automatically pause or delete activity saved in your account.
  • Controls are scoped: a Google setting does not switch off personalization on a separate retailer, browser, phone, or signed-out session.
  • Results can still be relevant: a non-personalized shopping result can be ranked for the words you typed, inventory, availability, and other ordinary search factors.

The practical goal is not to make the web recommendation-free. It is to stop past behavior from steering as much of the process as possible, then make the buying decision from information you deliberately collect.

Evaluate each privacy measure on five dimensions: its scope, the signal it controls, what remains visible to the service, how long the choice lasts, and what convenience it costs. An account setting may follow you when signed in, while a cookie choice may apply only to one browser. Clearing history can remove useful saved preferences, and a private window can reduce local traces without changing what a website sees in real time.

Turn off personalized recommendations in Google Search

When you are signed in

  1. Open Google Search while signed in to the account you use for shopping.
  2. Open the Search services settings for your account.
  3. Find Personalized Recommendations under Search services.
  4. Turn the setting off and confirm the change if Google asks.

Google says its Search services settings are being updated, so the menu name or exact path may look different in your account. Look for the control named Personalized Recommendations rather than assuming that a general advertising switch does the same job.

If you share a computer or use more than one Google account, verify which profile is active before changing the setting. A control changed in one signed-in account does not automatically change another account or a browser session in which you are signed out.

When you are signed out

For signed-out users, Google refers to Search customization controls. Those controls apply to the current browser context rather than giving you a universal switch for every account and retailer. If you use several browsers or devices, check the state in each one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What this setting does not do

Google documents that location, language, device type, and the search you are making can still influence results after recommendations are turned off. The setting also does not pause or delete account activity. Use Google’s separate activity controls if your objective includes reviewing or deleting saved searches and browsing-related activity.

Deleting old activity and turning off future personalization solve different problems. You may choose either, both, or neither depending on whether your priority is limiting recommendation use, reducing retention, or preserving conveniences such as saved searches and preferences.

Turn off personalized listings and reminders in Google Shopping

  1. Sign in to the Google account you use for Shopping.
  2. Open Personalisation settings.
  3. Under Search services, select Personalized Recommendations.
  4. Turn the control off.

Google describes current search relevance as the default basis for Shopping listing ranking. It also says recent activity, including searches, may inform personalized listings, recommendations, and reminders. Turning off the recommendation control reduces that activity-based layer; it does not prevent Google from matching listings to the query you just entered.

Review activity history separately if you want to remove past records. A recommendation switch and an activity-retention choice are different decisions: one changes how recommendations are generated, while the other concerns what remains stored in the account.

Do not interpret an unchanged result page as proof that the control failed. Products can remain highly ranked because they match your exact model, size, color, or other words, or because they are available for your location. The aim is to remove past-activity influence, not to force random or identical results for every shopper.

Check every retailer’s account and cookie controls

A search-engine preference is not a universal opt-out. Once you open a merchant’s site, that merchant can apply its own account history, viewed products, cart contents, loyalty profile, and cookie choices.

Account and privacy pages

  1. Open the retailer’s account, privacy, or data settings before browsing deeply.
  2. Look for labels such as personalized recommendations, tailored content, shopping suggestions, or use of activity for advertising.
  3. Disable recommendation or personalization options that match your goal.
  4. Repeat the check for each retailer; there is no single setting that covers unrelated merchants.

Some sites place these choices in a privacy center, while others put them under account preferences or a cookie-management link in the footer. Read the description beside each switch: an option that controls promotional email may not affect on-site product ranking, and an advertising opt-out may not stop recently viewed items from appearing.

Cookie banners

The Federal Trade Commission says cookie choices can include allowing only cookies necessary for a site to function or allowing advertising and other purposes. If the banner offers a granular choice, select necessary cookies only when that is compatible with the site’s checkout and account features. You may still see advertisements; the change limits some history-based personalization rather than removing ads altogether.

Cookie controls often apply only to that browser and device. A later visit from another browser, a cleared site preference, or a signed-in account can produce a different result. Some retailers may ask again after a period of time, so check the displayed choice when the site’s behavior changes.

Limit activity signals in your browser and phone

Microsoft Edge

Microsoft documents an Edge privacy control for whether browsing activity is saved and used to personalize Edge and Microsoft services, including ads, search, shopping, and news. Open Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Privacy, then review the control concerning saving and using browsing activity for personalization.

Microsoft states that browsing activity is not collected for this personalization while you browse in an InPrivate window or as a Guest. That statement applies to the specified personalization use; it does not mean that every website, network, or service becomes unable to observe activity.

Separate Microsoft account advertising controls may not turn off collection used for search results or other experiences. Choose the control that specifically addresses browsing activity and personalization, then review the account-level options as a second step.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Other browsers and devices

Browser privacy settings vary. Clearing cookies and browsing or search history can limit some activity-based advertising, and phone-level advertising settings can reduce some ad personalization. These actions may need to be repeated for every browser and device. They can also sign you out, remove saved preferences, or make sites forget items in a cart.

Make changes gradually if you need an uninterrupted checkout. Record account credentials and order numbers before clearing data, and understand that a browser-level preference cannot override a retailer’s server-side account history when you sign back in.

Private browsing

A private or incognito window can remove local session history after the window closes on browsers that provide that behavior. It does not stop a site from seeing activity while the session is open. The FTC’s guidance is explicit that private browsing does not block websites from seeing your online activity, and browser protections differ. Treat private browsing as a way to limit local records, not as a recommendation or tracking off switch.

Use a deliberate product shortlist instead of suggested items

Once personalization is reduced, replace the recommendation feed with a repeatable specification-first process.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Write the requirements before searching. Record the manufacturer, model number or product family, required size, color, capacity, compatibility, and any deal-breakers. This prevents a visually appealing suggestion from changing the task.
  2. Search exact identifiers. Use the model number and important specifications in the query. Add words that describe the condition you require, such as a particular size or connector, rather than relying on a category page’s suggested filters.
  3. Build a shortlist from multiple sources. Save the exact listing title, model identifier, seller name, stock status, and date you checked it. A second source can reveal a different specification or a missing accessory.
  4. Compare the complete price. Add shipping, handling, delivery charges, taxes, and other fees. A lower headline price is not lower if mandatory charges appear at checkout.
  5. Check fulfillment promises. Read the stated dispatch and delivery window, whether the item ships from the seller or a marketplace partner, and what happens when the date is missed.
  6. Read return terms before paying. Note the return deadline, conditions for opened or used goods, who pays return shipping, restocking fees, and the refund method.
  7. Save your evidence. Keep the seller name, listing page, order confirmation, policy text, receipts, and important messages. Policies and listings can change after purchase.

Compare like with like: the same model number, condition, included accessories, warranty coverage, and delivery service. A marketplace listing can use a familiar product name while offering a different generation, size, or bundle. Resolve those differences before treating two prices as comparable.

Review evidence critically

The FTC advises looking at multiple sources for reviews and not relying on star ratings alone. Reviews can be fake, manipulated, or attached to a different variation of the product. Give more weight to specific, verifiable details such as measurements, compatibility tests, warranty handling, and photographs that match the exact model.

Check the date and variation attached to a review, and distinguish comments about shipping from comments about product quality. A high rating does not confirm that the seller is authorized, that the item is new, or that the advertised return terms apply to your order.

Verify the seller and payment destination independently

Recommendation reduction is not the same as fraud protection. The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security warns that AI can create convincing websites, advertisements, product descriptions, reviews, and customer-service interactions. Its guidance states: “AI (artificial intelligence) tools cannot reliably determine whether a seller, website or offer is trustworthy or fraudulent in the same way a person can.” Make the trust decision yourself.

Seller checks

  • Confirm the legal or trading name, a working contact method, and a physical or mailing address where the seller provides one.
  • Read the privacy policy, refund policy, warranty terms, and delivery conditions. Look for contradictions between the listing and those policies.
  • Search for independent information about the seller rather than accepting testimonials shown only on the product page.
  • Check that the checkout address and payment recipient belong to the expected business. Do not move payment to an unrelated person, gift-card code, cryptocurrency wallet, or private messaging account because a seller asks.
  • Treat countdown timers, urgent low-stock messages, and unusually cheap offers as reasons to slow down and verify, not as proof that the deal is genuine.

Payment and records

Use a payment method that offers recourse where available. Save the final order details and communications so you can challenge an incorrect charge, missing item, or failed refund. A secure connection alone does not establish that the seller is legitimate.

Before submitting payment, compare the merchant name shown by the checkout page with the name in the seller’s policies and confirmation. If those details conflict, stop and contact the business through a contact method you found independently, not through a message that may have been generated by the listing itself.

Choose the control that matches your goal

Method Scope What it can reduce What remains Persistence and trade-off
Google Personalized Recommendations Google Search and Shopping for the signed-in account Activity-based recommendations, personalized listings, and reminders Current query, location, language, and device type can still affect results Account setting; Google says labels and paths may change
Retailer privacy and cookie controls One merchant’s site or account That retailer’s use of cookies and account activity for suggestions or advertising The retailer’s ordinary search, inventory, and first-party site behavior Per merchant, browser, and device; choices vary by site
Browser history and cookie clearing The selected browser profile and device Some activity-based advertising and local history signals Websites can observe activity during visits, and ads can still appear May sign you out or remove saved preferences; repeat on other browsers and devices
Edge privacy control Edge and Microsoft services covered by the browsing-activity setting Saving and using browsing activity to personalize ads, search, shopping, and news Other site collection and controls outside that setting Review separately for each account or browsing context
Private or InPrivate window One temporary local session Local history retained after the session on browsers that support that behavior Websites can see activity during the session Session-based; not a universal tracking opt-out

Use the table as a planning aid rather than a promise of anonymity. Combining an account control with retailer choices and browser settings can reduce several activity signals, but no row removes current-query relevance or a site’s own inventory and fraud checks. The more controls you combine, the more likely you are to lose saved preferences or need to repeat settings on another device.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Assuming one switch covers the whole web

Google, a retailer, your browser, and your phone can each apply different controls. Correct this by checking the account that ranks the results, the merchant that hosts the listing, and the browser or device that stores activity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Confusing ad personalization with recommendations

An advertising preference may affect promoted ads without changing product suggestions or search ranking. Use the setting that names recommendations, shopping personalization, or browsing-activity use for the specific service.

Believing that deleting history changes the current query

Clearing stored activity does not remove the words, location, language, or device details supplied by the search you are making now. Use precise specifications and compare several listings when you need control over the result set.

Expecting private browsing to hide a purchase

Private windows limit local records but do not prevent sites from seeing what you do during the session. If you need less account-based influence, sign out where appropriate and review the site’s own controls; if you need transaction records, keep the order evidence separately.

Trusting a neutral-looking result

A page without an obvious recommendation label can still contain deceptive copy, fake reviews, or a fraudulent checkout. Apply the seller, policy, payment, and pressure-tactic checks before ordering.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Clearing data immediately before checkout

Removing cookies or history can discard a cart, sign you out, or erase a preference needed to complete an order. Save the listing and account details first, and make privacy changes before you begin a purchase rather than halfway through payment.

A low-personalization shopping routine

  1. Set Google Search or Shopping’s Personalized Recommendations control to off, understanding that activity retention is separate.
  2. Open the retailer’s privacy and cookie controls and allow only the purposes you accept.
  3. Use browser and device privacy settings to limit saved history and advertising signals; repeat on each device you use.
  4. Use a private window only when you want less local session history, not as proof that the site cannot observe you.
  5. Search from a written specification, compare the full delivered cost and terms, and save the listing and seller records.
  6. Verify the seller and payment destination independently, then use a payment method with recourse where available.

This approach leaves ordinary search relevance and site functionality intact while preventing past activity from being the only voice in the buying decision.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does turning off Google’s Personalized Recommendations remove all AI from shopping results?

No. It reduces activity-based recommendations, personalized listings, and reminders. Current query terms, location, language, device type, inventory, and a retailer’s own systems can still shape results.

Will switching off recommendations delete my Google activity?

No. Google treats recommendation personalization and activity retention as separate controls. Review or delete saved activity through the account’s activity controls if that is also your goal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do Google’s settings cover every retailer?

No. A Google account setting applies to Google services. Each retailer can use its own account history, cookies, loyalty profile, and on-site recommendation controls.

Does private browsing stop websites from tracking what I buy?

No. A private window may remove local session history after it closes, but websites can see activity while the session is open. Browser protections vary.

Will necessary-cookies-only settings remove all advertisements?

No. You may still see ads. The choice limits some history-based personalization while preserving cookies needed for site functions when the retailer supports that option.

How can I compare products without recommendation feeds?

Write down the required manufacturer or model, size, color, capacity, compatibility, and deal-breakers. Search those identifiers, compare multiple listings and the full cost, then check delivery, returns, seller identity, and payment terms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How often must privacy settings be repeated?

It depends on the control. Retailer cookie choices and browser settings commonly apply to one browser and device, while account settings may follow a signed-in account. Check each browser, device, and retailer you use.

Can AI-generated product descriptions or reviews prove that a seller is legitimate?

No. The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security warns that AI can produce convincing sites, ads, descriptions, reviews, and customer-service interactions. Verify contact details, policies, payment destination, and the offer independently.

The Bottom Line

Turn off recommendation controls where you shop, limit activity signals without confusing privacy with anonymity, and make each purchase from written specifications, total cost, seller terms, and independent verification. Personalization can be reduced, not eliminated.
