Choose a spending limit that fits your finances, then rank what matters most: design, metal, stone, size, or other features. For a diamond engagement ring, decide where you are willing to trade among cut, color, clarity, and carat. There is no universally correct combination; the right balance depends on your priorities and budget.
In The Knot’s 2024 Jewelry and Engagement Study, as reported in its January 7, 2025 article, 71% of proposers said they set a budget. That is a study finding, not a rule that every shopper must follow. Kristi Kroll, HauteCarat’s director of client relations, advises: “My best suggestion for a budget is to be realistic—set a budget that aligns with your current financial situation.”
Research stores before you go
Compare retailers’ credentials, customer reviews, service, and after-sale terms. BriteCo also recommends researching stores and reading customer reviews. If you are considering an online seller, The Knot’s Kroll advises calling the company, requesting a video call, and doing your research rather than relying on a product page alone.

Visiting several stores can make differences in selection and service easier to judge. The Knot reports that couples in its 2024 Jewelry and Engagement Study visited an average of five retailers before buying. Treat that as a reported average, not a required number of visits.
Compare rings in person
Assess the design and fit
Try on rings rather than judging them only in a case or on a screen. Pay attention to how the ring looks on your hand, how it feels, and whether the design suits your preferences. For a diamond engagement ring, compare stone shape as well as the four Cs: cut, color, clarity, and carat. These affect appearance and price, but personal taste and the amount you are comfortable spending should guide the choice.

If you expect to wear a wedding band alongside an engagement ring, try the two together. Check how they sit against each other and whether you like the overall look and feel.
Check the ring outside showroom lighting
Jewelry-store lighting is designed to showcase gemstones, so ask whether you can view a favorite in natural light or another ordinary setting. A ring may look different away from the display case. If you compare options at different retailers, take photos or short videos and keep your hand position similar; that makes visual comparisons more useful.

Questions to ask before buying
Policies and services vary by retailer and purchase. Ask for the specific terms in writing, especially if a ring is custom-made or includes a valuable stone.
- Returns and exchanges: What is the return or exchange window, and are there conditions, fees, or exclusions?
- Warranty: What does it cover, for how long, and what care or inspections are required to keep it valid?
- Stone documentation: What certificate or other documentation comes with the stone, and which characteristics does it identify?
- Appraisal: Is an appraisal included or available, who prepares it, and what does it cost?
- Resizing and maintenance: What are the likely costs for resizing, cleaning, inspections, or repairs, and where can the work be done?
- Custom design: Can the jeweler provide digital renderings, explain design choices, and specify how revisions affect the price and schedule?
When custom design makes sense
Custom work can help you shape a ring around particular preferences. Ask the jeweler to explain the design choices and show digital renderings if available, so you can review the proportions before production. The Knot’s quoted expert says custom work may allow more adjustment to meet a budget, but that does not mean it will always cost less than a ready-made ring.
