How to Shop Around an Inventory Robot in a Crowded Grocery Aisle

Give the robot space, wait for a clear opening, and ask a store employee for help if the aisle stays blocked or you need an accessible route. Inventory robots are usually collecting shelf information for store operations, not responding to shopper commands.

What the robot is doing in the aisle

An inventory robot is a store operations machine. Simbe describes its Tally system as an autonomous robot that scans shelves and identifies out-of-stocks, pricing errors, and products placed in the wrong location. The resulting information is used by the retailer to maintain inventory and shelf accuracy.

That purpose explains why the machine may stop in front of a shelf, travel slowly through a food section, or make repeated passes. It is checking products rather than shopping, answering questions, carrying purchases, or acting as a mobile customer-service desk. A shopper should therefore treat it as store equipment that is operating in a public aisle, not as an employee who can reliably understand a spoken request.

A named deployment is not a universal rule

Simbe announced a test in which Tally moved independently through SPAR and INTERSPAR stores in Austria and checked the food section. This is one documented deployment. It does not establish that every grocery chain uses Tally, that every retailer uses the same route or behavior, or that a shopper’s procedure in Austria applies to another country or store.

Robot design, aisle width, local operating procedures, and interaction features can differ. The practical advice below is deliberately model-neutral because no single shopper protocol was established for all grocery inventory robots.

The simple aisle rule: pause, create space, then pass

When you notice an inventory robot ahead, slow down before entering the narrowest part of the aisle. Look at the remaining space, the direction of other shoppers and carts, and whether the robot is stationary or moving. Do not crowd it simply because it has not moved immediately.

  1. Pause at a safe distance. Stop where you are not blocking people approaching from behind. Allow the robot and nearby shoppers to continue their paths.
  2. Wait for a clear opening. If another shopper, cart, or display makes the passage tight, let that traffic clear before you try to go around.
  3. Go around only when there is comfortable room. If the aisle is open enough, pass without touching the robot, its sensors, its charging equipment, shelving, or other store fixtures. This is general courtesy and safety advice, not a verified instruction for every model.
  4. Use another aisle when practical. A short detour is preferable to squeezing between moving equipment and another shopper.
  5. Ask an employee when the route remains blocked. Staff can tell you whether to wait, use another route, or receive assistance.

Nothing in the available material establishes a universal signal, button, phrase, or hand gesture that makes every inventory robot stop or move aside. Do not assume that saying “excuse me,” waving, or standing directly in front of the machine will produce a predictable response.

Choosing what to do in common aisle situations

What you see Best next step What not to assume
The robot is ahead and the aisle is wide Pause briefly, check for other traffic, and pass with clear space if you can do so without contact. Do not assume the robot will yield in a particular direction.
The robot is stopped at a shelf Wait for a gap or use another aisle. Ask staff if you need the products behind it immediately. Do not treat the stop as an invitation to move the robot.
A cart and the robot leave only a narrow gap Let one or both clear, then continue when the route is comfortable. Do not force your way through or block opposing traffic.
The robot and another shopper are approaching Slow down and give priority to creating space for people and equipment to pass safely. Do not count on the machine to interpret eye contact or a verbal request.
You cannot pass with a mobility device Ask a store employee for an accessible route or direct assistance. Do not claim that accessibility law gives the inventory robot a defined right of way.
The machine appears inactive or is beside a charging dock Keep clear of the equipment and ask staff if its position prevents access. Do not unplug, push, steer, or reposition store equipment.

A step-by-step plan for a crowded aisle

1. Stop before the bottleneck

A crowded aisle can become difficult quickly when a robot, cart, and shopper converge. Stopping before the tightest point gives everyone more time to react and prevents you from becoming an additional obstruction. Keep your cart with you rather than leaving it across the aisle while you wait.

2. Read the available space, not the robot’s apparent intention

You may be able to see an open side of the aisle, but another shopper may be approaching from that direction. Check both ends and the space near displays. A clear route means more than a gap that is technically wide enough for your body; you also need room to control a cart, maintain a comfortable distance, and avoid contact with the robot.

3. Let the moving traffic settle

In a busy store, waiting a few seconds can resolve the problem without anyone giving instructions. Allow shoppers and carts to pass, then reassess. If the robot begins moving, remain out of its immediate path rather than trying to race around it.

4. Pass without interacting with the machine

When there is sufficient room, walk around the robot normally. Do not touch it, lean on it, cover or obstruct any apparent sensors, or attempt to change its route. The reviewed information does not verify a shopper-facing control system, and a consumer should not operate store equipment without staff direction.

5. Escalate early when you need help

If the aisle stays blocked, if you are carrying a child or bulky items, or if a mobility device cannot pass comfortably, find a store employee. Explain where you are and what route you need. Staff can coordinate with the store’s operating procedure; shoppers should not improvise by pushing the robot or reaching into its charging area.

Accessibility: what the DOJ guidance does and does not say

The U.S. Department of Justice discusses businesses’ obligations toward people with disabilities who use an other power-driven mobility device, or OPDMD. Its guidance generally says a business must allow such a device unless that particular type cannot be accommodated because of legitimate safety requirements based on actual risks. The guidance also discusses narrow or crowded settings and allows policies such as requiring operation at pedestrian speed or identifying specific places or circumstances where a device cannot go.

That material concerns the shopper’s mobility device. It does not create a robot-specific right-of-way rule, tell an inventory robot how to yield, or establish that a store robot must move on command. The distinction matters: a shopper using a powered mobility device may have accessibility protections, while the store’s inventory robot remains store equipment subject to local procedures.

If your mobility device cannot get through

  1. Stop before the narrow point and avoid blocking the rest of the aisle.
  2. Tell a store employee that you need a clear, accessible route.
  3. Ask whether the robot can be allowed to finish its task or whether staff can provide another route or assistance.
  4. Follow the store’s actual safety instructions rather than attempting to move the robot yourself.

The practical objective is a usable route, not a confrontation over which machine or person has priority. If a store cannot provide a comfortable passage, document the problem through its customer-service channel and, where relevant, seek advice about local accessibility requirements.

Safety certification: useful evidence, not a zero-risk promise

UL Solutions reported that Simbe’s Tally robot and charging dock earned certification to UL 3300. The announcement says the evaluation includes safe autonomous mobility in dynamic environments in which robots may encounter unpredictable human behavior. That is relevant evidence for the named Tally system and dock.

It is not a certification of every grocery robot, every retailer’s installation, or every operating condition. It also is not a guarantee that a collision, obstruction, or other incident is impossible. UL Solutions vice president and general manager of Consumer, Medical and Information Technologies Sherry He described the challenge this way: “Robots that move around and work in places full of people, like grocery stores or shopping aisles, need to meet a very different level of safety.”

For shoppers, the sensible response is ordinary caution: keep clear of moving equipment, avoid touching it, watch the surrounding traffic, and ask staff for assistance when the route is uncertain. Certification does not replace those behaviors.

What you should not expect the robot to do

  • Answer product questions: Its documented purpose is shelf scanning and inventory information, not customer service.
  • Move because you ask: No command that works across models was established.
  • Choose the same passing direction every time: No universal maneuver or yielding direction was established.
  • Recognize every person or situation: The sources do not establish perfect detection of shoppers, carts, mobility devices, or unusual obstructions.
  • Follow the same procedure in every chain: Deployments and local store practices vary.
  • Have a shopper-accessible emergency control: No universal control, signal, or interface was identified.

These limits do not mean a particular robot lacks sensors or safety features. They mean a shopper should not rely on an unverified feature when deciding how to pass.

Examples of how to handle the encounter

Example: a clear side opening

You see the robot near one shelf and several shoppers behind you. The opposite side appears open, but a cart is approaching. Stop before the robot, let the cart pass, and then walk around with your own cart under control. There is no need to speak to the machine or touch it.

Example: the robot occupies the only practical path

The aisle is narrow, the robot is stationary, and shoppers are approaching from both directions. Wait outside the bottleneck without forming a second blockage. If the path does not clear promptly, use another aisle or ask an employee to help you reach the section.

Example: a mobility device cannot pass

Your powered mobility device cannot comfortably fit between the robot and a display. Do not attempt to squeeze through or reposition the machine. Ask staff for a clear route. The DOJ’s OPDMD guidance supports analyzing actual safety and access conditions, but it does not specify how this particular robot must move.

Example: you need an item behind the robot

Wait for a safe opening or ask an employee to retrieve the item or coordinate access. Reaching around the robot, blocking its route, or trying to steer it creates an avoidable interaction with store equipment.

Example: the robot appears to approach you

Remain calm, slow down, and move toward an open area when one is available. Do not assume it will stop on a spoken command or choose the side you expect. If you cannot safely clear the path, ask staff for assistance.

How to ask store staff for useful help

A specific request is easier to act on than a general complaint. Tell the employee:

  • Which aisle or section is affected.
  • Whether the robot is moving, stopped, or beside a charging dock.
  • Whether a cart, another shopper, or a mobility device makes the passage difficult.
  • Whether you need a different route, an item retrieved, or an accessible path.

For example: “The inventory robot is stopped in aisle five, and I cannot pass with my mobility device. Could you provide an accessible route?” Or: “The robot and carts are blocking the cereal aisle. Can someone help me reach that shelf?” These requests focus staff on the practical outcome without asking you to diagnose the robot.

Shopper checklist

  • Slow down when you first see the robot.
  • Keep your cart and belongings out of the remaining passage.
  • Wait for people and carts to clear.
  • Pass only when there is comfortable room.
  • Do not touch, push, steer, unplug, or obstruct the robot or dock.
  • Do not rely on a verbal command or gesture to make it yield.
  • Use another aisle when that is the safer practical choice.
  • Ask store staff for assistance if the route remains blocked.
  • Request an accessible route if a mobility device cannot pass comfortably.
  • Remember that a certification reported for Tally does not automatically apply to another robot.

What is established—and what remains store-specific

It is established that inventory robots such as Tally can scan shelves for out-of-stocks, pricing errors, and misplaced products, and that Tally has a reported UL 3300 certification with its charging dock. It is also established that Tally was tested moving independently through SPAR and INTERSPAR food sections in Austria.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is not established that all grocery robots share Tally’s design, certification, route, speed, controls, or behavior. No representative statistic about shopper reactions was identified, and there is no universal shopper command or right-of-way rule. Your safest course is therefore consistent even when the hardware changes: leave room, wait for a clear path, and involve store staff when the aisle or an accessible route cannot be used comfortably.
