Do not choose a box from the console’s bare dimensions alone. Wrapping, the controller, HDMI cable and power cord all add thickness. The correct carton is the one that leaves room for a protective cushion on every side while preventing movement inside.

What you need to know before choosing a box
Microsoft lists the Xbox Series X at 15.1 × 15.1 × 30.1 cm. The disc model weighs 9.8 lb, while the all-digital model weighs 7.9 lb. Microsoft lists the Series S at 15.1 × 15.1 × 30.1 cm and 4.25 lb. Those are bare-console figures, not the measurements or weight of a shippable package.

Measure the console, controller and bundled accessories after you have decided how they will be protected. Add the thickness of the wrapping to the console’s length, width and height, then allow space for void fill and the carton walls. Microsoft does not publish one universal replacement-box size for every Series X or Series S packing arrangement, so the final packed dimensions must determine the carton.

Materials that protect an Xbox in transit
- A new, sturdy corrugated carton: A used box may have crushed corners, weakened fiber or hidden moisture damage. Choose a carton that remains rigid when you press its panels.
- Anti-static foam or anti-static bubble wrap: UPS recommends anti-static foam with bubble sheeting for electronics. Air-cellular cushioning also gives a predictable protective thickness.
- At least 3–4 inches of air-cellular cushioning: FedEx’s no-original-packaging method for a computer or peripheral calls for this amount around every side, with more added when necessary to stop movement.
- Void fill: Use additional foam, bubble wrap or another stable cushioning material to close every gap. The goal is a tight fit, not a box filled loosely enough for the console to migrate.
- A clean plastic bag: A bag keeps loose-fill material away from openings and helps contain small particles. It is a barrier, not a substitute for cushioning.
- Two-inch pressure-sensitive packing tape: Heavy-duty or reinforced tape is preferable for a heavy electronic device.
- A second box, if you are using the two-box method: Fragile-goods guidance from UPS calls for an outer box that is 6 inches larger in each dimension than the inner box, leaving 3 inches of cushioning around the inner box.
- Labels and documentation: Prepare the carrier label, a duplicate address label for inside the carton, photographs and the console’s serial number.
Avoid allowing loose EPS peanuts to touch the console. UPS warns that EPS can create static electricity that may damage electronic items. If loose fill is your only option, put the console in a sealed plastic bag first and still maintain cushioning on every face.
Prepare the console and accessories
- Shut the console down completely. Use the normal shutdown command rather than leaving it in sleep or standby mode. Wait for lights and fan activity to stop.
- Disconnect everything. Remove the power cable, HDMI cable, network cable, storage accessories and any other connected device. Never ship with a disc left in the drive.
- Photograph the condition. Take clear images of all console faces, ports, the serial-number label, the controller and each cable. These records establish what was in the parcel and its condition before shipment.
- Keep the set together. Put the controller, HDMI cable and power cord with the console, but do not let them touch its panels. Bag or wrap each item so plugs, connector shells and controller edges cannot strike the console.
- Protect projecting parts. Give special attention to the disc-drive area, ventilation openings, feet and corners. Do not push packing material into a vent or port.
Microsoft lists the controller, HDMI cable and power cord among the accessories supplied with Series S. A shipment containing a Series X may have a different bundle, so inventory the actual contents rather than assuming every package is identical.
Wrap the Xbox on all six sides
Use a sealed barrier before loose fill
If the packing plan uses loose-fill material, place the console in a clean plastic bag and close the bag without compressing the vents. The bag prevents particles from entering openings and makes unpacking cleaner. Do not seal a warm console; let it cool fully first.

Wrap the console with anti-static bubble wrap or another electronics-safe, air-cellular material. Cover the top, bottom, front, back and both sides. Aim for at least 3–4 inches of air-cellular cushioning around the wrapped computer-sized device, following FedEx’s no-original-packaging guidance; add more where the carton could otherwise transmit an impact directly to a corner or face.
Overlap the wrapping so there are no exposed corners. Keep the wrap snug enough that it cannot slide off, but do not crush the console or block openings with hard objects. Secure the wrap with tape on the wrap itself, not directly on the console’s finish.

Protect the accessories separately
Wrap the controller in its own layer of bubble wrap or foam. Coil cables loosely, bag them, and cover their plugs. A small inner carton or a firmly padded accessory bundle is better than placing hard accessories in the same cavity as the console. The controller and cables should fill a planned side space, not become moving projectiles inside the main cavity.
Choose between one box and two boxes
Single-box packing
A single box is practical when you have a strong carton large enough for the required cushioning. Center the wrapped console and put the separately protected accessories in side spaces. Fill every gap so the contents cannot shift when the closed carton is gently rocked.

This method uses less material and usually weighs less. Its weakness is that the outer carton is the only crush-resistant shell, so its corners and seams must be sound and the internal cushioning must be generous.
Two-box packing
A two-box arrangement adds a second crush-resistant layer. Place the fully wrapped console and accessories in a sturdy inner box, immobilize them, then place that box inside an outer carton. UPS’s fragile-goods guidance specifies an outer box 6 inches larger in each dimension than the inner box, with 3 inches of cushioning between the two boxes on every side.
The inner box must be sealed and stable before it goes into the outer carton. Keep the inner box centered; do not let it rest against the outer walls. Add cushioning to the bottom first, then the sides and top, checking that the inner box cannot contact any outer panel.

The two-box method consumes more material and may increase the billable dimensions, but it creates another barrier against punctures, corner crush and a single impact reaching the console. It is the better choice when the available carton is used, thin, oversized or otherwise uncertain.

- Cushion the bottom. Put a substantial layer of foam or air-cellular material in the carton before inserting the wrapped console. The console should not sit directly on cardboard.
- Place the console centrally. Keep a similar protective distance from each wall. The heaviest part should not be pressed against one corner.
- Add the accessory bundle. Use protected side spaces or a separate inner box. Keep plugs, connector ends and controller edges from touching the console.
- Fill the side voids. Add cushioning in the gaps, working around the carton rather than dumping material on top of the console.
- Fill the top void. The final layer should stop the wrapped console from rising into the flaps when the carton is inverted or dropped.
- Perform a movement test. Close the flaps without taping and gently rock the carton in several directions. If you hear or feel movement, reopen it and add or reposition cushioning.
FedEx’s instruction is to fill all spaces with additional cushioning so the wrapped item fits tightly inside the box. “Tightly” means immobilized, not compressed: the carton should close without forcing the flaps against the console.
Seal the box with an H-tape pattern
Use pressure-sensitive plastic packing tape at least 2 inches wide. Apply at least three strips across both the top and bottom faces, and tape every flap seam. The resulting pattern resembles a capital H: one strip along each outer seam and one across the center seam, with additional strips if a seam is long or the carton is heavy.
Heavy-duty or reinforced tape is preferable for an Xbox-sized electronic shipment. Press the tape firmly onto clean, dry cardboard. Do not rely on household gift tape, masking tape, string or a single strip over the center seam.
Before the final strip, place a duplicate address label inside the carton. If the outside label is torn off, the internal copy gives the carrier a way to identify the destination. Put the carrier label on the top, flattest surface, away from a seam or corner.

Weigh, measure and declare the shipment correctly
Measure the sealed parcel
Measure the finished carton at its extreme outside points: overall length, width and height after taping. Include bulges, protruding tape folds and any part of the carton that extends beyond a panel. Weigh the sealed package, not the bare console.
Carriers use these values to create the shipment. UPS applies dimensional weight when a package is large relative to its actual weight, so an oversized carton can cost more even though a Series X or Series S is well below a 70-lb heavy-package threshold. UPS states that packages over 70 lb may incur an additional fee and packages over 150 lb move into freight handling; a normally packed Xbox is far below those thresholds, but the actual packed weight still controls the quote.
Enter the shipment details
- Record the measured length, width, height and weight.
- Enter the destination, service level and package type in the carrier’s current shipping calculator.
- Review dimensional-weight adjustments and any residential, fuel or handling charges shown at purchase.
- Declare the item’s value or buy coverage under the carrier’s current terms. Limits and exclusions can change, so read the terms displayed when you create the label.
- Keep the receipt, tracking number, photographs, serial number and a copy of the label.
Do not estimate the packed size from the console specification. A small error can change the dimensional-weight bracket or cause a carrier adjustment after acceptance.

Pack it yourself
DIY packing costs less when you already have anti-static cushioning, a suitable carton and strong tape. You control how the console is wrapped and can photograph every stage. The trade-off is responsibility: an unsuitable box, insufficient void fill or poor sealing can leave the device vulnerable, and carrier packing guarantees may not apply to a package you prepared yourself.

UPS directs customers to The UPS Store for supplies and packing help, and FedEx offers packaging services and specialty boxes. Local pricing, service guarantees and eligibility vary, so confirm the total cost and any coverage conditions before handing over the console.

Even when someone else packs it, photograph the console and serial number first, verify the accessory inventory and ask for the final packed dimensions and weight. Those details are needed to compare shipping quotes and to identify the parcel if a claim is required.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Buying a box that matches only the console
Symptom: The wrapped console nearly touches the walls or the flaps cannot close without pressure. Fix: Move to a larger carton or use a two-box arrangement. Recalculate after adding the controller, cables and required cushioning.
Using loose peanuts directly around electronics
Symptom: Peanuts contact vents and ports, or the console shifts as the fill settles. Fix: Use anti-static foam or bubble wrap as the primary cushion. If loose fill remains part of the plan, seal the console in a plastic bag and fill all voids while keeping a stable layer on every face.

Leaving accessories loose
Symptom: The controller or cable plugs rattle against the console. Fix: Bag and wrap each accessory, then secure it in a side space or inner box separated from the console by cushioning.
Protecting only the top and bottom
Symptom: Corners or side panels are exposed to the carton wall. Fix: Rewrap all six faces and add corner protection. The carrier’s 3–4-inch air-cellular recommendation applies around the computer or peripheral, not just above and below it.
Relying on one strip of tape
Symptom: Flaps lift or seams open when the carton is handled. Fix: Remove dusty or loose tape and reseal the top and bottom with at least three 2-inch-wide strips on each face, covering every seam.
Skipping the movement test
Symptom: You hear contents slide after the label is attached. Fix: Open the carton, add cushioning to the actual void, and retest. Do not assume the label or tape will prevent internal movement.
Using the bare-console weight for postage
Symptom: The carrier invoice is higher than the online estimate. Fix: Weigh the fully sealed parcel and enter its outside dimensions. Dimensional weight can apply when the carton is large relative to its actual weight.

- Declared value or optional coverage has been reviewed under the carrier’s current terms.
