A thick card print, mounted artwork or anything that could crease should travel flat between rigid boards in a cushioned mailer. The package is only half the job: international shipments also need an accurate customs declaration, a readable label, service-appropriate dimensions and coverage that you have checked for the exact origin, destination and carrier.
Choose rolled or flat packaging before you buy supplies
The poster’s construction determines the safest format. Do not roll simply because a tube is convenient, and do not force a flexible poster into a large flat box if that creates room for it to slide and bend.

Roll when the print can tolerate a curve
A normal poster printed on flexible paper is usually the tube candidate. Its surface should be clean and dry before packing. If the print has heavy ink, a delicate finish or a surface that scuffs easily, add a protective inner sleeve or clean paper layer; the available carrier guidance does not prescribe a particular sleeve material or archival specification, so choose one that will not abrade or transfer onto the print.

Keep thick or mounted work flat
Thicker card should not be rolled: curving it can create a hard crease that may not come out. Place the print between two firm boards cut slightly larger than the artwork. The boards must be rigid enough that an ordinary hand grip cannot bow the package. A “do not bend” marking can help a handler, but it is not a substitute for structural protection.

Why tube shape matters on an international route
Sorting systems are designed around packages that stay in predictable positions. Colissimo/La Poste warns that a round tube can roll off sorting equipment or be awkward for automated handling. A triangular or square tube presents stable faces and gives the label a flat area. If a round tube is your only option, add external stabilization so it cannot freely roll, and check that the shipping label and barcode lie flat and remain readable.
The tube must be wide enough for the complete address label and any customs documentation that the carrier requires on the outside. A tube that is long enough for the print but too narrow for a flat label creates a preventable scanning problem. Do not wrap the label around a curve or place it across a seam where it can lift.
How to pack a flexible poster in a tube
Use a sturdy tube with secure end closures. USPS packaging standards describe strong fiberboard tube construction and allow crimped or taped ends for lightweight rolled items such as posters or charts. Whatever the construction, the outside container must remain closed after repeated handling.

- Clean and inspect the print. Make sure the poster is completely dry, remove loose debris and photograph its condition for your records. Do not ship a print that is already curled at one edge without first flattening it as much as the material safely allows.
- Lay out protective paper. Put the poster on a sheet of clean craft paper larger than the print. DHL eCommerce UK’s packing sequence folds one edge of the paper over the poster, places another piece over it and then rolls the protected print. The paper should cover every printed surface and extend beyond the edges.
- Roll with the paper between the layers. Start from the edge recommended by the print’s construction and roll smoothly. Keep the roll loose enough that it does not form a hard crease, but narrow enough to enter the tube without forcing it. Do not make a tight spiral merely to reduce the tube diameter.
- Secure the paper without an elastic band. A tight elastic can leave a pressure mark or create a crease. DHL’s guidance uses masking tape to hold the protective paper in place. Apply tape to the paper wrapper rather than to the poster.
- Choose and prepare the tube. Select a rigid triangular or square tube when available. Confirm that the internal length exceeds the poster’s longest dimension and that the diameter or internal width accepts the loose roll without compression.
- Stop movement inside the tube. The print should not slide back and forth. Add suitable cushioning at the ends or use the tube’s fitted end pieces so the protected roll stays centered. Do not pack so tightly that pressure is transferred to the paper.
- Close both ends securely. Follow the tube manufacturer’s closure design; reinforce seams or caps with strong packing tape where appropriate. USPS guidance calls for a strong, securely sealed outer container and suitable cushioning.
- Apply the label to a flat face. Place the address label and barcode on the tube’s broadest flat panel. Leave all key text visible, and do not put tape over a barcode if glare or wrinkles could prevent scanning.
- Test the finished package. Gently move it in each direction. You should hear little or no sliding, and the ends should not open when you apply moderate hand pressure. If the roll shifts, reopen the package and add end cushioning rather than squeezing the poster tighter.
How to pack a poster that must remain flat
- Match the boards to the print. Use two rigid boards slightly larger than the poster on every side. Oversized boards add weight and may push the shipment into a different service category, so avoid unnecessary margins.
- Add a clean inner layer. A protective sleeve or paper wrap can reduce scuffing. Keep any adhesive on the wrapper, never on the artwork.
- Build a sandwich. Put the wrapped print between the boards and secure the contents so they cannot migrate. Corner protection and edge cushioning are useful where the mailer leaves a gap around the boards.
- Use a rigid outer mailer or box. The outer container must resist bending and compression. USPS standards require a strong, securely sealed container; a thin envelope with a single flimsy insert does not meet that objective.
- Fill voids without creating pressure points. Add cushioning around the board sandwich so it cannot shift, but do not place hard blocks directly against the printed face or corners.
- Seal every opening. Tape seams continuously enough that a conveyor belt, impact or moisture exposure cannot open the package. Check that no board edge can work through the closure.
- Mark and label the package. Put the address and barcode on the largest flat face. A “do not bend” notice is optional handling information, not the primary protection.
- Check for flex before dispatch. Hold the sealed package by one short edge. If the boards bow noticeably under their own weight, use stronger boards or a more rigid box.
Secure the outside for sorting, weather and repeated handling
International mail can pass through several postal systems and automated sorting stages. Use an outer container that tolerates rubbing and moderate impact, and ensure that corners are not exposed. Tape should adhere to clean, dry surfaces; loose paper fibers, dust and condensation reduce adhesion.

- Keep the label and barcode on a flat, unobstructed surface.
- Do not put critical address text over a tube seam, cap or fold.
- Remove or cover old barcodes and addresses so automated equipment cannot read the wrong destination.
- Make sure the return address remains visible in the format required by the chosen carrier.
- Weigh and measure the sealed package, not the empty tube or mailer.
Complete the international customs declaration accurately
Customs information is a legal description of what is crossing the border. For applicable USPS international shipments, the declaration requires a detailed contents description, quantity, weight and value; the current International Mail Manual also describes HS-code requirements. The sender remains responsible for checking the destination country’s import and export restrictions and any additional documents.
Describe the actual item
“Poster” may be too vague for a carrier’s customs system. Identify what the item is and what it is made of in plain language—for example, a printed paper wall poster or a mounted art print—then provide the requested quantity and accurate value. Use the description that matches the physical contents and the carrier’s available category.
Declare value honestly
Do not undervalue merchandise to reduce tax or postage, and do not call a sale or shipment merchandise a gift. An inaccurate declaration can cause a delay, assessment, return or seizure and can undermine a later insurance claim.
Check destination restrictions before payment
Rules vary by destination and service. Verify whether printed matter, framed or mounted work, paper products, adhesives or wooden packaging require special treatment. Confirm whether the destination requires an import permit, tax identifier or other document, and save a copy of the completed declaration.

Compare carrier limits using the exact service
There is no universal international poster size, price or insurance rule. A carrier may publish separate limits for letters, large documents, parcels and tubes, and the same carrier can apply different rules by origin, destination and service.

Measure length, width and thickness at the package’s largest points. A triangular tube can be measured differently from a rectangular parcel under a carrier’s dimensional rules, so use that carrier’s definition rather than assuming a postal formula.
Tracking, insurance and claims
Choose a service that provides tracking if you need proof of acceptance and delivery. Check where tracking events are available: some services show detailed scans only in the origin country or after handoff to the destination operator.

Keep the receipt, tracking number, customs copy, photographs of the poster before packing, photographs of the completed package and proof of value. Packaging-related damage may be excluded or challenged if the service requires a particular container, so retain the tube or mailer until a claim is resolved.

The poster arrives with a hard crease
The roll was probably tightened too far, the print was not suitable for rolling, or an elastic band created a pressure point. Repack flexible paper with a looser roll and paper protection; send thick card flat between rigid boards.
The tube arrives crushed or split
The outer container was not rigid enough, the ends were weak, or the package was compressed against heavier parcels. Replace a thin tube with a sturdy construction, reinforce the closures and add end cushioning. A triangular or square profile can also reduce uncontrolled rolling on conveyors.
The print slides inside the tube
Movement allows repeated impacts at the ends. Add cushioning that holds the protected roll in place without squeezing it. Recheck by gently shaking the closed package before labeling.

The barcode will not scan
A round tube may not provide a flat label area, or the label may be wrinkled, wrapped around a curve or covered by reflective tape. Move it to the broadest flat face, remove old labels and keep the barcode unobstructed.
Customs asks for more information
The description, value, quantity, weight or HS-code data may be incomplete or inconsistent. Respond with the accurate details from your saved packing record. Do not invent a lower value or a different contents description to speed release.
The shipment is rejected for size or service
Recheck the measurements of the sealed package and the carrier’s rules for that exact route. A flat-document limit may not apply to a parcel or tube, and a package that exceeds one dimension can be ineligible even when its total volume seems small.
Examples of sensible packaging decisions
Standard flexible paper poster
Use a clean craft-paper wrap, a loose roll, masking tape on the wrapper, a rigid triangular tube, end cushioning and a label on a flat face. Declare the item as printed paper artwork or the carrier’s closest accurate category, with its real value.
Heavy card stock or mounted print
Keep it flat between rigid boards in a cushioned mailer or box. Measure the completed package carefully because board thickness can move it outside a large-document service and into parcel rules.
Round tube already purchased
Stabilize it against rolling, ensure the label lies flat and readable, and stop the poster from sliding. If the tube cannot hold a flat label securely or its closures are weak, repack in a different container before dispatch.
Final pre-dispatch checklist
- The poster’s material and thickness support the selected rolled or flat format.
- The print is protected from scuffing by clean paper or an appropriate sleeve.
- A rolled print has a loose roll, no tight elastic and secure end cushioning.
- A flat print has rigid boards on both sides and cannot flex or shift inside the mailer.
- The outer container is strong, sealed and free of old labels and barcodes.
- The label and barcode are flat, legible and placed where the carrier directs.
- The package has been weighed and measured after sealing.
- The carrier accepts that format and size for the exact origin and destination.
- The customs description, quantity, weight, value and any HS-code information are accurate.
- Destination restrictions and required documents have been checked.
- Tracking, coverage, exclusions and claim requirements are understood for the chosen service.
- Photos, receipts and customs records have been saved.
Packaging cannot eliminate every risk in international transport, but matching the format to the print, preventing movement, presenting a stable package to sorting equipment and completing the customs and service checks removes the most avoidable causes of creases, bends, scuffs and delays.
