Identify the category first, isolate the tool from its power source, and use only the sharpening procedure its manufacturer provides. For many oscillating blades, the supported maintenance decision is inspection and replacement rather than resharpening.
Identify the blade before touching a file or sharpener
Blade geometry, mounting hardware and intended material determine whether sharpening is safe. Advice for a pocket knife does not transfer to a toothed oscillating accessory, and the file-and-stone procedure for an outdoor line-cutting blade is not a general oscillating-blade recipe.

| Blade category | Typical job | Maintenance direction supported by the cited maker guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Oscillating multi-tool blade | Plunge or flush cuts in materials such as wood, screws, nails, cement board and plaster | Inspect before use; do not use dull, damaged or excessively worn accessories; replace when the maker’s criteria are met. The cited guidance does not establish a general resharpening method. |
| Outdoor line-cutting blade | Rotating vegetation-cutting attachment | The cited EGO instructions describe removing the blade, clamping it, and restoring the original cutting-edge angle with a fine-tooth file or sharpening stone. |
| Pocket multitool plain edge | General knife cutting | Leatherman says straight-edged sections can be sharpened with standard equipment such as whetstones, rods and sharpening kits. |
| Pocket multitool serrated edge | Cutting that uses scalloped teeth | Use a system designed for serrations and work only on the edged side so the serration curvature is retained. |
How to tell them apart
- An oscillating accessory is a flat, interchangeable blade that locks into a power-tool mount. Its tooth pattern and mounting interface are part of the accessory design.
- An outdoor line-cutting blade is attached to a guard or cutting head on a shaft. EGO’s cited instructions refer specifically to a blade removed from its guard.
- A pocket multitool blade folds into a handle and may have either a continuous straight edge or a scalloped serrated edge.
Make the tool safe before inspection or sharpening
Power isolation is the first maintenance step, not an optional precaution. A blade can move unexpectedly while you are holding it, and a switch being off does not prove that the accessory is de-energized.
- Stop the tool and remove its energy source. Remove the battery from a cordless outdoor attachment, as EGO directs for its line-cutting blade. For a corded or cordless power tool, follow the Triton XT 18MTB manual’s direction to disconnect power before changing an accessory or performing maintenance.
- Wait for all movement to stop. Put the tool on a stable surface and allow a recently used blade or head to cool before handling it.
- Remove the accessory according to the tool manual. Do not improvise with the retaining screw, washer, guard or mount. Keep small hardware together so the blade can be reinstalled in its original orientation.
- Wear eye protection and suitable gloves. EGO explicitly calls for eye protection and gloves during its line-cutting-blade procedure. Gloves do not make a moving blade safe; they are for handling a disconnected, stationary part.
- Clean enough to inspect. Brush or wipe away debris using the method allowed by the maker. Do not flood a powered tool or introduce solvent before checking its manual.
- Check the accessory and its mount. Look for cracks, bent sections, missing teeth, severe rounding, corrosion that affects strength, loose hardware and damage around the mounting hole or interface.
If you cannot positively identify the blade, its mount or the manufacturer’s maintenance instructions, stop at inspection and replacement. Do not infer a sharpening angle from a similar-looking blade.

Decide whether sharpening is appropriate
Sharpen only where the manufacturer gives a method
The safest dividing line is simple: sharpen only a blade type for which the maker provides a procedure. EGO’s file-and-stone directions apply to its specified line-cutting blade. Leatherman’s guidance distinguishes plain and serrated pocket-multitool edges. The Triton material tells users to use sharp accessories and reject dull or excessively worn ones, but the cited passage does not provide a resharpening process for oscillating blades.
Replace instead of sharpening when the blade is unsafe
- Replace a blade that is cracked, bent, badly chipped or otherwise damaged.
- Replace an accessory that is excessively worn or no longer cuts reliably after the maker’s service limit is reached.
- Replace a blade or outdoor cutting attachment that becomes loose after it has been correctly fixed in position. EGO says a badly worn or loose blade on the relevant head should be replaced immediately.
- Replace hardware or an accessory when the mounting interface no longer holds it securely.
A dull edge alone does not authorize a universal sharpening technique. If the maker provides no resharpening instructions for that model and geometry, replacement is the defensible maintenance action.
How to sharpen the cited EGO line-cutting blade
This procedure is specific to EGO’s line-cutting blade instructions. It is not a recipe for oscillating saw blades or for every outdoor blade.

- Take the blade off the guard. Follow the attachment’s retaining-hardware sequence and keep the two screws and other hardware together.
- Secure the blade in a vise. Clamp it firmly enough that it cannot move, but avoid crushing or distorting the blade.
- Put on eye protection and gloves. Keep your hands clear of the cutting edge while positioning the blade.
- Use a fine-tooth file or sharpening stone. EGO specifies either of these tools for the cutting edges.
- Maintain the original cutting-edge angle. Remove only enough material to restore the existing bevel. Do not create a new angle based on a generic knife-sharpening chart.
- Work carefully and evenly. Keep the edge geometry consistent rather than aggressively thinning one section. Stop if you uncover a crack, deep chip or deformation; a damaged blade needs replacement.
- Reinstall the blade on the guard. Return it to its original orientation and secure it with the two screws.
- Check security before use. Verify that the blade and guard are fixed in position and that nothing binds or wobbles.
The goal is to restore the maker’s original edge, not to make the blade razor-like. If the edge cannot be restored without removing substantial material, or if the blade is loose or badly worn, replace it.
How to sharpen pocket multitool blades
Plain-edged sections
Leatherman says a straight-edged blade section can be sharpened with standard equipment such as a whetstone, rod or sharpening kit. The tool should be held securely, and the sharpening angle should follow the existing bevel rather than being guessed from an unrelated knife. Remove light, even amounts of metal and inspect the edge frequently. If the blade has structural damage, a bent tip or a loose pivot, sharpening does not correct the underlying problem; service or replacement is the appropriate next step.
Serrated sections
Serrations have individual curved valleys and teeth. A flat stone used across the entire face can erase that geometry. Leatherman states:

Use a serration-compatible system sized for the scallops, and work only on the edged side. Leatherman warns that working on the flat side wears away the serrations. Follow the sharpener’s instructions for matching its profile to each serration; do not force a straight bevel into a curved tooth.
After sharpening a folding blade
- Remove all abrasive filings from the edge and pivot area.
- Open and close the blade slowly, checking that the lock or retention system engages as designed.
- Confirm that the edge is even and that no burr remains large enough to interfere with safe closing.
- Do not test sharpness on a finger. Use a controlled piece of appropriate material and keep the blade pointed away from yourself.
Why oscillating blades are usually a replacement decision
Oscillating blades vary by tooth form, carbide application, thickness, mount and target material. The cited Triton manual requires sharp blades and says not to use dull or excessively worn accessories, but it does not give a resharpening angle or process. That absence matters: a file or grinder can alter tooth clearance, overheat the steel or weaken the mounting area.

For an oscillating accessory, use this sequence:
- Disconnect power or remove the battery.
- Remove the blade and clean it only by the maker-approved method.
- Inspect teeth, the cutting edge, the mounting interface and any signs of cracking or distortion.
- Check the tool manual or blade maker’s instructions for a model-specific sharpening procedure.
- If no such procedure exists, install a compatible replacement rather than experimenting on the old blade.
Do not transfer the EGO file angle or a pocket-knife sharpening angle to an oscillating blade. Those instructions address different products.

EGO Rotocut attachment
For the cited EGO Rotocut guidance, remove the battery and detach the head from the shaft before cleaning. Use a damp cloth with mild detergent, then wipe away excess moisture with a soft dry cloth. Avoid solvents and detergents containing aromatic oils on plastic parts. After cleaning, inspect the blade and fasteners; EGO says a blade that is badly worn or becomes loose after the head is fixed in position should be replaced immediately.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minutePocket multitools
Leatherman recommends cleaning and drying the tool and periodically relubricating it to inhibit corrosion. Salt water and marine exposure require extra attention: rinse the tool with fresh water, dry it thoroughly and apply a light oil. Acetone and brake cleaners may damage plastic components, so do not use them as general-purpose degreasers on a pocket multitool.

Oscillating power tools and accessories
Cleaning directions differ by tool and accessory. Keep moisture away from the motor, switch and battery contacts, and use only the method specified in the manual. A blade that is clean but dull, cracked or excessively worn is still unsafe. Cleaning cannot restore lost tooth geometry or repair a damaged mount.
Choose a replacement that actually fits
Replacement selection involves more than matching the word “multi-tool.” Confirm the tool’s mounting interface, the blade’s intended materials and the condition that caused the old blade to be removed.
Concrete example: Milwaukee OPEN-LOK 49-25-1521
Milwaukee lists its OPEN-LOK 1-3/8-inch carbide-tooth universal-fit oscillating multi-tool blade, model 49-25-1521, for work including wood, screws, nails, cement board and plaster. The product information explicitly says it is not compatible with Starlock tools. A “universal-fit” description therefore does not mean universal compatibility with every oscillating mount.
Milwaukee also claims that its carbide-teeth blades last “up to 50X longer than standard bi-metal blades.” That is a manufacturer performance claim; the cited product page does not state a publication year for it, and it is not an independently established test result. Treat the figure as product marketing rather than a guaranteed service life.
Compatibility checklist
- Read the tool manual for the accepted mounting interface.
- Compare the replacement’s mount and retaining method with the old accessory.
- Confirm that the blade is rated for the workpiece materials you will cut.
- Check dimensions, such as the 1-3/8-inch width listed for the example blade, against the clearance and task.
- Do not force a blade onto a mount because its teeth appear suitable.
- After installation, verify that the accessory is fully seated and cannot wobble before energizing the tool.
Post-maintenance checks and storage
Before the first cut
- Confirm that every retaining screw, washer, guard and lock is present and tight according to the tool manual.
- Make sure the blade is installed in the intended orientation and has no contact with the guard or housing while stationary.
- Clear files, stones, rags and loose hardware from the work area.
- Restore the battery or power connection only after the tool is fully assembled.
- Run the tool briefly in a safe position, without directing the blade toward people, and stop immediately if there is unusual vibration, noise or movement.
- Disconnect power again before correcting any problem.
Storage
Store removed blades so their edges cannot contact one another or be reached accidentally. Keep pocket multitools dry, especially after salt-water exposure. Store replacement accessories in their packaging or another dry holder that identifies the mount and intended material. Do not leave a powered tool connected while an accessory is awaiting maintenance.
Troubleshooting common maintenance problems
| Symptom | Likely maintenance issue | Action |
|---|---|---|
| The blade still cuts poorly after filing | The blade may be excessively worn, damaged or sharpened at the wrong geometry. | Stop using it. Check the maker’s service criteria and replace it if the original edge cannot be restored. |
| An outdoor cutting blade wobbles after installation | The blade, guard or retaining hardware may be worn, loose or incorrectly assembled. | Remove the battery, disassemble and inspect. EGO’s guidance calls for immediate replacement when a badly worn blade becomes loose after the head is fixed. |
| An oscillating replacement will not seat | The mounting interface may be incompatible. | Compare the tool mount with the accessory specification. A universal-fit description does not include Starlock tools when the product expressly excludes them. |
| A serrated pocket blade has flattened teeth | A flat sharpening method may have removed the serration curvature. | Use a serration-specific system on the edged side only. If the geometry is badly altered, seek maker service or replace the tool. |
| Plastic parts become cloudy or sticky after cleaning | An unsuitable solvent may have attacked the plastic. | Stop using that cleaner. Leatherman specifically warns that acetone and brake cleaners may damage plastic components. |
| Vibration appears after a blade change | The accessory may be loose, incorrectly seated, damaged or unsuitable for the mount. | Disconnect power immediately and inspect the interface. Do not continue cutting until the cause is corrected. |
A practical maintenance decision tree
- What kind of blade is it? Classify it as oscillating, outdoor line-cutting or pocket multitool.
- Is the tool isolated? Remove the battery or disconnect power before touching the accessory.
- Is there damage, looseness or excessive wear? If yes, replace or service it rather than sharpening.
- Does the manufacturer publish a method for this exact blade type? If no, do not invent an angle or abrasive technique.
- If sharpening is authorized, can you preserve the original geometry? Use the specified tool and stop when damage becomes apparent.
- After maintenance, is the accessory correctly mounted and secure? If not, do not energize the tool.
For the three categories covered here, the defensible rule is narrow but useful: follow the EGO procedure only for the specified line-cutting blade, use profile-preserving equipment for pocket-tool serrations, and treat oscillating-blade dullness as a replacement question unless that blade’s maker supplies explicit resharpening instructions.
