The safe way to sharpen a multi-tool knife is to identify its edge first, secure the compact tool without putting fingers in the edge path, and use an abrasive that preserves the blade’s geometry. Plain edges can usually be maintained with a stone, rod, or guided sharpener. Serrated edges require a narrow rod or serration-specific system used in each groove from the edged side; rubbing a flat abrasive over the back can destroy the teeth.
There is no universal multi-tool sharpening angle. Leatherman specifies a 32° included angle (16° per side) for its plain-edge sections and 20° on one side for its serrated sections, but those figures are manufacturer-specific. Check your exact model’s manual before adopting any angle, especially when the blade is from another maker or uses a different steel.

- Fully serrated edge: a repeating series of teeth and curved scallops. Each scallop must be sharpened with a narrow round or tapered abrasive that fits its radius.
- Combination edge: a plain section and a serrated section on the same blade. Treat each section as a separate job and change tools at the transition.
Do not infer the correct angle from a different multi-tool, a kitchen knife, or a previous sharpening session. Look for the product manual or the maker’s maintenance instructions. The steel, factory bevel, and intended use can all change the appropriate setting.

What equipment works for each edge
| Blade section | Suitable equipment | How to use it | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plain | Whetstone, diamond plate, ceramic or diamond rod, or guided sharpener | Hold the factory bevel consistently and use light, controlled passes. | Rounding the bevel by changing angles between strokes. |
| Serrated | Narrow round rod, tapered diamond rod, or a system designed for serrations | Fit the abrasive into one scallop at a time and work from the edged side. | Flattening the teeth or removing too much metal from the grooves. |
| Combination | One plain-edge tool plus one serration tool | Sharpen the two sections independently and preserve the boundary between them. | Using a flat stone on the serrated section. |
Leatherman describes a blade sharpener that combines carbide and ceramic elements with a diamond-coated rod for serrations. Its United States product page was shown as unavailable when checked, so verify current stock and compatibility rather than assuming the accessory can be purchased. A standard stone or rod remains a practical option for an accessible plain edge when it can be set to the model’s specified bevel.
Set up a safe work area
A multi-tool blade is short, close to the handle, and awkward to hold. The handle can pivot or contain other implements that interfere with your grip. Set up before applying any abrasive:
- Work on a stable, well-lit surface where the tool cannot slide. Keep loose clothing, cords, and other people away from the sharpening path.
- Read both the multi-tool’s safety instructions and the sharpener’s instructions. A clamp or guide designed for a fixed knife may not accept a folding multi-tool.
- Choose the safest permitted blade position. Work Sharp’s guide notes that keeping a folding knife closed while clamping may be safest when the blade and handle design allow it; this is not a universal procedure. Follow the guide supplied with your particular system.
- If the blade must be open, secure the handle by the prescribed method and keep every finger outside the arc of the edge and the abrasive. Do not improvise a grip that places a thumb behind the cutting edge.
- Keep the edge pointed away from your body and anyone nearby. Gerber’s care guidance states: “Always cut away from your body, or from the body of any other person around which the knife is being applied.” Use the same direction for sharpening strokes.
- Have a cloth, brush, and suitable light ready for removing metal filings. Do not wipe across the edge with a bare fingertip.
How to sharpen a plain-edge multi-tool blade
1. Inspect and clean the bevel
Remove oil, dirt, and adhesive from the blade so you can see the existing bevel. Check for chips, a rolled edge, or deep damage. Light dullness can be corrected with normal sharpening; a large chip may require professional grinding because removing enough metal by hand can alter the blade profile.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2. Set the maker’s angle
Use the exact angle stated for your model. For example, Leatherman’s maintenance guidance specifies 32° included, or 16° per side, for its plain-edge blade sections. That is a Leatherman specification, not a default for every multi-tool. If your manual gives only an included angle, divide it equally between the two sides unless the maker instructs otherwise.
Some guided systems present a single-side setting. Work Sharp’s Precision Adjust guide describes 15°–22.5° per side as a lower-angle range that favors sharpness but gives up some durability, and 23°–30° per side as a higher-angle range that favors durability with functional sharpness. Those are that system’s general recommendations, not validated settings for every multi-tool. The factory bevel and the tool maker’s instructions take priority.

3. Make light, even passes
Place the bevel on the stone or set the guide as directed. Move the blade or abrasive in a controlled direction away from your body, maintaining contact from the heel toward the tip. On a short multi-tool blade, use fewer, deliberate passes rather than forcing the edge through the abrasive. Match the number of passes on each side unless the maker specifies a different method.
Start with the least aggressive abrasive that can restore the edge. Coarse diamond or carbide removes metal quickly but can shorten blade life if used after the edge is already aligned. Progress to a finer stone or ceramic surface when the bevel is established.

4. Check for a burr, then refine
A consistent burr is a thin wire of displaced metal that can be felt only with great care; never test it by sliding a finger along the edge. Inspect under bright light or lightly catch the edge with a clean piece of paper. Once a burr has formed along the opposite side, repeat the process on that side until the burr moves back, then use alternating very light strokes to remove it. If the burr will not form consistently, your angle or pressure is probably changing.
5. Stop as soon as the edge is restored
Test on an appropriate material such as clean paper or a piece of cardboard, keeping the blade pointed away from you. A restored edge should begin a cut without excessive force or snagging. Do not keep grinding merely to produce a mirror finish. Gerber recommends frequent, light sharpening and warns that over-sharpening can cause premature blade deterioration.
How to sharpen a serrated multi-tool blade
Why the back must stay flat
Serrations have an edged side with bevels and a comparatively flat back. Leatherman’s guidance warns: “Sharpening the flat (back) side of the blade will cause the serrations to wear away, reducing the blade’s effectiveness.” The warning applies specifically to its serrated sections, but the underlying geometry is common: a flat abrasive across the back can erase the teeth instead of restoring them.

1. Select a rod that fits the scallop
Choose a narrow round or tapered diamond or ceramic rod, or a sharpener explicitly designed for serrations. The rod should contact the curved portion without bridging across the tooth. A rod that is too large will sharpen only the outer shoulders; one that is too small can create an uneven groove.
2. Work one groove at a time
- Position the rod in the first scallop on the edged side, following the existing angle. Leatherman lists 20° on one side for its serrated sections; confirm the angle for your own model.
- Use short, light strokes along the groove. Keep the rod aligned with the scallop rather than rocking it from side to side.
- Move to the next scallop and repeat. Count passes so one groove does not receive substantially more abrasion than its neighbors.
- Inspect the flat back for a slight burr or wire. Gerber’s care guidance describes removing that burr from the flat side after the grooves are sharpened, using only the lightest contact needed. If your manufacturer specifies another finishing method, follow that method instead.
Do not run a flat stone along the entire serrated back, and do not try to make the serrations look like a plain edge. Their teeth are supposed to remain distinct.
Handling a combination-edge blade
Mark the point where the plain section changes to serrations before you begin. Sharpen the plain portion with its specified angle and the serrated portion with a properly sized rod. Shield the serrations when working on the plain bevel so a flat abrasive does not catch the teeth. Likewise, keep the rod inside each scallop when working near the transition; a single slip can widen the first serration or create a notch in the plain bevel.
Choosing between a freehand stone and a guided system
Stone or rod
Freehand equipment is compact, inexpensive, and adaptable to unusual multi-tool shapes. It also demands consistent hand control. A short blade gives you little room to correct an angle, and the handle may prevent a full-length stroke. Use a stone or rod when you can support the tool securely and see the complete bevel.
Guided sharpener
A clamp and angle guide can make a plain edge more repeatable, especially for someone who has trouble holding a constant bevel. Confirm that the clamp can safely hold a folding multi-tool and that the blade can be positioned without exposing your fingers to the edge. Follow the system’s stated clamping sequence; there is no single safe procedure for every handle design.

Carbide pull-through sharpeners
A carbide slot can restore a very dull plain edge quickly, but it removes a relatively large amount of metal and may impose an angle that does not match the factory bevel. Use one only when the tool maker permits it and the slot geometry is compatible. It is generally unsuitable for serrations unless the maker specifically designed the slot for them.

The blade is sharper in some places than others
This usually indicates an inconsistent angle, uneven pressure, or a stone that is not level. Clean the abrasive, mark the bevel with a temporary marker, and make a few light passes. The marker should disappear evenly across the bevel; if it remains at the shoulder or edge, adjust the angle before continuing.
The tip has become rounded
Allowing the tip to roll off the stone at the end of each stroke can remove the point. Shorten the stroke near the tip and lift the abrasive or blade according to the sharpener’s instructions. Restore the tip gradually rather than pressing harder.
A wire edge keeps returning
A persistent wire edge means the burr has not been fully removed or the final strokes are too forceful. Alternate very light passes on both sides with a fine abrasive, then stop. Excessive stropping or pressure can fold the wire edge back over instead of removing it.

The tool moves in the clamp
Stop immediately. Reposition only as the guide directs, check that the jaws are clean, and verify that the tool is within the clamp’s size and shape limits. Never compensate for movement by gripping closer to the edge.
Cleaning and storing the tool after sharpening
Brush or wipe away filings, then clean and dry the blade according to the maker’s care instructions. Remove abrasive dust from the pivot and other implements without forcing grit deeper into the mechanism. Apply only the lubricant recommended for the tool and keep it off surfaces where it could contaminate food. Close and store the multi-tool so the edge cannot contact other metal, and inspect the blade before the next use.
When manufacturer service is the better choice
Use a service center when the blade has a major chip, bent tip, damaged lock, badly worn serrations, or steel that requires equipment you do not have. Leatherman currently describes a free sharpening service for its MagnaCut tools and knives, limited to non-serrated blade portions. Eligibility depends on the model, steel, edge type, and location. Its United States process requires a service form and secure packaging; customers outside the United States are directed to contact a local distributor. Confirm the current submission, shipping, and geographic terms before mailing a tool.

Service is also sensible when preserving warranty coverage matters or when the blade is difficult to hold safely. Do not ship a dirty, loaded, or unlocked tool; follow the service provider’s packaging instructions exactly.
Quick Recap
A practical decision checklist
- Have you identified the exact make, model, steel, and whether the edge is plain, serrated, or combination?
- Did you confirm the sharpening angle from that model’s instructions rather than borrowing a number from another knife?
- Is the sharpener sized for the blade and, for serrations, for each scallop’s radius?
- Can the tool be held or clamped without placing fingers in the edge path?
- Are every stroke and cutting motion directed away from your body and other people?
- Are you using light passes and stopping when the edge cuts cleanly instead of removing unnecessary metal?
- Have you cleaned, dried, and safely stored the tool after sharpening?
